To promote the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, which releases June 17, players can obtain free Pokémon through Mystery Gift. After giving away the Galarian Forms of Mr. Mime and Ponyta, players can obtain a Galarian Corsola from now until June 11. From June 12 through 18, Galarian Meowth will be available.

In addition to being great news for Pokémon Sword players, as Galarian Corsola is exclusive to Shield, this particular Corsola has its Hidden Ability, Cursed Body, which makes it even more useful for competitive play. Here’s how to get the most out of your Galarian Corsola.

Background

Unlike its original Water/Rock-type Johtonian form, Galarian Corsola is a pure Ghost-type. While this reference to real-life coral reefs dying off due to climate change is quite morbid, this new typing actually works in Galarian Corsola’s favor. Pure Ghost-types are pretty good defensively, as they are only weak to Dark-types and other Ghosts while resisting Bug and Poison and being completely immune to Normal and Fighting.

While Galarian Corsola does have a new evolution with the introduction of Cursola, we recommend keeping your Corsola unevolved, as this allows players to take advantage of the Eviolite. This is a held item that has been part of the games since Generation V that increases the Defense and Special Defense of a Pokémon by 50 percent so long as it is not fully evolved. Since Corsola works best as a defensive wall against physical attacks, this boost is incredibly helpful.

Stats and Nature

Recent games have made it easier to take any individual Pokémon of a species and make them useful in competitive play. While things like IVs and natures were once locked, meaning players needed to breed or get incredibly lucky to get competitively viable Pokémon, Sun and Moon introduced Bottle Caps to max out IVs, and Sword and Shield added Mints to change the effects of a Pokémon’s nature on its stats. Note that using a Mint will not actually change what nature the Pokémon has and all of the other mechanics that come with it.

Ideally, you’ll want your Corsola to have a Bold nature, which boosts its Defense while decreasing its Attack. Relaxed (which boosts Defense and lowers Speed) could also work, though Corsola really doesn’t need its Attack stat. If you can’t fully max out its IVs with a Gold Bottle Cap, feel free to leave its Attack as is. In terms of EVs, max out its HP and Defense, then put the last four points into Special Defense.

Moveset and Strategy

For Corsola’s moveset, you’ll absolutely want to have Strength Sap, which restores your HP based on your target’s Attack stat while lowering their Attack. Burning your target with Will-o-Wisp is also useful, and between these two moves, you’ll be able to gradually damage and weaken your foe while keeping yourself healthy. Corsola is also a great option to set up Stealth Rock, which damages any opponent switching into battle.

For the last move, you have some options. You’ll want to have a damaging move that uses Corsola’s Special Attack, preferably a Ghost-type move for same-type attack bonus (STAB). Night Shade probably your best option here, as it does damage equal to the user’s level. Another option is Hex. Though it normally only has a base power of 65, this doubles to 130 when used on an opponent that’s inflicted with a non-volatile status condition like burn. While it has a lot of potential, it’s riskier and less consistent than Night Shade because it depends on the target getting and remaining burned.

Finally, you’ll definitely want to have Galarian Corsola’s Hidden Ability, Cursed Body, over it’s normal ability, Weak Armor. Weak Armor lowers its Defense every time it’s hit in favor of a sharp boost to Speed, which is counterproductive for a tank. With Cursed Body, Corsola has a 30 percent chance of disabling a damaging move used against it. With its high defense boosted by the Eviolite, Galarian Corsola will be able to take hits while dealing damage and reducing its opponent’s ability to take it down.
