Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

Here’s every sci-fi movie releasing in 2022. It’s a rewarding time to be a sci-fi fan; Star Trek is back on television and (arguably) doing better than ever thanks to Discovery and Picard. Meanwhile, storytellers like Alex Garland continue to churn out original series like Devs and film buffs have the upcoming (smart) sci-fi blockbusters Dune and The Matrix Resurrections to look forward to. On top of all that, 2022 is currently loaded with long-awaited sci-fi projects like the third installment of the Jurassic World trilogy. and what will supposedly be the first of a whopping four followups to James Cameron’s 2009 mega-blockbuster Avatar.

With the release calendar still a bit in flux as the coronavirus pandemic sadly rages on, 2022 is chock-full with sci-fi movies in general – and that number will only grow if anything else proves unable to hit its current date in 2021. Big movies are filling up the 2022 release calendar, and most of them fall under the jurisdiction of the superhero and/or fantasy genres. At the same time, there are also a number of superhero projects coming out which ground their mythology squarely in sci-fi tropes (be it advanced technology, aliens from another planet, or advanced alien technology from another planet).

Naturally, there are a few movies coming out in 2022 which blur the line between sci-fi and fantasy. But even outside of those, there’s still plenty to talk about when it comes to the films sci-fi fanatics can look forward to checking out sometime within the next year. So, here’s every sci-fi movie currently set to open in 2022.

Morbius – January 28, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

Originally slated to open in theaters on July 10, 2020, Morbius has been delayed a whopping five times on its way the current January 28, 2022 date, mostly thanks to Coronavirus concerns. Jared Leto stars as the titular scientist turned living vampire, in this third entry into Sony’s universe of Marvel characters related to Spider-Man. There’s some MCU crossover though, as Michael Keaton reprises his role of Vulture.

Moonfall – February 4, 2022

The latest sci-fi disaster film from director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow), Moonfall probably won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but should provide some action-packed thrills. Halle Berry stars as NASA executive Jo Fowler, who when the moon gets knocked into a collision course with Earth, believes she has the key to mankind’s survival. The trouble is, few believe her, leading to a three-person space mission to stop the impact.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – March 25, 2022

Over five years after his solo debut, Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer supreme gets a sequel with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As usual for Marvel, little is known about the sequel this far out from release, but Scarlet Witch will join the fun, and Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi is taking over the helm from Scott Derrickson for what’s being touted as the MCU’s closest thing to a horror movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – April 8, 2022

After a debut movie in 2020 that proved more successful than just about anyone imagined it would, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees the blue alien hedgehog chilling in his new home on Earth, at least until the newly named Dr. Eggman returns from exile with new pal Knuckles. This leaves Sonic and best friend Tails to duke it out with the former Robtnik and his echidna partner before the bad guys can obtain a Chaos Emerald.

Thor: Love and Thunder – May 6, 2022

After 2017’s beloved Thor: Ragnarok, many fans hoped writer/director Taika Waititi would return to the helm of Thor’s next adventure, and thankfully, he’s back for Thor: Love and Thunder. The fourth Thor outing will see the return of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who becomes Thor’s female counterpart. The Guardians of the Galaxy are also in the mix, and Christian Bale is onboard to play villain Gorr the God Butcher.

From writers/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) comes 65, a still quite mysterious sci-fi thriller starring Adam Driver. Driver plays an astronaut who crash lands onto a desolate unknown planet, but before long discovers that’s the least of his worries, thanks to unwanted company.

Lightyear – June 17, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

While it isn’t quite Toy Story 5, 2022’s Lightyear will bring back Buzz Lightyear, the Toy Story franchise’s resident space ranger. This time though, the focus is on the “real” Buzz fighting alien foes, not a doll of Buzz trying to avoid psycho children and evil teddy bears. Chris Evans is set to voice this more serious take on Buzz Lightyear, with Finding Dory co-director Angus MacLane taking the helm.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – June 24, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

Paramount’s alien-robots-in-disguise series has lost some of its box office luster of late, with 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight disappointing financially and the prequel Bumblebee failing to crack $500 million despite strong reviews (easily the best for a Transformers movie yet). Nevertheless, the studio currently has three Transformers movies in some stage of development; including, a Bumblebee sequel or spinoff, a live-action movie based on the Beast Wars spinoff series, and an animated prequel about Cybertron. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the second of those three planned options, and can hopefully reverse the franchise’s flagging fortunes.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – July 8, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

While most Marvel Studios movies are shrouded in some level of secrecy, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is even more mysterious than most, likely due to it being in a position no one really expected when it was first announced. That’s of course a result of the tragically young death of actor Chadwick Boseman. While it seems likely T’Challa will be killed offscreen between movies to avoid recasting, it remains to be seen which character will rise up and become the new Black Panther.

Black Adam – July 29, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

As has seemingly become a trend in recent years, Black Adam will see DC take another character more known for being a villain and turn them into an antiheroic lead. In this case the subject is Black Adam, Shazam’s arch-enemy who draws his powers from the same wizard source. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars, in what’s been a passion project for the wrestler turned actor, and finally sees him enter the lucrative superhero genre.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 – October 7, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

Up until this point, the Spider-Man movies have all been firmly based in sci-fi. That’s especially true of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the beloved, Oscar-winning animated flick that opened the door to a literal multiverse of spider-heroes – from otherwise regular teenager Gwen Stacy to the spider-turned radioactive pig bite victim Spider-Ham. The upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 promises to takes things ever further in that direction by paying off the first movie’s credits scene with Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara (aka. Spider-Man 2099). Sony bumped the film back from April 8 to October 7, 2022 as part of its post-coronavirus adjustments.

The Flash – November 4, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

Another superhero powered by (fictional) science, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen is finally getting a DCEU movie after emerging as one of the standouts in 2017’s not-so-beloved Justice League. The Flash project’s passed through several hands by this point, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, and John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein having signed on to direct over the years before stepping down. Even Miller took a turn writing the screenplay at one point. However, it appears the movie’s actually going to happen this time, with IT’s Andy Muschiett directing from a script by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson. In addition Miller’s return as Barry, both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s versions of Batman are also taking part.

The Marvels – November 11, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

After a handful of MCU appearances since her hit 2019 debut movie, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel gets a bigger spotlight once again in The Marvels, but not quite a solo one. Instead, she’ll be joined by Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), fresh off gaining superpowers in WandaVision, and newcomer Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) in a team-up project. Considering Monica’s issues with Carol Danvers though, the union may be tenuous.

Avatar 2 – December 16, 2022

Every SciFi Movie Releasing In 2022

Over a decade after the first Avatar movie soared to the top of the all-time box office chart, director James Cameron is finally preparing to unleash his blockbuster sequel Avatar 2, the first of four planned follow-ups. Avatar 2’s many delays have become a bit of a running joke in recent years, but that likely won’t matter when it comes out and cleans up at the box office. The question is whether or not it’ll knock off its own predecessor for the all-time top spot.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – December 16, 2022

Curiously, the current release slate has titanic sequels Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set to clash head to head for box office dollars near the end of 2022. It seems likely one or the other will blink at some point, as while Aquaman wasn’t quite as big a hit as Avatar, it still made over $1.1 billion worldwide. Aquaman 2 will see Jason Momoa back as Atlantean king Arthur Curry, with Amber Heard back as Mera, and Patrick Wilson back as Arthur’s devious half-brother Orm.
