25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

The Pokémon franchise became one of the most powerful pop-culture icons of the late 1990s. Pokémon Red Version and Blue Version took the entire world by storm and new games are released on an almost yearly basis, including potentially this year in what is likely going to be one of the most anticipated Pokémon titles ever in the series with the mainline Pokémon game on Nintendo Switch. In addition, the animated series was one of the best and most memorable cartoon shows of that time. Even to this day, the animated series continues with new episodes, recently surpassing the 1000 episode milestone and the featured Pokémon movies are still a yearly release. In addition, there are plenty of other merchandise like clothing, stuffed toys, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game that gives the series even further exposure.

With such a crazy popular series as Pokémon, there are fans who love to theorize what goes into Pokémon. Whether if it is the games, or the animated series, or the very nature of the creatures themselves, there are plenty of Pokémon theories that are well supported with evidence that will make you rethink what kind of thought process was going through Gamefreak’s mind when creating them. Now let’s embark on our own Pokémon journey and explore 25 popular fan theories coming from the different areas of Pokémon.

25 Role Reversal

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

This theory was devised by Reddit user: ShinyBreloom2323. Have you ever thought about how unusually different your Pokémon “rival” Hau is in Pokemon Sun and Pokémon Moon, that he didn’t seem much like a rival as compared to previous games? Well, there might be a reason to that. You see, Hau and yourself actually represent a standard rival role that is seen over time in the Pokémon games.

The difference in Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon is that you play the role of the rival, and Hau plays the role of the standard new Pokémon trainer, similar to Pokemon Red and Pokémon Blue.

There are a few subtle hints that would support this theory in making perfect sense. First off, you are always ahead of Hau. In the many times you encounter him, he always talks about how he needs to catch up to you. Second, one of Hau’s first two Pokémon is a Pikachu, the other being a starter Pokémon that is actually weak to your starter choice. This would be the first time you have a starter Pokémon that has the type advantage over your rival’s starter. Third, you become champion before Hau, when Hau finally completes all of the island trials and defeats the Kahunas as well as the Elite Four, it is you, his rival that he has to best in order to become champion.

24 Team Rocket’s Plan To Catch Mewtwo

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Pokémon fans have argued that the head of Team Rocket, Giovanni, had a plan in place if Mewtwo were to become an enemy. According to fans, Team Rocket’s goal in stealing the Silph Scope was for the purpose of hunting for ghost type Pokémon. Ghost-type Pokémon generally have the type advantage over Psychic-type Pokémon, which is what Mewtwo is obviously. It was believed that battling Mewtwo with ghost type Pokémon was one of Team Rocket’s plans, however, it failed. It likely wouldn’t have worked anyway considering how weak ghost type Pokémon are in the original generation. There were only 3 of them (Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar) and all of them were also poison types, who are weak to psychic types.

After the plan fell through, Giovanni then developed the Master Ball, capable of catching Pokémon without fail, but ended up keeping it for himself. Of course, speaking specifically from the games’ perspective, the protagonist would get in the way of that idea. Fans have speculated that Giovanni was trying to do this to save the world from Mewtwo, insinuating that he isn’t an evil villain, but nothing in Pokémon video game lore suggested that Mewtwo would have destroyed the world on its own will.

23 What Ever Happened To Blue’s Raticate?

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

If you remember early on in your Pokémon adventure, your rival, Blue (or Gary or whoever you called him), had a Raticate in his party. He used that Raticate in a battle against you on the S.S. Anne. However, after you defeat him, the next time you will see him is when he is apparently grieving for a lost Pokémon at the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town. He then asks you if you have ever experienced losing a Pokémon like that and if you know how it feels.

Theories suggest that Blue’s Raticate didn’t survive at some point and He is mourning the loss of one of his Pokémon.

This theory is largely supported by the fact that Raticate was not in his party at all after the battle on the S.S. Anne. It is further speculated that the said Raticate did not survive the battle between you and your rival. This would make it appear that you are the cause for Raticate’s passing. It is a good theory if you are the dark thinking type, but let’s be real, not many trainers are going to aim to be one of the best trainers ever with a Raticate in their party, nor would Blue serve as a challenging final battle if he kept it in his team through the end.

22 Mew Is Literally Average

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

According to Reddit user Dinomaparty, there could be a meaning based off of the possible origin of Mew’s name. The Greek symbol for the average (or mean) value is Mμ, also similar in pronunciation. Mμ is often used for population statistics. Since the meaning of average is the total of all values divided by the number of values, you could say it is similar to what Pokédex entries say about Mew, which is that Mew contains the DNA of all Pokémon.

