Scooby-Doo was a kid’s first foray into mystery and horror. Those that loved the show when they were kids are now fans of shows like American Horror Story and Supernatural. No matter your age, from Nancy Drew to today’s Escape Rooms, there is nothing quite as fun as a mystery to figure out. The cartoon Scooby-Doo knew this and kept that excitement at its heart for kids.
The cartoon had memorable characters with varied personalities. Velma was the book-smart one while Daphne was more about following intuition. Fred often played the leader while Shaggy and Scooby were both there to be hilarious and afraid. These characters are so well remembered and have been around now since the 1960s. At this point, they are seen as cliché but that’s simply due to their fame and age.
Speaking of the 1960s, a ton of people have grown up with Scooby-Doo. Films and episodes are still made for kids even today! Just this year Scooby-Doo and the Gourmet Ghost came out and the series Be Cool Scooby-Doo had its last episode in March.
Fans still create fan art and redesigns of these famous characters that they grew up with. A lot of fans like to see these characters in a darker setting or drawn in different styles. So here is our list of those pictures.
23 Velma
Apparently, Velma’s character was inspired by Zelda Gilroy from the 1960’s sitcom, The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis.
In fact, the whole team was inspired by characters from that sitcom!
Velma even sounds a little like “Zelda” doesn’t it? For those that never saw The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis, it had an athletic boy with blonde hair, a pretty popular girl, a boy who says “like” and “man” a lot with a goatee, and a small smart brunette. That’s all very familiar.

22 A Realistic Redesign
“Here’s my take on the Scooby-Doo gang,” wrote the artist. “I decided to change some things from the last few drawings I did a while ago, just making it feel more up to date. Please bear in mind that this is how I wanted to interpret the different characters. There is no right or wrong. Just me having fun with concepts.”
There is little wrong you can do for the Scooby gang since they have so many incarnations. This one is especially cool.

21 Daphne Doppelganger
“Instead of a standard pin-up pose, I tried to challenge myself a bit and add some story to an otherwise shallow character (and Daphne is pretty uninteresting, really),” wrote the artist.
“I think curious reflections in the mirror and the idea of doppelgangers are super creepy, so here’s Ms. Blake in a Black Swan-eqsue situation.”
Daphne is the one who is known to be the shallowest of the gang, so the mirror and doppelganger concept suits her personality while also giving it the mystery aspect that makes the show thrive.

20 Velma Portrait
At just face-value between Velma and Daphne were two stereotypes that woman constantly struggled with. One is beautiful but not smart and the other is the opposite. However real fans saw it differently though. Both of them were beautiful and intelligent in their own way. The artist for this piece saw Velma’s beauty and translated it perfectly in this piece. The warm, soft colors and the piercing eyes amongst the freckles are amazing. Velma looks like a mystery solving goddess.
19 Scooby Apocalypse
This picture is actually from a real comic book called Scooby Apocalypse. The series is made by DC comics and started in 2016. It’s Scooby-Doo but in a post-apocalyptic world.
In the story, Scooby-Doo is a “Smart Dog” prototype who can speak to humans.
Unlike in the original series, he’s actually quite brave in these comics. Spoiler ahead: Fred might be just a hallucination that Daphne has created so that’s a huge difference from the original cartoon as well.
18 Daphne Portrait
According to many fans who watched the Scooby-Doo series at a young age, Daphne was among their first crushes. Hopefully, that’s not the case for adults since in some of her incarnations Daphne is quite young!
Despite having a black belt in karate, she serves as a damsel in distress in most episodes. That’s actually kind of infuriating. A black belt should have everything under control. She even got the nickname “Danger-prone Daphne” from other characters in the show.

17 Running Away Gang
A big joy of watching Scooby-Doo as a child was the chase scenes. There was a ton of slapstick and that is captured in this picture just for the fact that Scooby is running with a sandwich in his mouth.
A part of what made the show funny was his and Shaggy’s love for food.
Not going to explore that scary mansion? What if you get a Scooby Snack? If Shaggy will do that for a dog treat, what would he do for a turkey dinner?
16 The Damsel
The artist titled this piece, “The Perils of Daphne.” With how many times she gets taken, it’s a wonder why she doesn’t carry pepper spray, a gun, and a tracking device all at once. If not that, why doesn’t she quit? Wouldn’t you quit if you got taken almost every time you went to solve a mystery? Daphne deserves better. Maybe she should take charge instead of Fred. We can blame Fred’s “split up and search for clues” idea for all the mishaps.

15 Haunted Manor
Did you know that Scooby-Doo is also loosely based on Abbot and Castello? Executive producer, Fred Silverman, said in an interview, I had always thought that kids in a haunted house would be a big hit.
“As a kid, I would go and look at Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and movies like that.”
In the first concept, Scooby was in the background. Then to make the show less scary and more targeted towards kids, Scooby became the center of the show.

