BTs are the scariest thing you’ve never seen. Death Stranding doesn’t have many enemies in it, but the BTs are easily the most imposing, particularly because they cannot usually be seen. BTs lurk in rainy sections of the map, and when they’re nearby, you need to be ready for a lengthy stealth section.
Your suit’s radar will perk up when BTs are close, giving you ample warning, but they’re very deliberately placed where it will be difficult to efficiently pass them. Because of course they are.
If you want to pass through BT infested areas, you will need to act cautiously, and with the tips in this guide you will – hopefully – be able to get by unscathed.
Different Warning Levels
Your radar and BB will give you different warning levels for BTs. The radar will point towards them, and will glow and flash at different speeds to indicate the distance of the closest BT.
- When the radar is silently pointing towards a BT, you can walk at a normal speed
- When the radar is blinking while pointing towards a BT, you should crouch while passing to avoid being detected.
- When the radar is flashing and spinning rapidly, this indicates the BT is very close, and you should hold R1 to cover your mouth, holding your breath, allowing you to move even more silently.
Any closer than that, and the BT is pretty much guaranteed to detect you.
Slow And Steady
The best way to avoid BTs is to stick to the edges, near cliffs, where you often have fewer BTs to actually move around. Climbing is actually fairly silent, so you can feel confident to climb over a rocky outcrop if it means you don’t have to get any closer to BTs.
Just move slowly and watch the different radar levels while moving past and away from whichever BT is closest to you.
EX Grenades
Eventually Sam will gain access to EX grenades as tools – if a BT gets too close, you can throw this to distract and make the BT back away. These are very effective in moments where you’re trying to recover a piece of cargo from a dangerous area.
EX Grenades are one of those items that you won’t need until you really need it for some reason, so make sure to stock up when they’re available.
Run
Sometimes situations go bad, even when we don’t want them to. I mean, that’s a statement on life in general, but here I am specifically referring to stealth sections. You might run out of breath, fall over, walk instead of run at the wrong time – anything could happen to alert the BTs to your location, and when things go wrong: run.
There’s not much else you can do, honestly. BTs will emerge from the ground, slowing you, and attempting to drag you down. Mash Square to shake them off, grab what cargo you can, and run. You will be able to make it to a safe distance, and then if you really need the cargo, you can sneak back and attempt to grab it. If you have EX Grenades, now is the time to use them.
