With so many adaptations of books and television shows coming to the big screen, we had to wonder about who should play some favorite characters.

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Have you ever finished a book, seen a film, or powered through a game and then felt a sharp stab of painful longing when you read/heard the last line? And then you just find yourself sitting there and wishing that you could find some way to stay in that world without having to rewatch/read the entire piece that you’ve just completed.

So you turn to the internet. You scour forums to see what others said about your new favorite thing, you dream up headcanons when the limitations of canon become too restrictive, and you find yourself imagining what would happen if this glorious piece of media was ever remade. Who would play who? Which actors would best bring our beloved characters to life if Hollywood ever decided to stop making nonstop sequels and superhero movies?

To preface this article, I wanted to note that the actors chosen will not always be playing these roles at their current age. If needed, they will be age-adjusted in order to play the characters they’ve been cast as when they were at a closer age to that role. Hair can be dyed, beards can be grown, and contacts could be worn. So we are focusing on roles that these actors have played in the past and their public persona, and how the interplay of these two aspects lend to them being the perfect choice for each role.

So without further ado, here are 20 fan-casts that Hollywood needs to see as soon as possible.

20 The Marauders: The Potter Prequel We Deserve

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Not to write off the Fantastic Beasts series entirely, but in all honesty, I was never that curious as what happened with Newt and Grindelwald. Their plots were explained in the original series. What strikes me as odd is that we are continuing to get stories that no one asked for out of the wizarding world but our constant cries for a prequel featuring everyone’s favorite Marauders continue to fall on deaf ears. So allow me to vocalize who I (and many people on the internet) believe should play these infamous roles. James should be immortalized by Aaron Taylor Johnson (pictured above) while his fiery life partner could only be done justice by none other than Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan (pictured above). Their gaggle of misfits could be filled by Ezra Miller as Sirius Black, Avan Jogia as Remus Lupin, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Peter Pettigrew.

19 Percy Jackson 2.0

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Before you get your knickers in a twist, there is no need to panic. I will not be touching Logan Lerman’s casting as Percy Jackson himself.

It was the one shining beacon of light in an otherwise dark grotto of an adaptation.

I would be shocked if anyone else could do that role justice. But that is where my joy with those films ends. The plot was a labyrinth of poor decisions at best. I love Alexandra Daddario but I just can’t see her as my blonde haired, tan skinned, sporty, and spunky Annabeth Chase. But I think that Leven Rambin (who played Clarisse in the films) would have made a much better Annabeth. Think of her in her role of Glimmer in the original Hunger Games film. That smug smirk, powerful stance, and ability to rise to any occasion just screams Annabeth to me.

18 Looking For Alaska

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Fans across the entire world seem to all agree that Kaya Scodelario would be the best (and only) casting choice for the troubled and deeply broken character of John Green’s Looking for Alaska. In her role as Effie in the UK teen drama Skins, Kaya has already proved her ability to play broken and devastatingly troubled characters.

So Alaska should be second nature for her.

But who should play the brooding, Alaska obsessed, bookworm Miles? Many fans turned to Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg but there is no reason for those boys to claim all nerdy roles in Hollywood. No, I think that Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse would be perfect for the role. The character of Miles is essentially a less edgy and more literally loving version of this modern Jughead Jones.

17 Bioshock: Infinite

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

I don’t even know if I have an explanation for these casting choices other than their photos. I mean, just look at them. Chris Pine is the perfect Booker DeWitt. No one but Alexandra Daddario, what with her strong personality and those piercing blue eyes, could properly bring Elizabeth to life. And Donald Sutherland can naturally capture the intense power needed to embody Comstock. But each member of this trio also looks enough alike to make the games big twist/reveal believable. Each of the three actors has the same striking blue eyes and could believably bring each character to life in a big Hollywood style film. Video game movies are a bit of a hit or a miss but I think that if we all put our hands together, we might be able to make something great.

16 A Goofier Movie

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

I tried to cast Goofy himself and just could not find an actor that could possibly bring him to life. I spent the better part of a Saturday afternoon making up lists of actors. Examining past roles and interview personas in order to pick who I felt was the best pick. But I hit a dead end with Goofy, so I moved on.

And I started with Tom Holland.

His goofy personality coupled with his ability to carry himself with charisma and an effortless cool makes him the perfect fit for Max. Madelaine Petsch is the clear best choice for the ultra cool and ultra gorgeous Roxanne. It would not be that much of a stretch to imagine this crimson-haired beauty as the most popular girl at a fictional high school. And who better to play Powerline than the modern day glam pop sensation that is Bruno Mars?

15 Twilight: Remastered

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Now I am one of the few people that genuinely enjoyed the first Twilight film. No, I wasn’t one of those screaming girls who had memorized every male character’s favorite snack that camped out at the premieres. But I genuinely thought the first movie was entertaining. Though I do have to admit that even I believe that the films two main actors weren’t the best fit. I believe that Lily Collins would absolutely nail the role of Bella. From previous roles, one can see that Lily has the ability to play demure roles while still maintaining this unshakable strength which was my favorite part about Bella in the books (and which was mostly left out from the films). I chose Cara Delevingne for the role of Edward due to her casually cool personality, natural calm, and ability to project raw emotion in films made her a perfect fit.

