Wrapping up beloved shows can be a daunting task for its creators and writers due to the huge expectations from fans. Tying up the story arcs of six or more characters perfectly within 20 minutes is pretty close to impossible.

And it’s almost a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t, because if there isn’t a big dramatic and emotional ending it feels underwhelming. But a finale could be just as disappointing if it tries too hard to pull at the heartstrings of fans. There are arguably more series finales that are bad than good, and in some cases, even when the show does have a good finale, they ruin it with a reunion years later.

10 Stacked

Stacked certainly isn’t a show known for being smart, which is ironic considering it’s based in a book store. The title says it all, as it’s a double entendre, referring to ‘the stacks’ at the bookstore, as well as the main character’s (Pamela Anderson) chest. Skyler gets a job a book store as she tries to give up her partying lifestyle, and the finale falls just as flat as most of the other 19 episodes.

In the finale, Skyler goes on a date with a headmaster, which leads to a bunch of different-interests jokes that just don’t work. However, the one saving grace is Harold, the old man who drinks coffee all day at the book store, as he realizes he’s missed out on years of free coffee by not taking advantage of the stamp system.

9 Roseanne

The ninth season of Roseanne is completely bizarre, and that’s putting it lightly. From winning over $100 million dollars at the beginning of the season to partying with celebs to Dan cheating on her, it seemed like the plot for each episode was picked at random.

But the very final episode of the show threw fans off completely, as it turned out that everything that happened in season nine was all made up for a book that Roseanne was writing. Not only that, but Dan actually died in a coma at the end of season eight, and writing the book was Roseanne’s way of coping with it. The finale was so bad that it was even announced that it wasn’t canon when the show got revived 20 years later.

8 My Name Is Earl

My Name Is Earl is one of the worst finales purely because of how frustrating the last scene is. Unlike most other series finales, it wasn’t known that the show wasn’t going to get renewed for a fifth season, and as the last scene ends on the show’s biggest cliffhanger, it’s one of the shows we’ll never get closure for. What’s more annoying is that it literally says “to be continued” when it cuts to black. However, the creator’s other show, Raising Hope, did wrap up one of My Name Is Earl’s loose ends by revealing that he finally completed his list.

7 Seinfeld

Seinfeld has a lot of great episode endings, but one it couldn’t land was the very last episode. There was a lot of hype surrounding the finale, as it even had the co-creator of the show, Larry David, return to write the script after he had left seasons beforehand. Though the concept of the gang ending up in jail is hilarious, the episode ended up being a glorified clip show, as all the old characters were called to the witness stand in court and recalled their experiences with the group.

However, the finale has sort-of been rectified as David’s other show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, sees the comedian play his real-life self developing a reunion episode of Seinfeld, and all of the main characters return.

6 Scrubs

As the eighth season of Scrubs has the perfect finale and wrapped up every character’s story arc, as it was planned to be the last season (it was even called “My Finale,”) the show ended up returning for one more.

Though it shifted focus from J.D. as the main character, all of the major players from the series popped up throughout season 9 intermittently, but it wasn’t enough to distract from the awful new characters. Season nine completely undid the perfect finale, and the very final episode was completely soulless by comparison. However, there are some people who believe the season isn’t as bad as people say it is.

5 Work It

Work It is an incredibly controversial sitcom, and it was so despised that there were protests outside ABC to get it canceled, due to offensive and inaccurate portrayals of trans people. The show follows two men who get laid off from their jobs, which leads to them posing as women in order to land new jobs. Most of the humor is offensive and deeply problematic. The last episode ever aired specifically addressed transgender people, but it was far too little, far too late.

4 How I Met Your Mother

Though it was classed as the Friends of the new millennium, How I Met Your Mother didn’t exactly end in the perfect way that Friends did. The finale infuriated many fans, as it switches from Ted and Tracy (the titular Mother) getting married to Tracy becoming sick in a flash. It wasn’t something that had been building over a season, it was just tagged on in the last five minutes after it took nine years to get to this point. And then it’s revealed that Ted’s still in love with Robyn, further reducing what little weight there was to Tracy’s death.

3 Girls

Just as is Girls tradition, the finale wasn’t exactly a happy farewell between the characters, there was no bittersweet ending, and the main couple didn’t end up together.

Though it was to be expected that it was going to end this way, fans hated the way the finale played out, as the four main girls weren’t even all on-screen together in the final episode. Every character but Marnie and Hannah was completely sidelined, which is one of the things that makes no sense about the series. What’s worse is that Marnie never developed throughout the show, as she was just as selfish in the last episode as she was in the first episode.

2 Cavemen

Following the lives of Cavemen living alongside human beings in the modern world, the show tried to be some kind of commentary on racism, but ended up only fanning the flames by making countless racist jokes. Being another minority, the cavemen in the show face various issues, as women don’t want to sleep with them and they are unable to get jobs. The plot of the finale is stretched even thinner as one of the cavemen gets into trouble for parking in the wrong spot, which resorts in him and a Homo sapien calling each other racial slurs that make no sense and are totally void of humor.

1 Two And A Half Man

Ever since Charlie was killed off in season eight of Two and a Half Men, the series was on a downward spiral, but no other show ended in a way that was more unsatisfying while at the same time completely insulting its fan base.

The episode is full of fourth-wall breaking jokes, as actors break character by explaining they’ve only been saying stupid jokes for so long because of how much they get paid. It was disappointing in so many ways, but the worst of all may be how the creator Chuck Lorre made it all about himself, and every other joke was a cheap shot at Charlie Sheen.
