Poison-type Pokémon are known to be dangerous weapons in battle. This is demonstrated by the fact that, alongside Dark-types, they are the most commonly-used Pokémon by villainous organizations in both the anime and the games.

However, some of these Pokémon are just associated with the type because of the poisonous traits they possess, and not necessarily because of any ill or malicious intent. That being said, whether they can help it or not, some Poison-type Pokémon are more dangerous to be around than others.

10 DEADLY: Weezing Is Always On The Verge Of Releasing Poisonous Gas

Not only does Weezing have the symbol of Poison on it, but it is also constantly mixing and emitting poisonous gases. While this can be used as an effective weapon in battle, any trainer would arguably feel a bit uneasy standing near Weezing due to its toxic and somewhat unpredictable nature.

That being said, James of Team Rocket still managed to grow attached to his Weezing in the anime and didn’t seem to be permanently affected by its poison or anything.

9 SAFE: The Zubat-Line Is Fine To Be Around Unless Provoked

The Zubat-line, including Golbat and Crobat, has long been associated with villainous trainers and frustrating cave encounters in the games. When in battle, they can cause immense harm to almost any Pokémon, but they aren’t necessarily dangerous to be around outside of battle.

The fact that Brock owned and cared for one says a lot, with him being an aspiring Pokémon Breeder with a love for all Pokémon. The extent of Crobat’s Poison-type capabilities is normally focused in battle or when pursuing prey. There are so many Poison Pokémon far more dangerous than the Zubat-line.

8 DEADLY: Vileplume Emits Toxic Pollen When Moving

Vileplume may look adorable and harmless enough but as one of the original Poison-types of the franchise, it can be dangerous to be near one. Some of Vileplume’s Pokédex entries across the games elude to it releasing toxic pollen simply by taking steps and walking, with it apparently causing violent allergic reactions on occasion.

In battle, however, Vileplume can use this to its advantage with devastating status moves, dangerous Poison-type offense, and an ability called Effect Spore which can inflict status conditions on contact.

7 SAFE: Bellsprout Has Control Over Its Corrosive Acid

No Poison-type Pokémon is completely safe to be around, but there are plenty that can control it outside of battle or with trainers they have a certain level of trust in.

Bellsprout is capable of spitting corrosive acid from its mouth, but it normally uses its thin body and great evasiveness to dodge attacks before it considers opting for the acidic approach. The final evolution of the Bellsprout-line, Victreebel, isn’t exactly the safest Poison-type to be around but its traps and poison are usually used in battle or with prey, rather than humans. James’s Victreebel would often show affection toward Team Rocket without any harm, even if it wasn’t always appreciated.

6 DEADLY: Nihilego’s Controlling Neurotoxins Are Genuinely Terrifying

Nihilego’s appearances in the Sun & Moon anime are evidence enough of how deadly this Ultra Beast can be. Nihilego is essentially a parasitic organism that is capable of latching onto its prey’s head and injecting it with a neurotoxin, altering the victim’s mental capacity to a point where Nihilego can take control.

Its form of an ominous toxic space jellyfish is not to be underestimated, and any trainer would be wise to keep their distance. Lillie and Lusamine would agree after their ordeals in the anime.

5 SAFE: Poipole Is Mischievous But Also Playful & Full Of Joy

Although Poipole evolves into Naganadel, a formidable Poison/Dragon threat Poipole itself appears to be more mischievous and adventurous. In the Sun & Moon series of the anime, the Poipole that joins Ash and his team is bursting with energy and enthusiasm, seemingly loving to play with Pikachu and the others.

Poipole has a glowing, adhesive poison stored within its rather large head, firing it with its pointed needles. While squirting this poison fits its mischievous side, it never acts like this out of battle, with its kind and playful nature shining brighter than any malice or toxicity.

4 DEADLY: Garbodor Is A Walking Pile Of Garbage & Poison

Garbodor’s design and general aesthetic of being a pile of leaking garbage would be enough to cause most trainers to run in the opposite direction rather than travel alongside one. Garbodor can spray poisonous gas and filth from the fingertips of its right hand, with it being especially dangerous if anything comes into direct contact with the virulent toxic liquid.

Garbodor can also spew its various foul-smelling poisons from its mouth, and it doesn’t always have complete control. While this can make for a threatening and strong member of the team, it isn’t possible to be around one consistently and on a regular basis.

3 SAFE: Kakuna Is Somewhat Subdued Before Evolving Into Beedrill

While Kakuna has the capabilities of fighting back if attacked by extending its poison barbs, it is arguably one of the safest Poison-type Pokémon to be around. This is due to it staying immobile and waiting patiently for the next phase of its evolution in becoming a Beedrill.

Beedrill themselves are often seen chasing humans in the Pokémon anime in swarms, and everyone is well aware of how dangerous they can be with their drills and poison. Meanwhile, as a Kakuna, they cannot act as malicious.

2 DEADLY: Muk Might Be Friendly, But It Can Also Leave Behind Toxic Destruction

Ash’s Muk appears to be a big, affectionate, lovable blob in the anime, with Ash and Professor Oak constantly being hugged by it. However, if Pokédex entries and other descriptions of the sludge Pokémon are anything to go by, these Pokémon enthusiasts are putting themselves at risk every time they come into contact with the Poison-type.

Muk is referred to as a walking biohazard, with it always leaking toxins and leaving poisonous footprints, often killing any nearby plants immediately on contact. As one would suspect, Muk likes to consume garbage, so contact with it is normally ill-advised as it may cause illness.

1 SAFE: Bulbasaur Is A Poison-Type That Doesn’t Really Show Any Poisonous Signs

From the bulb of Bulbasaur to the fully bloomed flower of Venusaur, the Bulbasaur-line is fully capable of using dangerous status moves that justify its Grass/Poison typing. However, the bulb and eventual flower don’t constantly emit any poison, unlike Vileplume’s.

Ash’s Bulbasaur is one of his most loyal and iconic party members in the first few seasons of the anime and focuses more on its Grass-type capabilities. Its determination, ability to protect, and friendly nature all make it a valuable companion and arguably the safest Poison-type Pokémon to be around.
