A Forgotten Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire Feature Is Perfect for Legends Arceus

The world of Pokémon is about to evolve with the release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a game full of new mechanics and a vast world to explore. For the first time, players will be able to explore a near-open world region, gathering and crafting items and battle roaming Pokémon on the fly. It’s a big and exciting change, but one feature could make things feel even more exciting. Ruby and Sapphire’s Secret Bases are a long-forgotten feature that have only returned in remakes, but they would perfectly into Legends.

Secret Bases were private areas trainers could set up in Ruby and Sapphire using the move Secret Power. There, players could hangout, recover or spend time with their Pokémon. The type of base depended on where it was made; for example, trees would create a forest floor theme, while cave colors varied. There were also different sizes and layouts, giving players the ability to create rooms. These bases could also be decorated and moved at anytime. This feature would fit perfectly with Legends’ theme of exploring with Pokémon and creating bonds.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ latest gameplay trailer has shown off much of the exploration part of the game and just what trainers will be doing in the larger world — as well as the base camp players will be able to setup. It’s a great feature that will allow trainers to take a break, rest up and even craft items on the go. However, it could have been better tied to the world that’s mostly filled by Pokémon rather than humans. Bringing back the Secret Base would provide more of a wild feel that would fit into the ancient world and better combine the Pokémon and human worlds, as it would be the Pokémon creating the space.

With how far technology has come since the Generation III games, there could be far more options than just the woods or a cave in a modern game. Different types of Pokémon could create bases in different areas, like deep sea, underground and more. It could be streamlined, much like how HMs are now just performed by specific Pokémon or more automatically rather than being tied to a specific move. Secret Bases could still be connected to the research team through upgrades, but ultimately still be in the trainer and Pokémon’s hands. It would feel more like the lone exploration it is rather than having research team members checking in.

The Secret Base has been left behind for far too long in the series, as it’s a great feature that could be better implemented in modern titles. While Pokémon Legends: Arceus has its own base camp feature, it seems to be quite basic and doesn’t let trainers work as a team with the very Pokémon they’re studying for the Galaxy Expedition Team. This is the perfect opportunity to bring Secret Bases back in a great way and even step them up with the myriad new features coming to players.
