Pokémon: The Movie 2000 is the second Pokémon movie that features Pokémon Lugia, Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno. When the villain captures two of the legendary birds in an attempt to lure out Lugia, he throws off the world’s balance. The legendary birds then become so enraged that they start fighting amongst themselves in a battle violent enough to destroy the world.
Although Lugia’s responsibility is to stop the fighting, an ancient prophecy states that only Ash Ketchum can help bring back peace to the world. Like most movies based on a prophecy of vague origins, the movie has quite a few things that are confusing about it.
10 The Title Was Changed With The U.S. Release
The U.S. release of the movie was titled Pokémon: The Movie 2000. Although the dubbed version was made available in the middle of that year, the movie’s actual release date was an entire year earlier. The bottom of the original VHS cover stated that just one person could make a difference. However, the movie’s original title, which is available in the opening sequence, is Pokémon: The Power Of One. It would have made more sense to keep the title the same.
9 Zapdos Communicates Through Electrocution
After Moltres is captured, Zapdos decides to claim Moltres’ island as its own. Unlike some other legendary Pokémon who can speak telepathically to humans or even through the ordinary Pokémon language, Zapdos and Pikachu communicate to each other by zapping each other electrical blasts.
The communication actually ends up hurting Pikachu, and Zapdos barely notices Pikachu’s presence. It’s never explained why Zapdos communicates this way.
8 The Prophecy Calls Ash The Chosen One
As told by Slowking, the prophecy states that if the birds were ever disturbed, the world would turn to Ash. Specifically, Ash Ketchum. At this moment, Ash complains about the fact that his mother didn’t just name him Bob. The movie never really states what makes Ash so special. Other than that, the orb from each island only glows in his hands. The prophecy doesn’t say anything about what the people should do if this happens again years in the future when Ash Ketchum is long gone.
7 Ash Never Notices Team Rocket Following Them
When traveling on the sea in a small boat, Ash and his friends never notice that Team Rocket follows them the whole time. Team Rocket isn’t exactly well hidden, especially when the storm hits. The ocean carries a large group of Magikarp to the surface, including Team Rocket’s Magikarp submarine. The submarine is gigantic compared to the rest of the Magikarp, but no one on Ash’s boat ever thinks about looking back even once.
6 The Legendary Birds Affect The Weather And Balance Of The World
It isn’t easy to imagine how capturing a single firebird is enough to make snow and rain sporadically appear in areas worldwide. Legendary Pokémon are rare and powerful, but the movie doesn’t explain why birds of ice, thunder, and fire can control the weather across an entire planet.
It seems like a bit of a stretch, especially since games featuring these Pokémon allow trainers to catch them without consequences.
5 The Villain Leaves Strangers Unattended On His Ship
Lawrence III commands a giant airship with artificial intelligence and the ability to defeat and capture the legendary Pokémon effortlessly. Although he wields an immense amount of power, he makes a careless mistake when he accidentally captures Ash’s group. After they tell him that they are disgusted with his plans, he releases them and leaves them alone with the legendary Pokémon. This mistake causes Ash to release the legendary birds, who destroy his ship.
4 No Other Legendary Pokémon Bother To Show Up
At this point, there was a minimal number of legendary Pokémon. However, despite the danger of drawing thousands of Pokémon to the battle scene, no legendary Pokémon show up besides Lugia. Ho’Oh, Mewtwo, Mew, the legendary dog Pokémon do not bother to make an appearance even though there was a chance that the battle between the bird Pokémon would have been catastrophic enough to destroy the entire world.
3 People Just Stroll Out Of A Helicopter Crash
Professor Oak, Professor Ivy, and Ash’s mother travel from Pallet town to be there for him. However, the helicopter makes a rough crash landing. Despite the crash’s impact, they immediately open the door and hop out, as spry as ever. Although they were there to support Ash, the first thing that Delia Ketchum does when she sees her son is yell at him for being reckless. However, he hardly had much choice and the fact that she named him Ash made this situation partially her fault.
2 The Legendary Birds Attack Ash
Feeling terrible for the caged Zapdos and Moltres, Ash sends out his Pokémon to attack their cages. With the combined efforts of his Pokémon, he manages to free them. As thanks, the birds decide to destroy the airship that he is standing on, causing it to crash. When Ash gathers the orbs and tries to break up the ensuing battle between the three legendary birds, they do not hesitate to attack him as well.
1 Everyone Forgets About The Villain
At the end of the movie, balance is restored, and Lugia soars through the air peacefully with Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos. A whirlpool of water stretches across the sky in gorgeous imagery, but the characters forget one important thing: the villain hasn’t be apprehended. Rather than learning his lesson, he holds a Mew card and decides that he is more than willing to start his legendary collection again from scratch.
