Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is easily one of Mario’s best RPG outings. For many, the SNES classic actually edges out Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi series when it comes to the contest for the best Mario RPG. As such, Super Mario RPG deserves a comeback in the form of a remake or reimagining on the Nintendo Switch.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was a late release for the SNES. Developed by Square Enix, the game was an unforeseeable homerun that has only amassed a larger fan following since its release.

It’s easy to see why. The game has fantastic RPG gameplay mechanics, made approachable by the Mario aesthetics, and the tiny bits of platforming featured throughout the game that make it seem like a thorough Mario experienced. When Square Enix was up to the task of making a Mario RPG, the team clearly knew what they were up against and delivered in all the right ways.

And the game is not one that has disappeared like so many classics in years past. The game has since been released on the SNES Classic Edition as well as Nintendo’s digital storefronts. Clearly, the game is among Nintendo’s prized SNES classics.

So time for a remake, right? Although the game has aged well, it could use a good update on the Nintendo Switch with reworked graphics and a reimagined art style. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Nintendo Switch is a great example of this, which updated the Game Boy classic with vibrant graphics reminiscent of figurines. Even just applying the art style of Link’s Awakening to a remake of Super Mario RPG would be a neat update.

Combined with refined mechanics and improved platforming, a remake of the game could make for a serious hit on the Switch.

Moreover, a remake may be more likely than not. According to a rumor from April, a Super Mario RPG remake was going to be announced at a Nintendo Direct this month. However, the Nintendo Direct has since been delayed, so we won’t know of a tentative Super Mario RPG remake for a while if the original rumor is true.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is often overshadowed by the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series due to their continued presence via regular installments. However, the RPG that initiated a whole sub-genre for the Mario series deserves its due, and what due it would be to come in the form of a remake on the Nintendo Switch.