In addition, in Pokémon games, Mew’s base stat is 600, with each stat (HP, attack, defense, special attack, special defense, and speed) equaling exactly 100 each. In competitive battles, 100 is roughly an average, maybe slightly above average number to have for your stat. This makes Mew a Pokémon you could mold in just about any way you want, but it isn’t super impressive at doing anything, like a 3-star athlete that plays three sports versus a 5-star athlete that plays only one. Thus, in the competitive battling scene, Mew is a rather average Pokémon statistically. This comparison makes a lot of sense considering that Mew contains the DNA (average value) of all Pokémon (total value).

Therefore, Mew is actually Mμ. Now class, make sure to remember this lesson, it could pop up later.

21 Mr. Fuji Is At Least Partially Responsible For Mewtwo

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Mr. Fuji seems like a really nice, peaceful, laid back kind of guy. He loves Pokémon, always going above and beyond to care for them, he even stands up to Team Rocket when they threaten the safety of Pokémon. Mr. Fuji is also very knowledgeable of Pokémon and what they like. For example, after being rescued from Team Rocket, he gives Red a Poké Flute. That gift features a soothing melody that could even wake up a sleeping Snorlax.

However, there is a secret about him that reveals quite a lot about his history, leading to theories of his past life.

Before the days of taking care of orphaned Pokémon, Mr. Fuji used to be a scientist on Cinnabar Island, specifically, he is the founder of the Pokémon Lab, also known as the Pokémon Mansion. When you explore the mansion, you will see documentaries that details the discovery of Mew and the eventual experiment to create Mewtwo. These documents imply that Mr. Fuji himself was among the scientists who created Mewtwo. It is possible that the nature of the cloning experiments is what caused Mr. Fuji to value life a bit more, thus leading him to the path of taking care of Pokémon.

20 Genesect Is A Cyborg Of Kabutops

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Genesect is a mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. It is a Pokémon that was created and modified by Team Plasma, a similar backstory as Team Rocket and Mewtwo. The Pokédex entry for Genesect suggested that the Pokémon that Genesect was based on was about 300 million years old before Team Plasma revived and modified it. Which Pokémon existed 300 million years ago?

According to the Pokédex entry for Kabuto, it was a Pokémon that typically lives on beaches roughly 300 million years ago. Coincidence? I think not. With that being said, Genesect doesn’t look much like a Kabuto. Instead, it is Kabuto’s evolution, Kabutops, that bears the striking resemblance to Genesect. On first impressions, Kabutops certainly has a similar shape as Genesect, but there are a few differences here and there, such as Kabutops’ head and arm scythes as well as Genesect’s cannon that rests on it’s back. These differences are likely due to the genetic modifications Team Plasma wanted for this Pokémon. Specifically, they really wanted Genesect to have the cannon on it’s back that can change the typing of its signature move, Techno Blast. No one knows why Team Plasma based Genesect off of Kabutops, but it certainly is an interesting choice.

19 TMs and HMs Probably Work A Lot Simpler Than You Might Think

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

TMs (Technical Machines) and HMs (Hidden Machines) are very important items for trainers on their journey. They allow Pokémon to learn moves that they typically can’t learn on their own, but even they have a theory surrounding them. At first, we weren’t sure what they have looked like, but in Pokémon Fire Red and Pokémon Leaf Green, they make a visual appearance as DVD disks. Have you ever thought about why TMs and HMs are shaped like disks, or better yet, how does a Pokémon learn a move from a disk? They have been around since the very beginning of the series, yet, it isn’t ever shown just how it works. You only hear about TMs in the video games, they are very rarely seen in the animated series, if at all.

Fan theories suggest that these disks can be inserted into a mobile technology, likely the Pokédex, and what these disks include is a visual representation of what the move looks like. Just show it to your Pokémon and they somehow learn the move through a visual example on screen. If only teaching real-life pets crazy tricks could be that simple. I wonder how that would work in today’s day and age with the internet and Youtube the way it is.

18 Was Venonat Originally Supposed To Evolve Into Butterfree?

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

As with a lot of video games back in the day, there usually were a few cuts or last-minute adjustments that were a bit different than the original project plan. In Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, one of the theorized changes was that Butterfree originally was supposed to be the evolution of Venonat, not Metapod. Conversely, Venonat’s actual evolution, Venomoth, might have been the original evolution of Metapod. As you can tell in the photo above, there are some major similarities between Venonat and Butterfree, with both sharing a lot of similar characteristics. The red eyes, small fangs, and the antennas all are rather similar to each other.

