Part of the reason why Pokemon GO became a worldwide phenomenon was due to its ability to appeal to all sorts of people, not just hardcore Pokemon fans. However, some of the casual enthusiasts who picked up Pokemon GO have since been converted to hardcore players, including 70 year old Chen San-yuan of Taipei, Taiwan, who is so dedicated to the popular mobile game that he plays it using 15 cell phones at once.
The 15 cell phones are attached to the front of Chen San-yuan’s bike, which he rides through the streets of Taipei when playing the game. Now known affectionately as the Pokemon Grandpa, Chen San-yuan was first introduced to Pokemon GO by his grandson when the game originally launched in the summer of 2016. Initially, he used one phone when playing the game, but then started using three phones after just one month of play. Three phones then eventually became the 15 phones he uses when playing Pokemon GO today.
Chen San-yuan uses 15 cell phones and 15 separate Pokemon GO accounts to help him progress through the game faster and obtain rare Pokemon. Reportedly, he will play the game about six to seven hours per day, and sometimes plays it through the night thanks to custom battery packs that allow him to recharge the phones.
The level of dedication Chen San-yuan has to Pokemon GO isn’t a cheap venture, however. As reported by Reuters, it cost the avid Pokemon GO fan a whopping $4,800 to purchase all of the gear he uses to play the game, plus he spends about $300 every month on its microtransactions.
Pokemon GO lets players can earn its in-game currency by defending gyms, but players can only earn 50 coins per day from this method. Otherwise they have to use real money to get useful items in the game like egg incubators, as well as upgrades to their item bag and Pokemon storage space. Presumably, this is where Chen San-yuan’s $300 per month is going when he purchases the game’s microtransactions.
Despite spending so much on microtransactions, Chen San-yuan’s dedication to Pokemon GO doesn’t seem like it will waver anytime soon, and with the game constantly adding new content, there should be plenty of reasons for him to keep playing.
