Geralt of Rivia is a horseman, more so possibly than any Witcher before him. And while Roach is not one horse, rather a series of trusty steeds, Geralt and his horse develop a fast bond every time. The relationship the Witcher builds with his mount is a humorous one and it’s due in large part to Roach. Therefore the horse cast as Roach must bring its own personality to the screen.

5. Maximus

This Andalusian-Percheron cross is bred of actor genes and is quite the character indeed. Maximus was sired by the famed-Novelisto D who starred in Winter’s Tale, with Collin Farrell & Russell Crowe. With a dad who carts such famous rumps around for a living, Maximus is destined for the spotlight and he knows it. The young horse has been prepped for the formalities of the audition process, being taught how to shake hands and bow. Maximus’s trainers say he showed his star-worthy qualities right out of the gates.

4. Secretariat

While he surely would’ve placed higher on this list had he still been alive, Secretariat is the perfect embodiment of Roach in both spirit and appearance. The Chestnut stallion was of a generally quiet but extremely calculated nature, oddly reminiscent of a certain tight-lipped Witcher. Secretariat made racing history in his short-lived career before he was forcefully retired due to his unmatched skills. His most famous race took place back in 1973 where precise maneuvers made to conquer the track proved him a most worthy companion for Geralt. This steadfast mount was born about forty years too soon, but had he been around today, Secretariat would’ve stolen the show.

3. Black Caviar

This undefeated Thoroughbred is a perfect match for the Witcher. With twenty-five consecutive victories under her saddle girth, Black Caviar has an undeniable spirit. Geralt typically prefers the company of mares and seeing as Witchers only retire when they slow and get killed, this unmatched racing mare would’ve made a great metaphor.

2. Kenny

Kenny is the Horse of a Dúnedain Ranger. A true professional, belonging to Danish actor Viggo Mortensen and loyally carrying him across middle earth through the better part of Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers. Kenny is not to be mistaken with Uraeus, the horse Viggo personally taught to lie down for a stunt as Brego later in the movie. That horse unfortunately passed in 2015. However, there are no reports of Kenny kicking the bucket just yet. After carting a long-lived ranger across Middle Earth, this trusty steed might be up for one last adventure just like old Bilbo.

1. Hector

Okay, so Hector doesn’t meet the breed, color, or gender standards most expect from Roach. But that doesn’t stop him from being the Witcher’s runner up. Though Hector didn’t make the cut as the Witcher’s on-screen mount, it’s clear Henry Cavill is smitten with this big black beauty. The actor spent his last day in Hungary (where the show was filmed) out on a trail ride and posted these photos declaring his love for the ebony equine. When certain choices are made in the games, Geralt receives a black steed so who knows, maybe Hector will get some screentime in a later season of The Witcher.

The Witcher Gets What The Witcher Wants

While any of these steeds would’ve done a commendable job, Roach and Geralt share a deeply humorous relationship and the layers of that relationship must show through the screen. What better way than to have Henry Cavill pick out the horse he has formed just such a bond with? The horse that claimed the role of Roach was hand-picked by the Witcher himself, therefore making it the number one mount for the job.
