As part of Comic-Con @ Home, 2K Games has uploaded a new 14-minute trailer for Mafia: Definitive Edition today. A remake of the 2002 classic, this updated take on the mafioso story looks suitably modern, for better or worse. Developer Hangar 13 has taken lessons it learned from the development of Mafia 3 and applied them to this reimagining of the game that started the series.

The trailer not only gives us a look at how cutscenes have been reworked but shows us some typical triple-A style shootouts. It’s really not the best trailer around, but it does give us an idea of how everything will play. There will be options for those that want to experience simply the story and others that want something more traditional or challenging. That’s a nice touch and could help assuage fears that Mafia has been too modernized.

Still, I’m not exactly sold on the shooting mechanics. The real joy of the original was that gunfights were so intense because the main character Tommy Angelo wasn’t a trained professional. You had to commit to a spot and fire off rounds while hoping that you wouldn’t get blindsided. With a full cover system, this comes off like Uncharted in the 1930s.

At least from a visual perspective, Mafia Definitive Edition looks solid enough. The environments look suitably dreary and the updated lighting adds some depth and presence to the character models. I get the feeling visuals were the prime reason for this remake, so Hangar 13 nailed that aspect.

What concerns me a little is that generic open-world collectibles are being added to the game. They seem easy enough to ignore, so I hope this remake won’t put too much emphasis on menial side tasks. We’ve had enough games trying to one-up Grand Theft Auto over the years and it would be sad to see Mafia turned into a clone of that. It originally occupied a space distinct from Rockstar’s version of a crime drama.

With only a few months left to go, 2K needs to show off a less directed trailer so we can have more reasonable expectations. From this alone, I’m not convinced it will be worth digging into.