It is unsure as to why the changes were made, perhaps it was a simple human error that is the cause of it. Similar to how Street Fighter’s Vega, Balrog, and M. Bison all had their names switched due to a localization error. One possibility I think could be the case is that Butterfree looks like a more cheerful and happy Pokémon. It would fit a lot better as an early obtainable Pokémon compared to the slightly intimidating look of Venomoth. Another note is that Butterfree also learns similar moves to Venomoth, so there certainly is a case that supports this theory in being true.

17 Ditto Is A Failed Mew Clone

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

The last couple theories lead well into this one. It would be reasonable to imagine that cloning isn’t something you could perfectly accomplish on your first try. Like many experiments, there is a bit of failure that comes from it. The results of the failures likely resulted in the creation of Ditto, a Pokémon that can transform into any other Pokémon. The only other Pokémon that is capable of such a feat is Mew itself. Remember our lesson about Mew and its equal base stats? Well, Ditto is exactly the same as Mew, but instead of the Mμ equaling 100, Ditto’s Mμ base stat across all stats is a measly 48 (total is 288). Furthermore, it is also gender-less like Mew.

A very interesting fact is where you could catch a Ditto in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Dittos, albeit pretty rare, are only found in the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Mansion, the same place where Dr. Fuji presumably conducted the research in attempting to clone Mew.

Therefore, with all of the facts in place, you can reach the conclusion that Ditto is, in fact, the result of failed experiments in cloning Mew.

Perhaps it is the creation of Ditto that steered Mr. Fuji away from the experiments?

16 Ash Isn’t Pikachu’s First Trainer

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

When Ash oversleeps the morning of the start of his Pokémon journey and receives Pikachu from Professor Oak, you’ll notice right away that Pikachu is very unfriendly with Ash. Why could that be? Could Pikachu generally dislike humans? Probably not as it overcame that supposed hatred pretty early. What is important to remember is that Pikachu did come out of a pokéball when Professor Oak gave it to Ash, meaning it wasn’t a wild Pikachu, either Oak himself caught it or it could have been owned by someone else.

Reddit user Oufour has come up with a decent theory that could explain how Pikachu had a previous owner. There was a lightning bolt symbol on the pokéball Pikachu came out of. It could be that the symbol is actually a seal, an accessory trainers from Sinnoh used to decorate their pokéballs. This suggests that the trainer is either from or traveled to Sinnoh at some point.

It is also possible that this trainer was a Pokémon breeder. Professor Oak would be wise to have an electric type Pokémon in case of a power outage, but he couldn’t just go outside and catch one, he needed one that would have been properly trained for the task. A Pichu wouldn’t work because it hurts itself whenever it uses electricity so the breeder had to love and care for it in order to become a Pikachu since Pichu evolves through happiness. When Pikachu eventually was given to Ash, it would be understandable for it to have that early reaction to him if Pikachu loved being with the breeder or Professor Oak.

15 Ash Was In A Coma And Everything Is Just A Dream?

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

The Pokémon animated series has been running for a very long time. It is one of the longest-running animated television shows in history. Yet, one of the more perplexing facts of the series is how Ash is always documented as a 10-year-old boy. This fact is contradicted many times in the series, including a time where he returned to Viridian City to earn his 8th gym badge and Misty says it’s been an entire year since the last time they were there. But every time a new saga begins and Ash travels to a new destination, they find a way to mention that he is still 10-years-old.

There are over 1000 episodes today, and I doubt all of that has occurred within one year.

The popular theory is that Ash is in a terrible coma where he won’t wake up and everything in the animated series is just a dream. Fans theorize that he could be in this position because of a terrible accident, perhaps at the start of his Pokémon journey when he protected Pikachu from the Spearow. I honestly think it’s just the directors keeping him at 10-years-old so he can continue to be the iconic Pokémon trainer for the newer generations of Pokémon fans.

14 N Is Actually A Pokemon!

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

N is one of the most interesting characters you’ll ever encounter in the Pokémon series. N was the leader of Team Plasma in Pokémon Black and Pokemon White. Their goal was to free Pokémon from human control, oddly enough by controlling Pokémon to help achieve their ambition. N is a unique character as he can actually communicate with Pokémon and understand what they are saying, a talent that no ordinary human should be able to pick up right away if at all.

Coincidentally enough, some of the times you encounter N is followed by a brief run-in with a Zoroark.

