If there is one thing the internet has made crystal clear – nothing is sacred. Whether the most powerful man in the world or a beloved franchise; in some corner of the world wide web, there exists a thread, picture, or joke at their expense. There is no escaping criticism or commentary. In some ways, the digital age has leveled the playing field, providing an audience for everyone with access to Wi-Fi. On the flip side, this guarantees there is going to be more than a few pages seemingly designed to specifically annoy you.

Childhood tends to bring forth images of innocence and hope, with heroes and heroines created to inspire the next generation. Some of the most beloved characters are children, as it makes logical sense to center a cartoon around a protagonist who is the same age as the target audience. Eventually, children turn to adults and learn that life rarely plays out as envisioned by our younger selves. So, is that it? Should we just abandon our childhood memories? Well, in certain ways, fan-art is a compromise. Adults who once watched these characters on the small (or big) screen are able to gain control over their fantasies. Unsurprisingly, as we grown-u[, so do our thoughts, leading to drawings that would have required more than a parental guidance rating.

27 Mission Accepted

In the last 20 years or so, Disney Channel has struggled to match Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon’s quality of output, especially when strictly talking about their animated content. Their live-action shows are pretty much even, but Disney’s cartoons are more miss than hit. Obviously, Kim Possible falls into the latter category. Inspired by classics series like Mission: Impossible, Bob Schooley, and Mark McCorkle’s quirky action-comedy boasted a lovable cast of heroes and villains. As the title character, Kim managed to be both perfect and relatable. RickCelis is hardly the only artist to re-imagine the teenager, but this Kim knocks it out of the park. Surprisingly, her wardrobe is pretty much identical to the source material, but the spy is definitely on the curvier side.

26 Collect All The Crystals To Unlock Coco

Oh, yeah, TV is far from the only medium that introduced loveable kid characters who went on to inspire artists from a deviant community. Crash Bandicoot hit the scene in the mid-’90s, establishing Crash as a PlayStation icon and propelling Naughty Dog into superstardom. As the protagonist’s sister, Coco Bandicoot tends to play second-fiddle and only became playable in the third game. Focusing exclusively on her visual design, Coco has Crash’s number.

Crash is goofy, Coco is stylish.

BenHickling’s page is a gold-mine for Bandicoot fans, especially those interested in seeing what Crash’s younger sister might look like in the future. From the energy drink to the tank top, this Coco is far removed from Naughty Dog’s original concept. Maybe, it is time to give Coco her own game.

25 Earth-Shattering

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

How can anyone forget Toph Bei Fong? Disabled characters rarely get their moment to shine; so, it was beyond amazing to watch the blind earth-bender constantly dominating those around her. Forget The Legend of Korra’s reluctant depiction of inclusiveness, Toph was the real ground-breaking creation. The master bender is popular on Deviant Art, but Katara’s conventional beauty is easier to capture in a static picture. When it comes to Toph, some artists prefer to re-create her cooler moments, a trend that is pretty awesome. Danigunz did not quite go in that direction, instead presenting Toph as playful and almost cheeky. While she has a rough exterior, the earth-bender does have a more light-hearted side; so, this is not too far from reality.

24 Love, Light, And Everything In Between

Sailor Moon was an anime that most boys secretly loved by pretended they did not watch. The premise focuses on five school-girls, who could easily pass for college students, that are granted the power of the Solar System to fight the forces of darkness. The stories prioritized romance and comedy; but, for its time, the anime was great and earned a decent following.

The short skirts had nothing to do with it.

Sailor Venus was the last of the main five heroines to join the team, and she represents light and love. With the exception of her hair, Minako Aino’s design was reminiscent of Sailor Moon. JessiBeans did a decent job of westernizing the character, giving her a more mature appearance. There is no way this rendition of Sailor Venus is only 13-years-old.

23 The Beauty Of Science

Johnny Test launched later than most of the other cartoons included in this list, but it lasted nearly ten years on Cartoon Network. Clearly, this comedy about a teenager and his talking dog did something right. While the title character could be slightly (or very) annoying, the rest of the cast was not too bad. The previously mentioned pet generally stole the show, but Johnny’s twin sisters earned a chuckle or two. For those who never watched the cartoon, Susan and Mary do NOT look like they do in the above picture. Frankly, Johnny Test’s art was never quite that impressive. Gb2k’s deviant art page is packed with stylish recreations that imagine childhood favorites as comic-book style heroines. The twins could easily work within a Marvel or DC comic-strip.

22 A Kind Of Magic

Every millennial should recognize the name, Hermione Granger. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise was a worldwide hit that spawned a massively popular film series starring Emma Watson as the young wizard. In certain ways, the character led to the creation of two recognizable celebrities, with Watson and Hermoine herself becoming synonymous with fantasy. Nowadays, Watson has moved on to other projects, while Hermione continues to be reimagined by fan-artists across the world.

Casual Fridays.

Prince-Kristian’s Hermione is incredibly well-toned and aggressive. Over the years, it seems like Hogwarts’ dress code has greatly loosed up, allowing students to attend class with most of their body on display. At the very least, Ron’s future is looking rather bright and exciting. Good for him.

