Pokemon Sword and Shield How To Evolve Amaura Into Aurorus

The Crown Tundra DLC has brought many beloved monsters into Pokemon Sword and Shield, including some of the game’s newer Fossil Pokemon: Amaura and Aururus. Fans of this icy dinosaur may already know its nocturnal secret, but newer players may be finding themselves with an oddly high-leveled, unevolved, dino-friend.

Pokemon Sword and Shield drew early attention for apparently banning a large number of Pokemon from the Galar region. That is to say, the game started off with an alarmingly small pool of Pokemon, given the series’ near thousand original creatures. Thankfully, fans quickly realized that the game’s Expansion Pass would remedy this issue in the months to come.

Isle of Armor brought in favorites like the Kanto Starters, while Crown Tundra promised to introduce new Legendary Pokemon alongside established icons, like Gible and the Fossil Pokemon, Amaura and Tyrunt. Now that the Crown Tundra DLC is available for purchase, players have started exploring its new terrains and completing their Pokedexes with Pokemon like the aforementioned Amaura.

Amaura, fittingly known as the Tundra Pokemon, is a Shield-exclusive Rock/Ice-type Pokemon originally obtained by restoring an in-game fossil. Its counterpart, exclusive to Crown Tundra in Sword, is the powerful Rock-type, Tyrunt, and they both feature distinct evolution methods. Pokemon Trainers who’ve added Amaura to their teams for the first time may find themselves a bit mystified as the Pokemon continues to level up without evolving. This may be especially true for Trainers who favor daytime gaming.

Amaura and Tyrunt feature time-based evolutions, which is to say, one of them evolves at night, and the other during the day. Trainers hoping to evolve their Amaura will have to train it until it reaches Level 38, and then level it up once more, at night. In other words, Amaura evolves at Level 39, minimum, when leveled up at night. As one would imagine, Tyrunt evolves at the same level, but during the daytime.

Amaura’s evolution is the HP-heavy Aurorus, which can learn powerful moves like Mirror Coat, and even the Isle of Armor tutor’s Meteor Beam. It may not be as sassy as the redesigned Jynx, but it does have access to the powerful Aurora Veil originally introduced by Alolan Ninetales; so it offers players an interesting defensive option for their teams.

Thankfully, evolving Amaura is rather straightforward too, despite requiring moonlight. Players will find themselves venturing across The Crown Tundra in pursuit of Shiny Legendary Birds and the like, so there’s already a lot on the plate as it is.

Pokemon Sword and Shield, and the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC Expansion Passes, are available now on Switch.