Zoroark is a Pokémon that has the ability to mimic any living thing. It doesn’t transform like Ditto, which is why it doesn’t copy the moves of an imitated Pokémon, but it can transform into humans as well, thus leading to the theory that N is actually a Zoroark that is imitating a human. Zoroark is also one of the 5th generation’s main mascots, even having a starring role as the main Pokémon featured in a movie, the only non-legendary Pokémon to do so. It is possible that N is a Zoroark, if that were true then Zoroark would have to have a real N to copy from and N has been documented to have the ability to communicate since he was a child. Additionally, it shouldn’t be able to speak like a normal human, maybe telepathy if anything, but not physical speech.

13 Mt. Moon Is Out Of This World!

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Mt. Moon is one of the earliest locations you visit on your Pokémon journey in Kanto, stationed right between Pewter City and Cerulean City. It seemed like a simple mountain where you could capture the very rare Clefairy as well as obtain the rare moonstones, but there could be a lot more history behind the cave.

Theories suggest that Mt. Moon was a meteor that crashed landed in that region a very long time ago.

This would explain the fact that there are fossils that can be collected there. Additionally, in Pokémon Heartgold and Pokémon Soulsilver, you can find the meteorites needed to change the form of Deoxys, a legendary Pokémon from outer space, in route 3 which is right next to Mt. Moon. Speaking of Deoxys, there was a two-part Pokémon Ranger episode series during the Advanced Generation season where Ash and company are heading to Pewter City and they experience an electrical disturbance that was caused by Deoxys. It would be revealed later that Deoxys crash-landed in that area on a meteor from outer space, although it is unclear if this was a recent event or if it was a part of Mt. Moon’s theorized impact.

12 Silent Character Trope Or Actually A Mute Character?

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

The Pokémon trainer you play as in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, going by the default name “Red” never said anything at all in your adventure. Other than the occasional yes or no, which was answered by the player itself, Red appears to be apart of the long list of main characters in gaming that are either mute or simply never talk; They were meant to be a dummy character to allow the player to have their own character and personality. Some fans believed he had his own personality but for the interest of the player’s experience was chosen to not talk, others believe he could be legitimately mute, or the strong silent type.

It turns out that Red just might be mute after all!

In many of the games that he has appeared in after the original Pokémon games, he would never say anything. In games like Pokémon Gold, Silver, Heartgold, Soulsilver, Pokémon Stadium 2, and Pokémon Sun and Moon, all Red would say before you battle him would be “…” Always three periods with the occasional “!” at the end. In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, Blue would comment that Red is “as silent as ever” meaning that it was intended for him to never say a word.

11 A Classic Pokémon That Was Supposed To Be Legendary

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Notice how amazingly strong Arcanine looks, how it’s mane is so perfectly designed, it’s fur showing age, strength, and wisdom, the stripes on its body well-earned. Arcanine is one of the coolest looking Pokémon among the original generation. It is also a pretty strong Pokémon, one that could hold its own weight very well in battle with the right moveset. Ever wondered that maybe Arcanine was not just your average Pokémon? Well, it turns out that Arcanine might have originally intended on being a legendary Pokémon.

Not only does the look and feel of Arcanine support this, but the Pokédex also gives strong evidence of this as well. The Pokédex entry classifies Arcanine as a “Legendary” Pokémon. It is unsure if Arcanine was supposed to relate to the birds in some way, or perhaps was even replaced by Moltres, but whatever the reason Arcanine did appear to be a legendary in some prototype phase of the games. This does bring up the question if the legendary birds were supposed to be birds in the first place, maybe Raikou, Entei (what Arcanine would have been), and Suicune were supposed to be the original legendary trio. Oddly fitting considering the main legendary Pokémon of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver were flying types just like the bird trio.

10 Bulbasaur’s Relationship With Oddish

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Back into the classroom, we go. This time we will be covering the concept of symbiosis. Symbiosis is the “interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.” It is a mutually beneficial relationship between two parties. In the world of Pokémon, it is theorized by many that there is a symbiotic relationship between the Bulbasaur family and the Oddish family among other Pokémon like Slowpoke and Shellder.

This relationship involves the bulb on Bulbasaur’s back supposedly being an Oddish.

No one is sure why it is like that, perhaps there are nutrients that Oddish gain from Bulbasaur and likewise. It is also worth pointing out that the evolutions of both Pokémon family are connected respectfully. Gloom being on Ivysaur’s back, and Vileplume appearing on Venusaur’s back, albeit they both look slightly different. Perhaps that appearance changes with evolution. One also has to wonder what becomes of the Oddish when Bulbasaur evolves? It may turn out that the Oddish actually fuses with Bulbasaur during evolution, forming one dominant species. As alluded to earlier, there are many more examples of a symbiotic relationship between Pokémon species. It is pretty crazy that the Pokémon world could involve so many of these kinds of relationships between Pokémon.