21 Teen Titans Go (To Art)

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

DC’s movies might be unpredictable, but their animated cartoons used to be consistently great. Nowadays, the studio seems to prioritize childish comedy over an engaging storyline, but Batman: The Animated Series and Teen Titans stand the test of time. Putting aside the goofy Teen Titans Go, the original series served as a prime example of how to properly adapt a comic series into a cartoon. The cast was universally brilliant, but there could only be one breakthrough star.

Raven was that character.

With a tragic backstory that puts Batman to shame, this dark heroine hid her inner pain behind a wall of sarcasm and one-liners. There can never be enough of Raven, and feitian answered the call. The costume is spot on, while the superheroine comes across as powerful but dangerous. We would rather face Cyborg in an arm-wrestling match than challenge Raven.

20 (Animated) Cosplay Is A Thing Of Beauty

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Yep, this gorgeous fighter is Naruto’s Sakura. As the old saying goes, art imitates reality; so, cosplay could very well be a thing that exists in Naruto’s universe. Obviously, this implies that Mai Shiranui and her game are part of the show. Considering Sakura is a shinobi who can accomplish great feats of strength, it is kind of redundant to cosplay as someone less powerful than herself. That is not to take anything away from SilverHand08’s drawing, as this might just be Sakura at her absolute best. In the anime, Sakura can hardly be described as elegant or mature, but the artist managed to instill these alien characteristics in their version of the ninja. Sasuke probably would have taken note of Sakura’s interest a lot quicker than he did in Naruto.

19 It Was Bound To Happen

Honestly, Mandy totally pulls off the ninja-reaper look. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy made it crystal clear that the latter held the most power out of the main group. Mandy would probably do a better job than Grim; if nothing else, she is smart enough to avoid getting trapped in a never-ending friendship with a pair of awful children. Grim, you should have known better than to mess with those two.

Mandy will always be intimidating.

In the picture’s caption, Nishi06 mentions Naruto and the similarities are hard to miss. We wonder how Mandy would have handled being in Sakura’s position. For some reason, we doubt she would have spent the majority of the show asking Naruto to save Sasuke. Considering her weapon of choice, Soul Eater might be a better pick.

18 A New Look

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Picking the best Rugrats character is soul-crushing. Like picking your favorite child, everyone knows the right answer, but their opinion should be kept a secret.

By the way, the answer is Chuckie.

Tommy’s best friend is hardly the bravest of the group. Chuckie is rather pessimistic and prefers to stay out of trouble. In real-life, this type of person is unlikely to get into some of the situations experienced by the babies; but, Chuckie has the worst luck. Despite his many worries and limitations, he is always willing to face his fears to protect the group. Chuckie is someone to be admired. MEL-Dungeon’s alternative take on the character turns the lovable but geeky Chuckie into a hipster. Okay, that is not fair, maybe his personality has remained the same. Still, we cannot imagine Chuckie rummaging through his wardrobe and picking out that shirt.

17 Oz Is In Good Hands

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a collection of short comics released by Marvel studios adapting L. Frank Baum’s novel. The series generally garnered a positive reception, especially when related to the design of Skottie Young’s characters. He managed to find a way to create an Oz that feels similar but unique. Clearly, this run of comics left an impression, since PeterLumby’s Dorothy is based on them. Unlike the original story, Lumby’s fan-art features an older Dorothy. Returning in the near-future, she discovers that Oz is going through a Western period. We are not going to lie, this version of Dorothy is stunning. The cowboy aesthetic really does suit the young adventurer. Does anyone else want to see this Dorothy star in her own version of Alice: Madness Returns?

16 All Grown Up And Ready For A Night On The Town

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Alongside Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats was the first cartoon commissioned and created by Nickelodeon. Suffice to say, the studio got off to a pretty impressive start. While the other two deserve quite a bit of praise, Rugrats was the series that established Nickelodeon as the juggernaut it is today. Lasting for nine seasons and a spin-0ff, an entire generation grew up with Tommy, Chuckie, and Angelica.

Angelica was bad. Here, she is BAD.

Angelica served as the cartoon’s main antagonist, although All Growed Up did turn the teenager into a sympathetic character. Goton15’s Angelica follows in her mother’s footsteps, going as far to wear the same dress. Honestly, the two could pass for sisters. Anyway, hopefully, Nickelodeon uses this fan-art as inspiration for the next spin-0ff.

15 Frighteningly Beautiful

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Danny Phantom handled romance maturely and effectively. Love is a part of life, therefore, most shows throw in a relationship or two even when it is not really needed. At the best of times, these sections are relegated to background fodder and the occasional banter. Avatar: The Last Airbender learned that lesson, while The Legend of Korra promptly forgot it. Danny Phantom introduced Paulina as Sam’s rival for Danny’s affection. Hailed as the most desirable student at Casper High School, Paulina is an entitled cheerleader who does not know how to take no for an answer. DLToon’s drawing reflects her arrogant personality and better-than-thou demeanor. The artist did a fantastic job of capturing the cartoon’s visual style. Seriously, this piece could pass for a screenshot from Danny Phantom.

