It’s been nearly two years since Pokémon Sword & Shield came out, but the games still feel as relevant as they were in late 2019. The expansion passes, Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, also help fans stay interested in the Galar region. There’s probably a third and possibly final DLC in store for the games, but that’s still a while away.

However, players keep discovering new things in the games. Sword & Shield aren’t the richest of Pokémon games, narratively speaking, but they still offer plenty of side quests, secrets, and easter eggs to keep fans of the franchise satisfied and entertained. And some are so well hidden that even experienced players can easily miss them.

10 The Gym Leaders’ Nicknames

One of Sword & Shield’s biggest successes is the unique and defined identities of their Gym Leaders. Previously, these characters existed for only the brief moments when the player challenged them to a battle. Sword & Shield took the time to develop them and give them distinctive personalities.

One of the many details that they have in these games is their secret nicknames. Each Gym Leader has a number in their uniform, which also has a double meaning in Japanese. For example, Milo, Sword & Shield’s first Gym Leader, has the number 13, which in Japanese is a pun for vegetables. A fitting word for this Grass-type specialist.

9 The Turffield Riddle

Milo’s hometown of Turffield also has some secrets of its own. It is the first major city that players visit in Sword & Shield and can seem rather unimpressive at first sight. However, Turffield hides one of the most convenient items in the franchise, the Expert Belt.

To acquire it, the player must solve a riddle posed by a little girl standing next to a large stone at the town’s highest point. The riddle sounds more confusing than it is, but it shouldn’t take long to solve, and it’s worth the trouble to find the treasure at the end of the road.

8 The Ghost Of Hammerlocke

Ghosts are a common sight in the Pokémon world. It is one of the 18 types of Pokémon available and one of the strongest. Players are also used to human ghosts haunting the overworld, memorably seeing the ghost girl in Lumiose City and the multiple ghosts at Sinnoh’s Old Chateau.

Sword & Shield gives some depth to this old trope by featuring a little girl in Harmmelocke. She asks the player to deliver a letter to someone named Frank in Ballonlea. When arriving in the city, the player discovers that Frank is a grown man who talks about his old friend, Paula. He gives a reward for the latter, the Choice Scarf. However, not many players know that returning to Hammerlocke and approaching the place where Paula once stood will produce the Reaper Cloth.

7 Matchmaker, Matchmaker

Sword & Shield features a quick side quest where a young boy asks the player for an Applin to give to his crush, who is moving away. If this quest is completed, a short cutscene will trigger after giving the Applin to the boy. He will try to give it to the girl he likes but will confess he didn’t catch it himself, and she’ll reject it. Still, she assures him that she’ll be waiting for an Applin he actually caught.

The boy will then reward the player with a unique item. In Sword, he gives the Tart Apple, which evolves Applin into Flapple. In Shield, he instead gives the Sweet Apple, which turns Applin into Appletun.

6 Polteageist’s Duality

Pokémon evolution is full of mysteries. There are countless methods to evolve a Pokémon, and Sword & Shield introduces some of the most unique.

Polteageist evolves from Sinistea with either a Chipped Pot or a Cracked Pot. To know which one to use, players must see if their Sinistea is an actual antique or an imitation. No matter the result, Sinistea will evolve, and there are no discernable differences between the “real” and “fake” Polteageist. It’s just a curious detail, but most players can go through the entire game without knowing that their Polteageist is actually a knock-off.

5 The Many Colors Of Alcremie

And speaking of evolution, Alcremie also stands out. Inspired by whipped cream, Alcremie evolves after its Trainer spins for a certain amount of time while having a Milcerie in their party.

Players can also customize Alcremie’s colors by giving Milcerie several sweets to hold. Furthermore, Alcremie’s form will depend on the length of the spin, the time of day, and whether the player does it clockwise or counterclockwise. Players can obtain the sweets by winning at the Battle Cafe or by producing them in the Cram-o-matic. However, most players will probably stick with Alcremie’s simple form, never knowing that the Pokémon comes in many different and quirky colors.

4 Frosmoth Or Duraludon?

Duraludon is one of Generation VIII’s most inspired additions. A dual Steel/Dragon-type, Duraludon is a Dragon Master’s solution to those pesky Fairy-types. It is also one of the most English Pokémon in Galar, as it takes inspiration from the Shard, the UK’s tallest building. In fact, it has one of the best-designed Gigantamax forms that makes it look like a walking version of the building.

Because it’s such a great Pokémon, it’s also very elusive. It has only a 1% catch rate in Route 10, and it spawns at the Giant’s Seat in the Wild Area, but only after becoming Champion. However, players can trade a Frosmoth for a Duraludon at Wyndon. Frosmoth isn’t the easiest Pokémon to catch either, but it’s certainly more accessible than Duraludon.

3 The Thieving Pokémon

Taking inspiration from one of England’s greatest writing icons, Agatha Christie, Sword & Shield’s post-game throws the player into a full-blown mystery.

It involves a clueless detective investigating who ate all the berries. He has all his suspects lined up in his hotel room, and after questioning them, realizes none is the culprit. At that moment, a Skwovet walks into the room with the snout full of Berry juice. It isn’t hard to guess who ate the berries, even if the dumb detective swears it was the dancer. The side quest ends with the detective giving the player the Wide Lens, but this one’s more about the fun of cracking the mystery than the reward at the end.

2 The Lucky Egg Procurement

After becoming Champion, players can also experience what it’s like to be a food-delivery person for a day. After walking into the Hulbury restaurant where they ate with Chairman Rose in the plot’s first act, the chef will ask players to deliver several food packages.

The rewards come after each delivery, and they’re all rather worthy. The best is the last one, and after the third delivery, the chef will hand out the Lucky Egg. It’s one of the best assets in the game because it wields extra Experience Points in battle. However, because Hulbury holds few places of interest, players may never return in the post-game, making it one of the most easily missed items in Sword & Shield.

1 The Shiniest Of Prizes

Shiny-hunting is vital for many players. Sword & Shield introduced some of the best shiny Pokémon in recent generations, so naturally, many players want to catch as many as possible. The Shiny Charm is these player’s closest allies because it increases the chances of finding wild shiny Pokémon.

Players can get their hands on this rare item by talking to a doctor in Circhester City. When first talking to him, he will hand out the Catching Charm. However, after catching all 400 Pokémon in the game and talking to him again, he will give the Shiny Charm. Piece of cake!