9 Parasect Is Controlled By A Parasite

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

We talked about symbiotic relationships, but this right here is better off described as creepy more than a mutually beneficial relationship. The Pokémon Paras has two small mushrooms growing on it’s back. It actually looks rather cute for a bug type Pokémon. However, when Paras evolves, the two small mushrooms turn into one giant mushroom and it looks rather ugly compared to its pre-evolved form. It turns out that the giant mushroom is the parasite that has infected the Paras, thus becoming a Parasect.

That’s right, the mushroom itself is what is controlling the Pokémon’s body.

Though the mushroom doesn’t seem to do crazy things to the insect, like how a host-parasite does to insects in real life, it just uses the Paras as a host for it to live in a way it sees fit. What is even creepier is realizing that this probably happens with breeding too. Where a Parasect’s offspring is also infected, causing the parasitic mushrooms to be on the Paras’ back and eventually take control when evolution occurs. Just imagine if Parasect was food for a larger species, it could possibly infect that species too and lead it as prey for another species. Very creepy stuff indeed.

8 What Exactly Is Wobbuffet?

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

Wobbuffet is such a weird Pokémon. Even for Team Rocket standards, it just comes off as extra bizarre. It seems like Wobbuffet is nothing more than a comic relief character, early on there would be a few episodes where Jessie’s Wobbuffet actually holds it’s own in battle until some silly occurrence defeated it, but even though it has been a mainstay in the animated series, just behind Meowth and Pikachu as the most often reoccurring Pokémon, it doesn’t ever find itself in battle anymore. The main mystery about Wobbuffet is what is up with its unusual black tail? The tail appears to have eyes, unlike the look of what we all assume are Wobbuffet’s eyes on its body.

It is quite possible that the eyes themselves are the real eyes of Wobbuffet.

As for what are the markings on the blue body? Hard to say, maybe whiskers for all we could guess. The black tail itself could be the eyes and even the mind of Wobbuffet. It does make some sense in that Wobbuffet’s body can certainly take quite a beating, it has one of the largest base HP stats in Pokémon. Also, it is noted in Pokédex entries that it doesn’t take kindly if it’s tail is attacked, also serving as the source of it’s destiny bond move.

7 What Happens When A Haunter Possesses A Pokéball?

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

In just about every main Pokémon game, on-screen collectible items come in the visual form of pokéballs. Many of the items actually aren’t pokéballs but other types of items like escape ropes. Sometimes, however, when you check a pokéball, it actually attacks. That is the work of Voltorb fooling the player into a battle. Have you ever wondered why Voltorb looks like a standard pokéball? Did Voltorbs even exist before the creation of pokéballs? Or maybe it was the other way around?

One theory is that a Voltorb is actually a Haunter that possessed a pokéball.

One possible explanation for this is the physical feature of the eyes on both Pokémon. They look exactly the same! Theories suggest that when a Haunter possesses a pokéball, there could be some kind of electrical interference that prevents a Haunter from ever leaving, trapping it forever. Voltorb’s use of electricity is consistent with the technological nature of what pokéballs are. The constant use of self-destructs could be what happens when the Haunter is trying to escape. However, one is left to wonder what becomes of the Haunter as it evolves into Electrode, perhaps it got used to being an exploding pokéball and actually enjoys it.

6 The Son Of Team Rocket Boss Giovanni

25 Incredible Pokémon Fan Theories (We Cant Believe Are True)

This was something I had covered in a previous article I wrote involving weird facts about Team Rocket. Your rival from Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver is actually the son of Team Rocket Leader Giovanni. However, the theory itself didn’t begin during those games as there was no major hint towards this fact. Instead, you rival constantly mentioned how he disliked Team Rocket so it didn’t seem likely at the time.

The first trace of this theory started in Pokémon Fire Red and Pokémon Leaf Green where someone in Team Rocket mistook the playable male trainer as “Giovanni’s kid” but then corrected himself saying his kid has red hair. In Pokémon Heartgold and Pokémon Soulsilver, there will be a special side quest involving Celebi where it takes you through time to the events shortly after the Kanto Pokémon games, revealing that your rival is the son of Giovanni. This was also confirmed in a Pokémon Generations episode titled “The Legacy.” Givoanni’s departure after being defeated by a kid – by Pokémon Trainer Red – and the remnants of Team Rocket pursuing Giovanni’s return must have been the reason why your rival has animosity towards Team Rocket.
