The original Child’s Play released in 1988 and introduced moviegoers to the character Chucky: a killer doll who is possessed by a serial killer. The film was a hit with horror buffs and quickly launched a franchise that has spawned a total of six sequels and a reboot. While the Child’s Play movie this year had no connection to previous films, Child’s Play creator Don Mancini is still planning to continue the original Chucky storyline in the form of a TV show.
Not a lot is known about the series, except that it will air on Syfy next year and be a continuation of the Cult of Chucky storyline. Horror buffs are eagerly awaiting the return of Chucky, so here are 5 Things We Want To See In The Chucky TV Show (And 5 Things We Don’t).
10 Want To See: A Conclusion To Ronald Tyler’s Storyline
Out of all of the films in the Child’s Play franchise, Child’s Play 3 is often seen as the black sheep of the series. One of the characters in the film that falls victim to Chucky is Ronald Tyler: a cadet at Kent Military School. While Chucky is “killed” in Child’s Play 3, it is never explained what happened to Tyler.
Since the series has already brought back Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany, and Christine Elise as Kyle, it would make sense to bring back a big character from Child’s Play 3. However, it may be hard to track down the actor Jeremy Sylvers since he hasn’t acted since 2001.
9 Don’t Want To See: Heavy Censorship
While continuing the Child’s Play franchise as a TV show may seem like an interesting idea, it could also be a cause for concern. Don Mancini has had a lot of freedom with his Chucky movies, but there is only so much that can be shown on cable television.
If Chucky were to come to a premium network like HBO or Starz, Chucky could be as disgusting as he wanted to be, but there will be certain limitations since Chucky is coming to Syfy. That being said, hopefully Mancini and the crew on the show can find a way to bring Chucky’s dark sense of humor to the small screen without sacrificing characteristics that he is known for.
8 Want To See: A Darker Tiffany
Out of all of the Child’s Play characters besides Chucky, Tiffany is among the most recognizable characters of the series. Prior to Charles Lee Ray becoming a doll, he dated a woman named Tiffany Valentine. After trying to resurrect her boyfriend Tiffany herself becomes a possessed doll. Bride of Chucky was the first film to introduce Tiffany and was also the beginning of the series infusing a lot of comedy with the horror.
While Tiffany has done a lot of twisted things with Chucky, the character herself hasn’t ever been a part of a serious and dark movie. With the more recent Chucky films focusing more on horror again, it’s time to see a darker version of Tiffany as well.
7 Don’t Want To See: An Entire Season Of Nica Chucky
Nica Pierce is a paraplegic character who was first introduced in the film Curse of Chucky. Nica is framed for the murder of her family and is sent to a mental institute at the end of the film. Cult of Chucky continues this storyline, showing Nica facing the truths of her “crimes”. By the end of the film, Chucky has possessed Nica and used her to kill Dr. Foley and escape the hospital.
While Nica is one of the most interesting characters the series has seen in a while, the show needs to resolve her possessed storyline. Seeing Nica act as Chucky for an entire season would get old pretty quick.
6 Want To See: A Kyle, Nica, And Andy Team-Up
While an entire season of Nica Chucky would be excessive, seeing her regain control of her body and team up with Andy and Kyle would be a win. Kyle will likely be a big part of the Chucky TV show since she made a cameo at the end of Cult of Chucky. When Andy leaves his cabin to find Nica, he sends Kyle to his home to continue to torture Chucky’s head.
Kyle and Andy will likely team up in the TV series, but it would be interesting to see them save Nica and team up with her as well. This would also be a good way to tie the older Child’s Play movies together with the newer ones.
5 Don’t Want To See: More Meta Humor
After Child’s Play 3, the series became a lot more comedic. Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky are examples of meta-horror films, which really made the franchise more absurd than it had ever been before. Comedy and horror are two things that aren’t easy to mix and certain Chucky sequels seemed to push it a bit too far.
Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky did a nice job of bringing the series back to its horror roots, while still allowing Chucky to have his dark sense of humor. Hopefully, when Chucky comes to Syfy next year, the series will continue the tone of the last two sequels rather than relying on comedy.
4 Want To See: Jabs At The Reboot
When it was announced that Child’s Play was being rebooted, many longtime fans of the series were off-put by the idea. Since MGM owned the rights to the original, they were able to reboot the series even though Don Mancini hadn’t finished telling his story with Chucky yet. Mancini even rejected a producer credit on the reboot and Brad Dourif didn’t even want to voice Chucky.
The Child’s Play reboot wasn’t panned by critics, but it would be funny to see the TV series make fun of the reboot with a subtle joke here and there. With the resentment Mancini and Dourif seem to have for the reboot, it’s possibly they could take jabs at the movie or just completely ignore its existence all together.
3 Don’t Want To See: The Return Of Glen/Glenda
Seed of Chucky is often credited as the worst film in the Child’s Play franchise. The film introduces Chucky and Tiffany’s son/daughter named Glen/Glenda who is responsible for resurrecting his parents. Glen/Glenda was unlike his parents and didn’t enjoy killing people. By the end of the film, Glen/Glenda had been turned into two human twins.
The storyline of Chucky’s offspring was just too ridiculous and something that really should be left in the past. That being said, the fate of Glen and Glenda was never specifically stated in Seed of Chucky, so it’s possible the characters could make a return in the TV series.
2 Want To See: An End To Child’s Play
Last year, the Child’s Play franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary. After Seed of Chucky, the series stopped getting theatrical releases and instead were sent straight to DVD. Even though Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky got mixed reviews, they were still seen as a return to form for the franchise.
Since the storyline seems to be going over well with fans right now, it may be time to call it quits while they are ahead. There are several horror franchises that just won’t seem to die, but Chucky could be an effective and satisfying end to the series.
1 Don’t Want To See: More Of Chucky’s Backstory
Most fans know the backstory of Chucky. After being shot by the police, Charles Lee Ray had no choice but to transfer his soul into a Good Guys doll to survive his ordeal with the cops. More of Charles Lee Ray is seen in Curse of Chucky when the film tells the story of a woman named Sarah. After being introduced to Sarah, Ray became obsessed with her, killed her husband, and kidnapped her.
The film shows him keeping her chained up in his safe house, only for the cops to start chasing him. The storyline helped connect Curse of Chucky to the previous movies, but we really don’t need to hear any more about Chucky’s backstory at this point.
