Dr. Mario World is going back to its roots, as the original 8-bit version of Dr. Mario is coming to the game for free as a playable character, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Dr. Mario.

Dr. Mario was released for the NES in Japan and North America in 1990, with a PAL release happening a year later. Dr. Mario is a puzzle game in the vein of Tetris, with the main distinction being that the blocks are color-coded and they have to match virus blocks that are already on the screen in order to destroy them. The Dr. Mario series has received more entries over the years on different Nintendo systems, and Dr. Mario was one of the original clones in the Super Smash Bros. series, where he throws pills instead of fireballs.

The most recent Dr. Mario game is Dr. Mario World for smartphones, which is a game centered around microtransactions and gacha mechanics that are tied to unlocking playable doctors and assistants, who offer different bonuses in battle. The most recent addition to the game is a free character, as players can now claim 8-Bit Dr. Mario from now until the end of August. This was announced via a trailer on the official Dr. Mario World Twitter page.

According to the trailer, 8-Bit Dr. Mario can immediately eliminate three special viruses in Stage Mode, and he can prevent opponents from controlling half-capsules for a duration of four seconds in Versus Mode.

It’s no secret that Dr. Mario World has been scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of Super Mario Bros. lore when it comes to making new characters. It’s similar to Mario Kart Tour in this way. We have seen Dr. Goomba Tower, Dr. Dolphin, and even Dr. Baby Wario over the past few months. For once, a character inclusion makes a lot of sense, as 8-Bit Dr. Mario is a throwback to the origins of the series, and the fact that it’s a free gift means that players won’t have to grind in order to unlock him.
