Back To The Future What Happened To The Libyans (Did They Die)

A subplot in the time-traveling classic Back to the Future concerns Doc Brown getting ambushed by Libyan terrorists, but what happened to them later? Back to the Future is one of the most beloved films of all time, and is generally considered pretty inoffensive. One aspect that’s certainly questionable when looked at through today’s societal lens is the inclusion of the Libyans, who look and act in a very stereotypical fashion, and arguably promote an insensitive viewpoint. At the same time though, many things were seen as appropriate in 1985 that aren’t now.

Either way, it doesn’t appear to have been written or portrayed the way it was out of malice, and is probably best left not over-analyzed. However, there remains another question to ask about the Libyans. After Doc thwarts what would’ve been his death at their hands thanks to a note Marty left him in the past and a helpful bulletproof vest, Marty sees the terrorists’ van crash into a photo stand, and that’s the last they’re shown onscreen.

Considering that Marty and Doc have a lengthy conversation after it’s revealed that Doc didn’t get killed this time, and neither seem worried that the Libyans still pose a threat, it would appear that they died in the crash. However, expanded universe materials suggest otherwise.

Back To The Future: What Happened To The Libyans (Did They Die?)

While Back to the Future itself leaves the Libyans’ fate entirely unresolved and up to the audience to determine – aside from the aforementioned context clues – the movie’s official novelization by author George Gipe actually clears things up pretty unequivocally. Movie novelizations were a very common thing in the 1980s, and were often based on earlier versions of the shooting script. In the novelization, it’s revealed that after crashing into the photo stand, the Libyans’ van tipped over, landing on top of the exit door.

Thus, the Libyans were trapped inside, still very much alive. The novel also says that Doc and Marty then leave the mall area, while police sirens can be heard in the background, presumably called due to all the gunfire and vehicular trauma. The police will logically find the Libyans’ overturned van, get them out of it, then arrest them. There is still one more issue for Back to the Future fans to consider, which remains unsolved. If the terrorists are captured, why would they not immediately try and trade information about their associate – Doc Brown – to the authorities for a lesser punishment? At the same time though, they’re terrorists with rocket-propelled grenade launchers and machine guns, so not exactly sympathetic figures.
