What a show! After months of speculation, rumors, and predictions, Nintendo has finally come out of the gate with their E3 2017 Spotlight. In just 25 minutes, they succinctly went through every big game they were working on for the Nintendo Switch. Needless to say, the Internet is losing its mind.
While the presentation itself was fairly short, there was a lot to dig into. From the very first moments, we got new information to look at, ranging from details for a game we already knew about to a completely new release altogether. It was one of those rare presentations where there was something for everybody.
Enough raving about their announcements, though. We know some of you might not have been able to watch the entire show or have been getting bits and pieces through social media. Because of this, we’ve put together some big things we noticed in the spotlight for you all to know. Due to the nature of this list, we’ll be largely staying away from just talking about the games and their titles though. Instead, we’ll be highlighting the specific things we learned about what the Big N has coming to the Switch.
With that out of the way, let’s proceed with 15 things you might have missed in Nintendo’s E3 2017 Spotlight. If you don’t know anything about the presentation yet, I will warn you that there were some big games revealed.
15 Nintendo Gear In Rocket League
One of the surprise announcements from Nintendo was that Rocket League, the crazy soccer meets demolition derby game, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. However, with it, there are some new things that owners of the Switch version can look forward to other than simply taking it on the go.
Rocket League for the Switch will feature new hats and equipment based on Nintendo characters. While at this time, only Mario and Luigi hats were shown off, Psyonix stated that new cars and items will be coming to the version. It’s possible that the Mario and Luigi hats are the only Nintendo-based items we’ll see, but more details are sure to be revealed before the game drops.
14 The Girl Is A Blade
After their opening footage (showing off ARMS, Splatoon 2, and Rocket League), they decided to get the ball rolling with a game that many of us weren’t expecting to see in their presentation: Xenoblade Chronicles 2. With the footage, we got a look at the story for the game and who we can expect to fight with when it eventually hits store shelves.
One big story detail was that the main character of the game must team up with a girl. However, this girl also happens to be the blade that the main character uses to fight. What makes this is a bit more confusing is that she’s seen separate from the sword. Due to her design and the footage shown, it’s clear that she’s tethered to it somehow, but we’re unsure how it works specifically.
13 Playing As Enemies In Kirby
Another announcement nobody saw coming was that Kirby would be coming to the Switch in 2018. This isn’t a drawing game, either. This is a true Kirby title crafted in full HD. This revelation was followed by some gameplay footage that showcased Kirby teaming up with three other friends in the game. However, this comes with some added differences.
Recent Kirby games have allowed other players to control Bandana Dee, Meta Knight, King Dedede, or another Kirby. This time around, it seems that other players will be able to control enemies found in the levels similarly to a mechanic in Kirby Super Star. Keeping this in mind, it’s a safe bet that we could see players take control of all the classic enemies, ranging from Knuckle Joe to Waddle Doo.
12 Yoshi’s Story 2?
As it turns out, Kirby isn’t the only platformer Nintendo has been working on for the Switch. They revealed that a new Yoshi game would also be coming to the hybrid console. Due to the success and positive reception of Yoshi’s Woolly World, it makes sense that Nintendo would want to continue that trend.
This time around, Yoshi travels in a world made out of paper and cardboard as opposed to yarn. Immediately, this brings back memories of playing through Yoshi’s Story, as everything looked like it came out of a pop-up book. While this might only be a spiritual successor, we wonder if Nintendo is creating a sequel to the platforming hit from the N64. Either way, placing Yoshi in another art style is extremely pleasing to the eyes and the game looks to distinguish itself from other platformers.
11 No Link in Breath Of The Wild DLC?
A few of these entries will be based on speculation, but when putting two and two together, it really makes us wonder. Alongside many new games, Nintendo also took some time to talk about the DLC coming to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While they spent time talking about the first wave, they also dropped the name of the extra story mode coming to the second pack.
It is called The Champions’ Ballad and features unique artwork for Zelda and the four champions found in the game. This immediately makes us wonder if it will be a story set before Link was placed in the Shrine of Resurrection. From what was shown, it seems as if it could center around Zelda and the Champions rather than Link himself (he was mysteriously absent from the artwork).
10 Unique Rabbids Footage
Hands down the strangest game announced this entire E3 was Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for the Nintendo Switch. The game was leaked before E3 ever began, but it was given its proper reveal during Ubisoft’s press conference. A trailer was given and gameplay was shown off, which led many to believe that it wouldn’t come up during Nintendo’s presentation.
However, that’s not the case. The game made a brief appearance during the Spotlight, yet it came with some new footage that revealed a bit more about what to expect from the game. While it was nothing earth shattering, it was nice to not have to look at the same thing twice to keep the Spotlight moving at a fast pace.
9 Fire Emblem Awakening And Fates Warriors
Fire Emblem Warriors has been in the works since Nintendo did their big Switch presentation back in January. As expected, we saw a bit more of the game in action, including story details and new characters. However, unlike Hyrule Warriors, there is something a bit different regarding who is coming to Fire Emblem Warriors.
