Band of Bugs is a cartoony strategy game from the Xbox 360, specifically the Xbox Live Arcade. The game has just been released as part of February 2022’s Xbox Games with Gold service so new players will likely be hopping into this game. Band of Bugs uses an easy-to-understand block-based terrain structure along with its movement grid and positioning. The best way to come out on top is to attack from a higher place or from behind a bug baddie. Likewise, after each turn, you can choose which position your character faces to mitigate incoming damage.

4 The Game Has A Level Editor

For you creative folks out there, Band of Bugs features a pretty extensive and user-friendly level editor. Apart from the single-player campaign and multiplayer skirmishes, you can opt to hop into the level editor to create the strategy levels of your dreams.

The level editor gives you a blank canvas where you can choose a theme, a bunch of items that the game lovingly calls “doodads,” and, of course, the placements of bugs and various units. Plus, you can adjust the terrain to your liking in order to make each level as tactical as you see fit.

3 Your Units Level Up As You Progress

Okay, this might be an obvious point to some, however, it deserves to be mentioned that each and every one of your units level up at certain parts of the game, typically when you move to a new stage or chapter. There really isn’t a traditional experience or leveling system in this game, but it’s still helpful to have your avatars get stronger.

Increased strength, attack power, defensive capabilities, and agility are all great examples of the attributes that level up as you progress through the story. Each character also has its own set of unique weapons and skills that can be utilized during each tactical stage.

2 Capturing An Enemy’s Lair

One of the major gameplay aspects the game teaches you early on is that you need to capture an enemy’s lair. This bug lair is generally on the complete opposite side of the map and you will need to work on navigating your way there successfully.

Capturing an enemy’s lair blocks other bugs from spawning in and is also typically required to complete a stage. In order to capture a lair, you simply need to head to the purple “X” on the map, and then wait a turn to fully take it over. It’s not a complex mechanic but if you miss this, it could mean you are fighting endless swarms of bugs.

1 Keep Track Of The Turn Order

The top-right portion of the screen has a turn order indicator. Like most other strategy games, Band of Bugs’ movement is based on a turn order, in this case, swapping between the enemy bugs’ movement and your characters’ movements. You can see which turn is next by keeping track of the order on the heads-up display.

While this isn’t a major thing to worry about in the early game stages, it becomes much more important in the more challenging stages. As you manage your bug squad, you will need to figure out when and where to move your next unit to.