14 The True Pocahontas

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

If Disney were to try their hands at a live-action Pocahontas remake, I would want them to change a few things. First of all, she was not a princess. Like Moana, she is the daughter of the village chief and that does not equate to a princess. Second, the story needs some serious rewriting.

And third, the remake should avoid romanticizing the struggles colonized peoples faced.

In my mind, Chris Hemsworth is the best choice for the role of John Smith. He conveys the same power and bravery that John does while still being able to tap into his kind nature. And Julia Jones would be a beautiful, strong, and determined Pocahontas. Her eyes carry such intensity and wisdom that I bet this Pocahontas would see right through John in a second.

13 Life Is Strange (But This Fancast Isn’t)

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

I scoured through forums and IMDB pages but could not find anyone who could nail all aspects of each character. Who could be soft and unfailingly kind like Max, but also possess her steely determination and fierce protective streak?

Since it is a sin in the fandom world to fancast yourself, I was struggling.

Who was punk and awesome enough to bring Chloe to life while also being able to tap into her awkward, funny, and dorky side that we see in the prequel? I found my answer. Dodie Clark; what with her hipster persona, love for all things photography related, and fierce devotion to her friends is the perfect Max. And Ally Hills not only bears a striking resemblance to the infamous Chloe Price, but her personality (as seen in her videos) is a spitting image of our favorite blue-haired punk.

12 Casting Franny And Zooey

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

If the estate of J.D. Salinger didn’t have such a tight hold on the rights of all his works, I would have expected an adaptation of one of his most favorite works rolling into cinemas due to the current revival of brooding male characters.

And nobody broods like Zooey Glass.

But even though that adaptation is eons away, that doesn’t mean that we can’t dream about it. While casting Miles Teller as the brooding, quick to anger child prodigy (and my namesake) “Zooey Glass” was a no-brainer, the casting of Franny took a bit more thought. Who could believably play a sweet girl in the midst of a mental breakdown but is still able to tear all those who dare cross her a new one? Keira Knightley. She can play soft but when she puts up a fight, worlds collide and walls turn to dust.

11 Such A Pretty Girl

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Laura Wiess’ little-known novel will always be my “be all, end all” favorite novel and casting was done in a pinch as I had had this adaptation planned out since I first blew through the novel back in 2011.

After seeing the film Winter’s Bone, I knew that I had found my Meredith.

Both characters are survivors with non-accessible mothers who do whatever they can to get through the day in one piece. No one other than the crushingly beautiful Eva Green could play the role of the mother. Her ability to turn to ice and play cruelty with ease would perfectly capture Meredith’s mother’s ability to turn a blind eye to the sad fate that befalls her daughter. And the famous Cary Elwes was the obvious choice for the villain as he perfectly executed a strikingly similar role in the film Georgia Rule.

10 Tangled, Take 2

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

While there is no shortage of charismatic, stubble-faced, swishy haired smolder masters in Hollywood that could do Eugene justice; there is only one option for the roles of Rapunzel and Gothel, respectively. Cher is the only choice for Gothel. I mean, look at her. She is Mother Gothel. I won’t accept any other casting.

There is no other option.

Nope. Sorry, case closed. As for Rapunzel, one does not need to look any further than Hollywood’s favorite doe-eyed blonde- Amanda Seyfried. Amanda is able to convey both sides of Rapunzel with ease. She can easily tap into Rapunzel’s carefree kindness and unfailing kindness but there is also a strength there. I have no doubts regarding Amanda’s ability to bring Rapunzel’s often overlooked fierce side to life.

9 Popular: 2018

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

For those of you who don’t know, Popular was a 1999-2001 show created by Ryan Murphy which existed simultaneously as a teen drama itself and a scathing yet surprisingly progressive parody of all other teen dramas.

Though this show will need a lot of rewriting in order to properly capture the ins and outs of life as a teen in the new millennium, I think that a satirical exploration of the daily drama that teens trudge through every day could be exactly what TV needs. Ryan Murphy’s favorite blonde Emma Roberts is the perfect role for the sickeningly sweet Queen B Brooke McQueen. And Maia Mitchell possesses the perfect amount of wit, sass, and anger to play the moody outsider, Sam McPherson. I, for one, would love to see how the classic high school stereotypes get updated to reflect the modern world.

8 Aloha, The Real Way

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

While I do believe that the directors give the role to the person best suited for it, one must also think about the fact that Hollywood is consistently giving the limited roles written for people of color to white actors. And if only 3 out of 10 roles are written for people of color, then why are those roles still going to white actors?

Aren’t the other seven roles enough?

I bear no ill will towards Emma Stone as she is one of my favorite actresses, but I do have to ask myself why she was cast to play the role of Allison Ng? Personally, I think the role should have gone to Orange is the New Black’s Kimiko Glenn. She has the same cute, playful, and quirky persona that Stone is known for (and which the role called for) while also being a much better fit overall.

