British in-game leader Alex “ALEX” McMeekin has decided to step down from Team Vitality’s active CS:GO roster, according to a report from 1pv. The 24-year-old reportedly cites personal reasons for leaving the team, particularly the team’s packed travel schedule. The report states that former Envy member Ali “hAdji” Haïnouss will take his place on the roster.
Alex “ALEX” McMeekin signed with Vitality in 2018, replacing Vincent “Happy” Schopenhauer on the active lineup. ALEX’s leadership, coupled with the talents of Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut, pushed the team to win cs_summit 4 and the ECS Season 7 Finals in 2019. They reached the quarter-finals of the StarLadder Berlin Major, suffering an upset elimination at the hands of eventual finalists Avangar. After adding Richard “shox” Papillon to their ranks, Vitality closed out the year with a second place finish at DreamHack Masters Malmö and a win at EPICENTER 2019.
With ALEX at the helm, Vitality reached an all-time high ranking of second in the world behind Team Liquid. They made frequent deep tournament runs, and were widely considered to be one of the best CS:GO teams in the world. Their pace seemed to slow in the beginning of 2020, as they were knocked down to the BLAST Premier Showdown and finished 9-12th in IEM Katowice.
ALEX now looks to be stepping down from the team, leaving them without an in-game leader. The report states this move comes due to personal reasons, and not from conflict within the team.
Vitality is reportedly targeting LDLC’s Ali “hAdji” Haïnouss to fill the vacancy. HAdji has represented a number of well-known French teams, including Team Envy, 3DMAX, and LDLC. Recent results include a 1-6th placing in WePlay! Forge of Masters Season 2 and a second placing in Assembly Winter 2020. While hAdji is the favorite to join the team, the report states Vitality also tried 19-year-old Syman Gaming player Nicolas “Keoz” Dgus. It is still unclear who would take over the in-game leadership responsibilities upon ALEX’s departure.
ALEX’s future plans are currently unknown, and none of these moves have been confirmed. Should a roster change go through, Vitality would debut with their new team member in ESL Pro League Season 11, which is set to begin on March 16th.