14 Exploring Dora

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Is it just us, but, in this picture, Dora seems older than seven-years-old. Dora the Explorer follows the title character as she goes on a series of educational adventures. Accompanied by an anthropomorphic monkey named Boots, Nickelodeon’s cartoon is targeted towards younglings. The content is wholesome and safe, providing entertainment for children while teaching Spanish and mathematics.

We could all use a teacher like Dora.

Children characters allow fan-artists to really take their depiction in any desired direction. As long as Dora’s clothes and skin-tone resemble the source material, rkw0021 could pretty much do whatever he saw fit. Dora evolved from an intelligent and adventurous young girl into a (presumably) intelligent and adventurous supermodel. Also, the adult Boots is intimidating. When she gets a boyfriend, he will definitely have her back home by midnight.

13 Being Bad Never Looked So Good

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Okay, Kim is a great character and we love her to bits, but Shego was Kim Possible’s true MVP. When pulled off effectively, sarcasm can be a great comedic tool; although, it can get grating if handled poorly. Thankfully, the writers knew what they were doing when creating Shego, as the villainess never fails to be hilarious or awesome. Despite constantly losing to Kim, Shego remains a threat throughout the four seasons.

Also, green is her color.

Tsuaii takes the character in a completely different direction, picturing Drakken’s side-kick in a more realistic setting. Shego was always an attractive character, but this version is simply mesmerizing. The latex outfit deserves a fair amount of praise, with the artist showing a great attention to detail. So, time to join the dark side?

11 Cool For The Summer

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

The world’s greatest water-bender, Katara rose to the status of an animated icon during the course of three seasons on Nickelodeon. Incorporating comedy, action, and drama; Avatar: The Last Airbender gained a huge online following, spawning a live-action adaptation. A few years after the final episode, The Legend of Korra was commissioned and broadcasted by the network. Katara was the cartoon’s lead female character, although…

…Toph was the best girl.

The water-bender is easily the most popular starting point for fan-artists, with thousands of Kataras spread throughout Deviant Art. Picking one for this list proved tiring, but CD007’s take on the character captured our attention. There is just something joyful about this art piece. Due to her circumstances, Katara matured quickly; so, it is nice to see her acting like an actual teenager. Also, the Fire Nation’s attire always brought the best out of her.

10 Forget Jawbreakers…

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Ed, Edd n Eddy centered on three goofy friends who exist only to scam their classmates in order to buy jawbreakers. The show is the cartoon version of Only Fools and Horses. Spanning over a ten year period, Cartoon Network aired six seasons and a movie, making Ed, Edd n Eddy the longest running series on the network. It should go without saying, but the series played a significant role in a lot of people’s childhood. Naz was the cartoon’s popular girl next door and one of the only characters to be nice to the Eds on a regular basis. 14-bis pays homage to Naz’s friendliness by picturing her working as a waitress at the cul-de-sac’s resident cafeteria. Admittedly, in the real world, Naz’s proportions would be less than ideal. On the other hand, she would fit perfectly in Dexter’s Laboratory.

9 Nothing But Net

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Hey, remember when Warner Bros released a children movie featuring a female version of Bugs Bunny who spent most of her screen-time posing provocatively?

Deviant Art remembers.

Actually, Lola Bunny probably deserves some credit for launching a popular adult-only genre in the digital age. As a character, besides getting annoyed when referenced as a ‘doll,’ she did not really have much of a personality. Love or hate it, The Looney Tunes Show handled Lola Bunny better than Space Jam. Fans of the Bunny are well-represented within Deviant Art. Children who watched Space Jam when it was first released, have now grown into adults capable of creating their own Lola Bunny. Verona7881 shows more respect to the athlete than the original movie, and she perfectly captured the character’s confident facial expression. Sure, Lola is no Bugs Bunny, but she is the next best thing.

8 An All-Grown-Up Mascot

25 Beloved Childhood Kids Characters Taken To An Awesome New Level

Nowadays, Spongebob is the closest character Nickelodeon has to a mascot. The sponge is synonymous with the network and refuses to call it a day. Around the turn of the century, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius was starting to gain traction. For a relatively short period, the boy genius was Nickelodeon’s mascot.

There was no escaping Jimmy Neutron.

The cartoon’s time eventually ended and Jimmy was relegated to a footnote. The network might have moved on, but Jimmy has yet to be forgotten by the fanbase. The cartoon showed that being intelligent does not automatically make you an outcast, a lesson that is relatively rare in western television. As Jimmy went from boy to man, the genius part stayed intact. Anyway, that is what Jorn-Siberian seems to believe.

Mark Sammut grew up on the PlayStation 1 and has been playing games ever since, although he is no longer limited to just Sony consoles. Be it RPGs, shooters, platformers, or racing games, Mark’s area of expertise covers a wide range of genres and topics. That goes beyond video games as well, extending to mediums like anime and western cinema.
