Elden Ring is undoubtedly a great game, but there are a few things that could be improved to make it an excellent one.

Elden Ring’s release has been a massive success, both critically and financially. That said, there are things in Elden Ring that make absolutely no sense. These nonsensical things vary from large-scale issues to dumb oversights to nitpicky details. Don’t get us wrong, there’s a lot to love about Elden Ring, but even the best games still have problems.

Elden Ring is a very ambitious project for FromSoftware. It is their first open-world game, and therefore it has the added challenge of taking their Souls formula and expanding it to a looser format. With all of that said, here are some things that absolutely could have been improved in Elden Ring.

5 A Noticeable Lack Of Black Hairstyles

The lack of hairstyles for people of color in video games is much bigger than Elden Ring itself. The main issue here is that character creator menus in games often neglect black hairstyles, or when they do put in some effort the choices are limited and frankly uninspired. Unfortunately, Elden Ring seemingly made zero effort to add hairstyles that accurately represent black hair.

Quite literally, there is not a single realistic hair option for black characters in Elden Ring. Of course, they could always add these in through DLC or a patch, but the fact that Elden Ring launched without these options is disappointing, to say the least.

4 The Lack Of Accessibility Options

It might seem like accessibility options might break the difficulty curve in a souls game, but that is not entirely true. Plenty of people want to enjoy Elden Ring but either physically can’t or feel intimidated by the lack of information the game gives you.

In terms of physical accessibility, there are no options at the start of the game that help people with impaired vision or have difficulty with various inputs. Seeing how successful the game has been, it’s likely that many more people want to play Elden Ring, but cannot due to the lack of accessibility features.

Elden Ring is a very intimidating game to get into, and it requires a lot of prior hand knowledge to get through the game. If you are a newb to souls games, you will need to look up a lot of information the game does not tell you. Moreover, the game’s tutorial is far too easy to miss, and if you do miss it, then you are in for a long learning curve. Fortunately, you can go back to the tutorial area if you miss it, but that’s only if you’ve even figured out that it exists.

3 Item Crafting Is Missable If You Don’t Know Where To Buy It

Again, some elements in Elden Ring are obtuse for seemingly no reason. Item crafting is one of these obtuse elements. You can only craft if you talk to the merchant in the Church of Elleh and purchase the Crafting Kit. Now, there’s a good chance that you will end up talking to this merchant, but you might not know that they are the only merchant that sells the crafting kit. Crafting is a major feature in the game, and the game made it missable.

Sure, games should challenge you, but how is needlessly hiding the crafting component of the game challenging? This detail is an annoying step you have to take to do one of the simplest things in the game. Elden Ring does have a good learning curve overall, you can learn a lot in just a few hours, but even die-hard fans have to admit that unlocking crafting is far from intuitive.

2 The Whetstone Knife Is In An Equally Ridiculous Location

The Whetstone Knife is an essential item in the game, but it is hidden in a hard-to-spot cellar in the Gate Front Ruins. The Whetstone Knife will let you apply Ashes of War to your weapons. Ashes of War let you switch around the affinities and abilities of your weapons.

These upgrades will greatly increase your abilities and damage. The fact that this item is hidden is annoying. Now it is not as egregious as how you unlock crafting, but it’s not FromSoftware’s most brilliant gameplay decision.

1 The Performance On PC And Consoles Is Lackluster

Elden Ring has seen some noticeable performance problems on every platform. While these can be patched, it has brought out some conversations about Elden Ring’s performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Neither console has a stable 60 FPS mode, and instead, the next-gen versions of the game fluctuate hard around 50 FPS. If you want a stable version of the game (PlayStation only), you need to download the last-gen version of the game on your PS5.

Oddly, they couldn’t optimize the game to keep it at a more stable frame rate. FromSoftware possibly needs to cut down the resolution. Or maybe there is something more subtle going on. Who knows what is causing the game to run this erratically, but hopefully, a patch can fix this issue. The strangest bit about all of this news (but perhaps not surprising) is that these issues are plaguing the PC version too.

The best solution is to invest in a display with VRR. That way, your monitor can compensate for the frame-rate drops. Unfortunately, this does not work for PlayStation players because Sony has no support for this feature yet. Instead, PS5 players will need to install the PS4 version on their PS5.
