Five of the STRANGEST Pokémon Mysteries

No video game series has quite as many myths, legends and rumors surrounding it as the Pokémon series. These vary in legitimacy, with some having fascinating stories behind their creation. It seems like, with every new generation, there are new rumors about hidden legendaries or theories about creepy NPC dialogue. With eight generations full of content to theorize and speculate about, here are five of the strangest Pokémon mysteries out there.

The Mew Truck

Chances are that avid Pokémon fans already know this legendary rumor. The myth is that in Pokémon Red and Blue, using the Hidden Machine move Strength on a parked truck outside the cruise ship the S.S. Anne will allow the player to catch the Mythical Pokémon Mew. This isn’t actually possible, as Mew is completely unobtainable in Generation I games outside of glitches and special events.

This myth has reached legendary status amongst Pokémon fans, and it may have even been referenced by Game Freak in future games. In the Generation I remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, players can find a Lava Cookie when interacting with the same truck. This is the only place where this item can be found before the post-game. In Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee, players can find a Repel that respawns each day here instead.

Ditto Is a Failed Clone of Mew

Five of the STRANGEST Pokémon Mysteries

In the incredibly weird world of Pokémon lore, it has been established that Mewtwo was created by cloning Mew’s DNA. However, there’s a popular fan theory that speculates that there may have been some failed attempts first. This theory is inspired by the abundance of Ditto on Cinnabar Island, the place where Mewtwo was created.

Supporting this theory is that Ditto and Mew share nearly identical color palettes — both normally and when encountered as shiny Pokémon. Additionally, Mew and Ditto are the only two Pokémon who can learn the move Transform. Topping this all off is one of Mewtwo’s Pokédex entries, which suggests there were failed attempts to clone Mew. With all of this evidence, this theory seems to make too much sense to not be canon.

Lavender Town Syndrome

Another well-known Pokémon urban legend that inspired tons of creepypastas, Lavender Town Syndrome is the name for the supposed psychological effects that the original version of Lavender Town’s theme caused. According to the urban legend, the original version of the song in Pokémon Red and Green caused strange illnesses and, supposedly, a spike in suicide rates in Japan.

There’s no denying that the music is incredibly eerie, which is fitting for the town that hosts the Pokémon Tower — a cemetery for deceased Pokémon. There is some scientific evidence that certain audio wavelengths can cause headaches, nausea and dizziness, though the supposed spike in suicides is almost certainly part of this myth’s fiction. Regardless, Lavender Town’s unnerving ambiance has served as the inspiration for tons of creepy Pokémon myths.

Who Is the First Pokémon?

Five of the STRANGEST Pokémon Mysteries

While this question seems fairly straightforward, it can actually mean several different things depending on how you define the word “first.” It could refer to the first Pokémon registered in the National Dex: Bulbasaur. First could also mean the first Pokémon created by Game Freak, which (according to series director Ken Sugimori) is Rhydon.

However, fans asking this are usually questioning who the first Pokémon was within the game’s universe. Mew is often thought to fill this role, as its Sinnoh Pokédex entry claims it is the ancestor of all Pokémon. Many fans take this to mean that Mew was the first-ever Pokémon. However, it could mean that Mew is simply the oldest surviving ancestor to modern Pokémon, with any others older than Mew being extinct.

Regardless of if there were Pokémon before Mew, there are four legendaries that are confirmed to have existed before Mew, giving this mystery a fairly definitive answer. Arceus is said to be the creator of the universe, hatching from an Egg that appeared from nothingness. Arceus went on to create Dialga, Palkia and Giratina to rule time, space and antimatter respectively. It’s unknown if Mew was created by Arceus or is simply a relic of a long-extinct evolutionary track, but the true first Pokémon is Arceus.

MissingNo.

MissingNo. is the fan-name given to a glitch Pokémon that appears in Red and Blue. The first two games are notoriously easy to glitch and exploit, but MissingNo. stands out for two big reasons: the lore fans have built up around the “character” and just how accessible the glitch is. Before explaining how to find MissingNo., it’s important to mention that this glitch can corrupt save files and should be performed with caution.

To start, the player needs to perform the Old Man Glitch which involves having the Old Man in Viridian City demonstrate how to catch a Pokémon. After the demonstration, the player should immediately use Fly to Cinnabar Island and Surf along the city’s coastline without entering a new route. This causes the game to fill the wild Pokémon data for the coast using letters from the player’s name. If the player is using a custom name, they are guaranteed to encounter a level 80 Pokémon known as MissingNo.

MissingNo. has become an unofficial Pokémon in many people’s minds, with it even appearing in several popular Pokémon ROM-hacks. It’s been often called one of the most well-known video game glitches of all time, and remains the only unofficial Pokémon to have art made by an official artist for the series. MissingNo. is similar to Ermac from Mortal Kombat, as it was an in-game error that fans fell in love with and elevated to legendary status.
