There is an abundance of useful abilities within the Pokémon games, which makes the gameplay much more interesting since it gives players one additional element to focus on during battles. These exceptional abilities can make strong Pokémon stronger, and even manage to make weak Pokémon more viable.

There are many weak Pokémon with abilities that would be better on stronger Pokémon, but due to what the Pokédex says about their lifestyles, habitats, and bodies, these moves are surprisingly fitting choices for them. The abilities are so good that it makes it worthwhile to evolve these Pokémon if that’s a possibility.

10 Ekans Has Intimidate To Lower Attack

Ekans isn’t a particularly powerful Pokémon, as it prefers to avoid head-to-head combat in favor of sneak attacks. It typically steals eggs from nests, relying on its stealth and its detachable jaw to capture its prey. It can grow over 6 feet long, which explains why it would be able to use Intimidate. When a Pokémon with this ability enters battle, enemy Pokémon have their attack stat lowered by a single stage. It’s a great ability that can instantly cut down an opponent’s damage.

9 Hippopotas Has Sand Stream To Start A Sandstorm

All of this Pokémon’s base stats are only in the double digits, but it has one of the most annoying abilities in the game. Instead of sweating, Hippopotas expels sand from its body. This sand enshrouds the Pokémon and protects it from germs.

Considering all the sand it releases into the air, it is easy for it to start up a Sandstorm using its ability, Sand Stream. Sandstorms deal damage to all Pokémon at the end of five rounds except for Rock, Steel, and Ground-types.

8 Rhyhorn Has Lightning Rod To Absorb Electric Attacks

Rhyhorn’s body is 1000 times harder than human bones. However, the Pokédex points out that this Pokémon isn’t very agile or bright. It has a tiny brain and often forgets why it’s running until it crashes into something. Sometimes, it runs until it falls asleep. Rhyhorn has Lightning Rod, an ability that forces all Electric attacks to hit it. Rhyhorn is already completely immune to Electric-type moves, and its ability raises its Special Attack, which seems like a bit of a waste for a physically offensive Ground/Rock-type.

7 Geodude Has Rock Head To Prevent Recoil Damage

Geodude is a Pokémon that is proud of its sturdy body, bashing itself against other Geodude to see who is stronger. Since its body is made of rock, its ability, Rock Head, is entirely accurate. Rock Head prevents the user from taking recoil damage from any moves that it uses, with the exception of Struggle. Geodude is able to learn Double-Edge, but this ability would be better on Pokémon who can learn many hard-hitting moves that usually do recoil damage.

6 Shuckle Has Sturdy To Prevent It From Being 1 Hit K.O.’d

Shuckle isn’t all that strong, boasting minuscule offensive stats. However, it has 230 base Defense and Special Defense, as this turtle-like Pokémon prefers to stay out of sight and hide in its shell. Since Shuckle is more concerned about protecting itself, it has the ability Sturdy. Any move that would have taken it out from full HP in one hit will instead leave it a 1 HP. It can be used multiple times in a battle if Shuckle is brought back to full HP.

5 Magby Has Flame Body To Burn Enemies

Being a baby Pokémon, Magby is at the lowest stage of evolution, preceding Magmar. Although it is small and timid, it has blood as hot as magma, and according to the Pokédex, its body reaches temperatures over 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. It makes sense for Magby to have Flame Body, an ability that has a 30% chance of burning enemy Pokémon who use physical moves against it. However, judging by the ridiculously high temperatures of its body, it should have a 100% chance of inflicting a burn.

4 Mudbray Has Stamina To Raise Its Defense

Despite the Pokédex’s claims that Mudbray can carry up to 50 times its own body weight, Mudbray only has one base stat in the triple digits, and that is its base Attack of 100. Stamina is a great ability that would be absolutely terrifying on a Pokémon with a high base Defense, as getting hit by a move raises a Pokémon’s Defense by a single stage. This ability is better on its evolved form, Mudsdale, which has 30 more base Defense than Mudbray.

3 Mimikyu Has Disguise To Reduce The Damage Of An Attack

When Mimikyu enters the battle, it is in its Disguised Form. However, taking damage from an attack changes it to its Busted Form. This Pokémon is always seen in its Pikachu costume, as anyone who looks upon its true form will die tragically.

This Disguise takes the brunt of the opponent’s first attack, and although Mimikyu takes damage equal to 1/8th of its maximum HP, this is nothing compared to what the original damage would have been.

2 Komala Has Comatose To Stay Asleep

Thanks to the sedative effect of the leaves Komala consumes, it is asleep for its entire life. Its ability, Comatose, treats Komala like it is always asleep, so it is able to use moves such as Snore and Sleep Talk. It is also immune to Status Conditions, which is the best part of this ability. It is impressive that a Pokémon that is asleep all the time is able to listen to its trainer, as this Pokémon usually moves in response to its dreams.

1 Mareanie Has Merciless To Land Consistent Crits

Mareanie is a Poison-type Pokémon whose poison isn’t quite as strong as that of its evolved form. While Toxapex’s sting can cause extreme pain for three days and three nights, Mareanie’s sting only causes numbness, followed by intense itching. Given all of the poisonous moves in Mareanie’s arsenal, Merciless is the perfect ability for it. Any attacks that hit a poisoned target will always be critical hits.
