10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

The Lady and the Tramp, Aladdin, Dumbo, these are just some of the most recent animated Disney classics translated into new live-action stories for a supposed new generation of Disney fans. But Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast have always been beloved films since they were released in the 1990s.

What about the less popular titles in the Disney catalog? Which of those might have more success with real actors rather than cartoon characters? Who might be more popular this time around than the first? Here are ten of the least beloved Disney animated films that might just be bigger the second time around.

10 Recess School’s Out

It was never a classic, but the film was based on a much-beloved Saturday morning cartoon. Perhaps the antics of fourth-graders T.J, Ashley, Vince, Gus, Gretchen, and Mikey would be more hysterical is performed by live actors.

Like the Lady and the Tramp before it, a made for Disney + version of the film might be more appreciated, and more well-liked than the original animated version ever was.

9 Doug’s 1st Movie

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

Like Recess, Doug was a beloved television cartoon before it made the jump to the big screen. It wasn’t the success of the animated original films that Disney pumped out before the new millennium.

But, perhaps, it could make a splash as a Disney + television movie. It would at least be amusing to see how the Doug characters would make the jump from turquoise coloring to real-life actors, and that might just draw more love and attention than the original film.

8 Pocahontas

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

Pocahontas had some great music but has always been a bit controversial for its lack of historical accuracy. Perhaps, as a live-action remake, it could embrace more of its history (as the upcoming Mulan seems to be doing) and also promote better representation for minorities in terms of casting the Native American characters.

There’s certainly a story there, and this could be the perfect time to rewrite the wrongs and represent American history as more than “simple” imperial conquest.

7 The Jungle Book 2

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

The Jungle Book 2 is the lowest-ranked Disney animated film on Rotten Tomatoes, yet it should be held up as proof that some animated classics can in fact be better as live-action remakes.

The Jon Favreau directed 2016 live-action remake of The Jungle Book, ranks higher on the site than the beloved original film, which means that The Jungle Book 2 could certainly find its way out of the basement if it was given the same treatment and devices story structure.

6 Brother Bear

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

Jon Favreau’s remake of both The Jungle Book as well as The Lion King again offers evidence that Brother Bear could be much more successful as a live-action feature. Motion capture and computer animation have come far enough that animals can reach lifelike heights on screen, so any technical worries about Brother Bear no longer apply.

The story was never bad, just never a classic, and perhaps with a live actor trying to find his way back to his own human form, the story might connect more with audiences.

5 Oliver and Company

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

Again, Jon Favreau’s success with The Jungle Book and The Lion King prove that technology could stand-in for the animal stars of the Billy Joel starring Oliver and Company, but Lady and the Tramp also prove that real-life animal actors can also make a splash in a live-action adaptation.

Either direction could work in bringing Oliver and Company out of the shadows and into the spotlight of Disney popularity. There was never anything wrong with the story of some street dogs and an orphan kitten. What’s not to like about cats and puppies on screen?

4 Robin Hood

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

Robin Hood didn’t make the same mark as other Disney animated features, but its fox protagonist and lion “king” before the Lion King existed certainly make it recognizable.

Disney is already betting that a live-action version (along the lines of The Lion King and The Jungle Book) would be a major success. They are already planning a live-action remake of the classic and hope it will rank much higher on the list of Disney live-action films than it did on the list of animated features.

3 Return to Neverland

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

The original Peter Pan is already slated to get its own live-action remake, so why not the forgotten younger sibling?

Problems that were highlighted concerning this second story in Disney’s Peter Pan outing can all be ironed out in a remake since the problems have already been pointed out in advance. And, if the live-action original works out then all the technology for a Return to Neverland will already be in place as well.

2 Atlantis

10 Worst Disney Animated movies (According to Rotten Tomatoes) That Would Work Better In LiveAction

Atlantis may have featured the vocal stylings of Michael J. Fox, but it never took off as a Disney classic. That could all be taken care of if a live-action remake was considered. Atlantis was a classic adventure movie, more than a classic Disney cartoon with singalong capabilities when it was released.

That means it’s already got the type of plot that would work even better on-screen with live actors coupled with special effects and CGI. Atlantis could be the hit it always wanted to be with real stunts.

1 The Black Cauldron

Like Atlantis, The Black Cauldron was always an adventure movie, although far more fantasy-based than Atlantis’s sci-fi beginnings. Based on a Newberry winning fantasy novel the story was always there, and always popular.

With a young cast and new special effects, the film could certainly be the hit it always wanted, especially in this time of fantasy obsessed (see Harry Potter and Game of Thrones) audiences.
