Seven years on from its 2014 release, it’s been announced that Titanfall is coming to an end. Respawn has just announced that the game will be delisted and removed from subscription services next year.

After March 1, 2022, only those who have already purchased Titanfall, or pick up a second-hand key or physical copy, will be able to play the game. Further still, sales are already ceasing today. Servers will remain online for now, but it’s clear that Respawn is shifting its focus towards its more recent and popular titles.

“Titanfall is part of our DNA at Respawn. It’s a game that showcased the ambitions of the studio when it was first released more than 7 years ago and it continues to be a beacon of innovation that we strive for in all of our games”, reads Respawn’s statement. “Rest assured, Titanfall is core to Respawn’s DNA and this incredible universe will continue.”

Sales of the original Titanfall will stop today. From March, it will be removed from streaming services, presumably due to contracts the company has with third parties.

The response to this seems to be understanding so far. While the relationship between Titanfall fans and Respawn hasn’t always been amicable, it appears that many see this as a positive – the devs can now allocate more resources towards fixing Titanfall 2, or even developing Titanfall 3. Some, however, seem to be taking it as an indication that Respawn is shifting away from the series as a whole in favour of Apex Legends, considering its monstrous success.

Whether this is the beginning of Respawn fixing the game’s sequel remains to be seen. It’s been in a rough shape for some time, plagued by hackers who ruin the game for everyone, either by cheating or spreading bigotry. Earlier this year, we reported that Respawn allegedly had just two developers working on the game, potentially explaining why this has been such a persistent issue.
