Chris Evans is the Punisher in new pieces of Marvel fan-art. A year after he hung up Captain America’s shield, fans are already looking for the actor to return to the world of Marvel regardless of the role he plays next. Case in point is these new illustrations that imagine him as a much more ruthless comic book character than Steve Rogers.

While Evans’ Captain America was running around with the Avengers on the big screen, Marvel TV’s take on the Punisher, on the other hand, was just starting his adventures on Netflix. Played by Jon Bernthal, Frank Castle was introduced in Daredevil season 2 and was given his own TV series shortly after that debuted in 2017. He returned for another season of The Punisher last year, but with Netflix canceling all their Marvel shows in light of the arrival of Disney+, Bernthal’s time playing the role came to an abrupt end. Now, there’s a chance for the character to return with the proper MCU, and should it be recast, two pieces of fan-art suggest Evans for the role.

Courtesy of photographer thefunksolbrother comes a couple of photos imagining what Evans would look like as the Punisher. The artist took the head of a Captain America statue and combined it with the body of the Punisher which resulted in an incredible mashup. Check out a couple of his pieces below:

Admittedly, chances of Evans playing another Marvel character after his brilliant stint as Captain America are very slim to none. While he portrayed Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films from the 2000s before joining the MCU, the actor was coming from less successful movies. The MCU on the other hand became the most popular franchise in the world during his time playing the Super Soldier. Aside from this, it’s safe to say that both Evans and Marvel Studios wouldn’t want to take this route anyway. For what it’s worth, Evans’ retirement from the MCU came from wanting to explore other projects outside of the superhero bubble. Similarly, Marvel Studios don’t want to simply bring back the actor, especially after the emotional send-off they gave his character in Avengers: Endgame.

It’s still unknown if there are any plans for Marvel Studios to use the Punisher in their films or Disney+ series in the foreseeable future. Given the MCU’s current slate, there’s no narrative opening for him, especially given the character’s grittier and darker tone. That doesn’t mean, however, that he will never be incorporated in the larger MCU world. With Mahershala Ali’s Blade coming up, Marvel Studios may be looking to expand their typically family friendly-catalog and add some more adult content. In any case, there’s no urgent need to bring the Punisher into the main universe considering the string of other characters Marvel Studios now have at their disposal.
