The Operator in VALORANT is meant to be deadly. VALORANT is Riot’s second major game and has taken the sports world by storm. As with all games, players have issues with some of the guns for being underpowered or overpowered. In this case, it’s the Operator getting flack for its one-shot kills.

Is the Operator Over-Powered?

The Operator is the most expensive weapon in the game, costing 4,500 credits. As far as stats are concerned, at 50m, it does 150 damage to the body, 255 damage to the head, and 127 damage to the legs. It also has a 2.5x or 5x zoom and a fire rate of 0.75 rounds per second. The detractors say it gives an unfair advantage to the player using it, especially if they are in the defending team. All the sniper has to do is cover the entrances, and any attackers trying to get in won’t have a chance. Attackers using the wall for cover can even get taken out with a well-aimed shot.

Despite the insane damage figures, the Operator also has disadvantages to help balance it out. It’s very slow to reload and has a small tiny ammo capacity of five. The Operator is also challenging to use in close-quarters, especially if you have multiple enemies with rapid-fire weapons coming after you. The high price is also a deterrent and ensures that it gets limited use.

Operator Vs. AWP

The most obvious comparison to the Operator is the AWB from CS: GO. They are both the most expensive guns in their respective games and are both powerful bolt-action sniper rifles. More importantly, they are both one-shot, one-kill weapons. So while the AWP is a legendary gun that brings balance and skill to the game, why is the Operator vilified for having the same characteristics? One of the arguments is that all the players in CS:GO have access to flashes and smoke grenades to mitigate the effect of the AWP. This may be true, but opposing agents have all kinds of powers, including smokescreens, flashes, and even orbital strikes to take down Operator users.

Blame the Player Or The Game?

The lead character designer, Ryan Morello, recently addressed the Operator’s problems on a Q&A on Twitch. According to him, “We don’t think the Operator is overpowered. “We think some portions of utility might be underperforming in mid-Elos, but not elite Elos or expert Elos. We don’t think there’s a balance problem.” He goes on to say,” “You walk around the corner, and an OP is standing on the corner, it shoots you, and you die? That’s by design, we will not be fixing that.”

What he’s saying is that high-level players with great communication aren’t having any problem with the OP. It’s the lower-level players having the issue, and it’s down to poor team communication and team selection.

His comments make total sense when you consider the vast difference in player skills around the world. Many people play VALORANT casually with randoms. They often don’t have microphones and aren’t communicating in real-time. Sometimes they don’t have any tactics, with each player doing their own thing. Teams like this are easy pickings for well-coordinated, tactically-minded teams, especially with the Operator.

Skilled teams start off with a balanced selection of agents that each specialize in a specific area. Their objective is to work as a unit to take down the enemy using their weapons, and combining the abilities at their disposal. If this is done correctly, there are countless ways to stop the Operator from doing so much damage. After all, this is a game where remote airstrikes, flashes, surveillance drones, and more are part of the agents’ abilities.

VALORANT is designed to be difficult, and players require skill and teamwork to succeed. The game is unforgiving on players who can’t think tactically and gel with others as a team. Just like how CS:GO players have managed to deal with the AWP for years, VALORANT players need to up their game and find new tactics.