The game will primarily include characters from Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates. Don’t expect to see any more fighters from Echoes or Radiant Dawn. Expect some classic faces like Marth, Corrin, and Robin. But apart from some original characters created specifically for the game, don’t expect anything outside of the popular hits from the 3DS. While Nintendo’s reasoning for this is unclear, there’s no doubt that it has something to do with the success of both of those games.
8 Mario Can Possess Enemies
As many of us expected, Nintendo released more footage and details for Super Mario Odyssey. After starting out with a Monster Hunter fake out, the trailer shows off more of what Mario can do in the game. He gets different outfits, will be traveling through different eras in history (Mario’s Time Machine, anyone?) and even get his own snazzy white suit (complete with some sick Amiibo).
However, the most interesting aspect of the trailer was the fact that Mario can now possess enemies through the use of his special hat. He has shown possessing a Goomba, Bullet Bill, and even a T-Rex itself. What makes this mechanic especially charming is that possessed creatures will have Mario’s new hat on their heads and a mustache over their faces.
7 Retro No Show
Easily the biggest announcement from the presentation was that Metroid Prime 4 was currently being developed for the Switch. However, and this might come as a shock to you, Retro Studios is not behind this project. Instead, Nintendo has detailed that it was instead being worked on by another extremely talented team.
This begs the question: what in the world is Retro working on? The short answer is that we don’t know. No games were shown that clearly had Retro’s hand, nor did Nintendo divulge any information regarding the company. Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze came out all the way back in 2014. Surely they must be putting together another project now, right? We know they’re working on something, it’s just a matter of figuring out what it will be.
6 Bigger Bosses In BoTW
Along with The Champions’ Ballad, Nintendo detailed more information on the first DLC pack for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, otherwise known as The Master Trials. This first wave of content will introduce a new Master Mode to the game, which will up the difficulty significantly (as if the game needs it). On top of adding floating platforms where enemies will shoot from, it will also affect the bosses themselves.
As you might expect, the bosses are also being affected by this mode. While there isn’t much different in terms of size and aesthetic, the bosses are tougher to take down. Footage of Link fighting a Stone Talus in this mode is shown. During the battle, the boss’s health bar flashes colors. This probably means that they will have more health, making each fight longer.
5 The Big Holiday Title
Every year, Nintendo tries to put a big game together in time for Christmas and make it their massive holiday release. It happened in the past with Super Smash Bros and now it’s bound to happen again. However, many people expected it to be Super Mario Odyssey, but because the game is now slated for an October release date, what will their new holiday release be?
The answer is Xenoblade Chronicles 2. While no specific date was revealed, the presentation stated that it would be coming out during the holiday season of this year. While we’re still unsure if Nintendo will deliver on that promise (the game could still very well be delayed), it would be a successful Christmas for the Switch having both Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on the system.
4 Sidescrolling Mario
There is a lot to Super Mario Odyssey. Apart from the hat possession skills, there were numerous other details revealed about the game. One scene in particular showcased Mario in his pixelated form as he walked along a wall. All the while, he had to jump and dodge other 2D Bullet Bills and collect some coins.
This means that there will be some kind of function in the game that will have players taking Mario back to his roots. We’re betting that it has something to do with that special hat. It’s nice to know that in a big 3D platformer like Super Mario Odyssey, many attempts are being made to shake up the gameplay and make it stand out among the best in the Mario franchise.
3 Pauline?
There are several things that will remain consistent in the world: Facebook will be a poor place to express opinions, food will always be necessary for life, and Mario games will have fantastic music. During the trailer for Super Mario Odyssey, there is a female singer giving a bombastic piece for Mario to run and jump to. As the trailer moves on, we see Mario running through several different worlds, while going back to New Donk City a few times.
However, when it’s revealed who the singer is from the back, we get a strange sense of familiarity. Sporting a red dress and dark brown hair, we can’t help but wonder if that woman is Pauline. If that’s the case, this would be the first time she would appear in a main series Mario game. Perhaps this is just a nod, but it’d be interesting to see her interact with Princess Peach.
2 CORE Pokémon Game On The Switch
After the less than exciting Pokémon Direct a few days ago, we got some exciting news from Game Freak that would directly appeal to fans of the series. The trailer moved over to the director for the Pokémon series and he announced that Game Freak was working on a core Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch. Make note of the word “core” here. No Mystery Dungeons or Rangers. This is the real deal: a fully realized console Pokémon experience.
Unfortunately, it was stated that the game could still be in development for quite some time and no footage was shown as a result. Nonetheless, the sky is the limit when talking about this game. For all we know, it could be a reimagining of the original Red and Blue (that’s where my hopes are). Whatever it becomes, there is no doubt that fans will be talking about Pokémon on the Switch until the day it comes out.
1 Emphasis On The Journey
As the presentation began, Reggie Fils-Aimé took to the stage to talk about what the people at Nintendo are envisioning for the Nintendo Switch. He stated many times that games are all about the journey and the experience rather than creating another title just because it’s going to sell well with the public.
Take into account many of the different games coming out for the console: Super Mario Odyssey, ARMS, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Rocket League, etc. Each one of them boasts an entirely different experience that will transport players to a new world each time. Placing an emphasis on this aspect of gaming means great things for the future of the console as well as the future of Nintendo.