14 Scooby Ghost Busters
If you loved Scooby-Doo, chances are that you were a Ghost Busters fan as well. The artist has actually made several comic-like drawings like this one of the Scooby gang as Ghost Busters and they are trying to save Velma. Other drawings feature a brave Shaggy. They should give Scooby some cool weapon!
This cool Scooby-Doo and Ghost Buster mash-up exists elsewhere in fanfiction and fan art. The two sort of go together like peanut butter and jelly.

13 Scared Dog
Part of the humor of Scooby’s character is that he’s a Great Dane, which is one of if not the biggest dog breed. They can get to the size of a small horse.
Despite his size and ability to probably fight everything he sees, Scooby is a coward.
While it’s funny, it’s not so far from the truth of animal behavior. Small animals are known to be more fierce than the large ones. That’s how cats beat up dogs.
12 Modern Redesign
Real question: would Shaggy be brave enough to get a tattoo? The design is beautiful and its design matches his laid back personality. Maybe he had to hold Velma, Fred, or Daphne’s hand while he got the tattoo? What is the tattoo on his neck though? They appear to be words.
Velma is very updated with no bangs or turtleneck sweater. The colors might be a little too bright and happy for their show through. Got to have it stay a little spooky right?

11 A More Diverse Cast
Due to how increasingly interconnected we all are, diversity is a bigger trait of today’s cartoons. We could even say that about TV shows in general since the comparison dates back to the late 1960s. It does make the characters look more interesting and different.
Scooby looks adorable.
He looks a little less like a Great Dane though and more like a stubby Pitbull. Thought a Pitbull that’s scared of everything has more humor than a Great Dane doesn’t it? We associate Pitbulls far more with being tough than Great Danes.

10 Best Friends
Shaggy and Scooby are the heart of the show but if you think logically about their cowardice, wouldn’t they seem useless? That’s not actually true if you recall that in many of the episodes, the duo was used as bait to capture a criminal or monster.
The relationship between Shaggy and Scooby was one of the heartwarming aspects of the show. Despite being terrified, they always were loyal and stuck together. They always had each other, and that was their greatest comfort in any haunted mansion.
9 Classy Redesign
This looks like concept art for a fashion magazine doesn’t it? Velma looks like a London model on her way to her photoshoot with her spoiled guard dog. This art flips the expectations of the nerdy and introverted Velma upside down.
She looks like her gaze could freeze anyone up.
Scooby looks so serious as well. Is this an alternate universe where he’s well behaved enough to not eat everything he sees? He’s certainly rarely seen with a leash on like he’s a common dog.
8 Fred And Daphne
The original Scooby-Doo show fan base often pointed out that Fred and Daphne have romantic feelings for each other. However, it’s a little more than rumor since there are clues that they both have had crushes on each other at least. In the season of Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, the two are actually dating. In the first live-action movie, they even kiss. In other words, the relationship is canon in a couple of the shows many incarnations.

7 Fancy Scooby And Velma
How could you not trust this duo to solve a mystery? They look like they know what they are doing and more.
However, it’s a good thing that this is a picture and not some animation because can you imagine Scooby walking in those boots?
He’d be kicking around like a clown. Dogs don’t know how to walk in shoes. Don’t believe that? Look up videos and prepare you laugh.
It would be awesome to see the rest of the mystery gang in this art style.

6 Daphne Illustration
Daphne has had many romantic interests rather than just people in the main cast. She captures the gaze of a ton of minor characters in various episodes in the series. If you’re a major fan, you’ll probably recognize this list of minor character names Daphne had had romantic interest with: Warren, Buddy Chillner, Dick Van Dyke, Alex Super, Chip Hernandez Jr, Detective Beau Neville, and John Cena.
Wait, John Cena?! No joke, he was in a Scooby-Doo episode called “WrestleMania Mystery.”
5 Velma And Daphne
A ton of fans ship Velma and Daphne. In the show, the two girls are very close and have given a lot of evidence that they could end up together. This comes from many conversations the characters have had with each other such as teasing about dating and hugging each other when scared.
There is a theory that Fred always pairs himself with Daphne to split up and look for clues because he’s trying to get her away from Velma out of jealousy.
4 Cute Little Cast
This drawing style of the team is just too wholesome. From Velma’s huge glasses to Scooby’s long snout to Daphne’s tiny heels, the cute simplicity is wonderful. It’s hard to not want to give this Scooby a big smooch for being adorable.
Forget all other character designs; this is the one that deserves to be on television.
Don’t you want to see these little guys wandering around a spooky manor with those innocent beady little eyes? Imagine how cute the monster could look in this style.