7 Before The Storm

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Ah, Before the Storm. The beautiful, stressful, and perfectly gay adaptation of the 2015 choose your own adventure style game Life is Strange. We spent the entire first game hearing every single person in Arcadia Bay fangirling over the force of nature that is Rachel Amber. The developers of the prequel had the insane task of bringing her to life and making her live up to the hype.

Who could be so confident and full of life but also broken and afraid?

Blake Lively, of course. I mean, she essentially played the exact same character in The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants so this role should be no problem for her. Jennifer Aniston’s strong personality and look in the film We’re the Millers makes her perfect for the role of Joyce, and a short-haired Emma Watson is the perfect fit for the prissy and manicured Victoria Chase.

6 Fantastic Casts And Where To Find Them

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

The best part of watching Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with my best friend was her intense disappointment that followed the Grindelwald reveal at the end of the film. She released a small angry sound followed by an expression of irritation at seeing the actor who would play the notorious role for the rest of the series. And I have to say, that I agree with her immediate and intense disappointment. What if we cast a different actor for each film? What if Grindelwald changed appearance constantly in order to evade capture? Or, what if we just kept him as Colin Farrell? He played the character brilliantly and there was no need to recast him so early in the series (or at all).

5 America’s Brooding Bad Boy

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Though we’ve already established that there is next to no chance that J.D. Salinger’s estate will give Hollywood the rights to any of his works, I can’t help but imagine what literature’s favorite brooding, moody, know it all would look like on the big screen. And who better to bring the world’s favorite metaphor-loving boy to life than Ansel Elgort? I mean, he already delighted (and broke the hearts of) the entire world when he hit the silver screen as Augustus Waters in The Fault in Our Stars, who bears a striking resemblance to Holden Caulfield. Who else is charismatic enough to convince us (and himself) that he is exposing phonies without realizing that he himself is the biggest phony of them all?

4 Giving Us Goosebumps

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

Sure, we all loved R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, but it pales in comparison when placed up against the other books he’s written over the years. The Boyfriend is one of his more ‘mature’ novels that follows a spoiled rich girl who uses men, chews them up, and then spits them out like sunflower seeds.

And one of the men she uses ends up gone.

But even the line between this world and the next can’t keep him from getting his revenge. The girl, Joanna, is described as beautiful, thin, and perfect in pretty much every way. The most striking aspect of her appearance is her stunningly white hair, which is why I thought that Dove Cameron was a perfect choice. The boy who passed away, Dex, was described as a skater dude with a mild punk streak who is also one of the sweetest boys you could ever meet. That’s a role that only Todd and the Book of Pure Evil’s Alex House can fill.

3 Anastasia: Reborn

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

When I first watched Anastasia with my fiancé, before the first song began he let me know that, if this film were historically accurate, it would have ended by now as the entire Romanov clan was ended in the woods. If Hollywood ever decides to make a live-action remake of that ‘90s classic, I sincerely hope that they avoid historical accuracy at all costs and keep things sarcastic, light, and funny. But who could bring these childhood icons of an entire generation to life? Who could capture Anya’s bite and sass, but also her sweet and vulnerable side? Who could play a master con-artist and criminal in a way that keeps him likable in an endearing and goofy way? It is my personal belief that Emma Stone and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (respectively) would get the job done better than anyone else could.

2 The True Little Mermaid

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

There have been nearly a dozen attempts to bring The Little Mermaid to the silver screen without the use of animation since the original cartoon premiered in 1989. But every time news of these films hit the surface, they seem to fizzle out. I don’t know what the true reason behind these floundering adaptations is but maybe a change of pace… or should I say a change of face is in order? I think that the quirky and free-spirited Anna Kendrick would make a wonderful Ariel. We could age her up, expand their love story, and give her a bit more experience. The dimpled Sam Claflin would bring new life to the bland Prince Eric. And for Vanessa, we need not look any further than Liz Gillies. She can sing, she can act, and she makes you want to jump out of your own skin with a single glance.

1 Grease Has Got A Brand New Cast

20 Amazing Fancasts That Hollywood Needs To See Right Now

I know they already breathed new life into the 1978 classic when they remade it for the small screen back in 2016, but I am suggesting a bigger change than a simple recast and a live format. What I’m suggesting is to make it gay. It is 2018 (or should I say twenty gay-teen?)

I say that that is the year for a lesbian Grease film to hit theatres.

Sandy will be played by the beautiful and innocent Elle Fanning. Her delicate features and natural poise would perfectly capture Sandy’s raw innocence and would be the perfect foil to Danny’s rebellious ways. And who would be the rebellious troublemaker that turns Sandy into a leather-clad bombshell? None other than Kristen Stewart herself. Kristen shines in roles with characters with a bit of bite and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this LGBT friendly remake.

Zooey Norman is a writer, mother, and film enthusiast. This tender-hearted optimist spends her days rereading the same books she has had since childhood, loves nothing more than a good behind the scenes featurette, and never manages to finish her tea before it gets cold. Zooey’s first book, “Lavender Reverie” is now available to purchase on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
