Birds of Prey’s release in theaters has prompted fans to ponder on what other characters from the DC Universe should make an appearance in a sequel.

With Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) already in theaters, it’s the perfect time to discuss the possibilities of a sequel to the DC superhero film. Although the box office for the film isn’t breaking records any time soon, there may just be enough to warrant a follow-up featuring the fan-favorite group of heroes.

The next installment should build upon the foundation and introduce new personalities from the comics that are ripe for the DCEU franchise. So let’s list five characters that need to be in a Birds of Prey sequel and five that don’t.

10 WANT: BARBARA GORDON

Although Barbara Gordon is an obvious choice for a sequel, it doesn’t make it any less true. As a founding member of the team in the comics, Gordon’s presence is imperative to the Birds of Prey team. Her role in the roster has varied throughout the years, including being the heroic Batgirl or the tech-savvy Oracle after her incident with the Joker.

It should suffice to say that fans would be happy to see her in any capacity in a forthcoming installment. If a solo Batgirl film does indeed make it to the big screen, from Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson no less, then her introduction to this world of characters should be seamless and satisfying.

9 DON’T WANT: POISON IVY

Poison Ivy has indeed been a part of the superhero team from time to time in the comics, however, she’s a character that works best when leaning on her villainous attributes. Instead of being featured in a Birds of Prey film, Gotham City Sirens, starring Harley Quinn of course, would be a great way to introducing her to the DCEU.

The idea of a villain being reformed isn’t a bad one, but she, in particular, is a person that doesn’t stray away from her beliefs at the end of the day. The cast of characters in a potential Sirens film simply suits Ivy better when the likes of Harley and Catwoman are surrounding her.

8 WANT: KATANA

Making her big-screen debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Katana is a character that deserves more than just being a small piece of a poorly-received pie. The silent but deadly assassin joined the Birds of Prey team for a period of time during the New 52 in the result of Batgirl’s absence. Although her time with the squad was limited, she made enough of an impact to warrant a spot on this list.

Karen Fukuhara’s time as the hero was extremely limited in the David Ayer film, so it would be nice to see her get another chance to fulfill the role. The highly-skilled fighter is a perfect match for the intense action and pace Birds of Prey brought to the table this year, and it would be a shame if she’s not utilized properly in the DCEU.

7 DON’T WANT: CATWOMAN

Since she is already being introduced in The Batman next year, Catwoman appearing in a future Birds of Prey film would be redundant. Her interactions with the team in the comics has varied over the years, but she is more inclined to lean into her more criminal sensibilities. Her chemistry with the heroes such as Black Canary and Huntress would make for great on-screen moments, however, not as teammates but adversaries.

That being said, similar to Poison Ivy, the character should indeed be featured in a Gotham City Sirens flick, alongside Harley Quinn as well.

6 WANT: LADY BLACKHAWK

As one of the more recent members of the team, Lady Blackhawk isn’t necessarily a staple DC character but still manages to solidify an important spot on the squad. In addition to being a highly-skilled pilot, she continues the tradition of having mostly non-superpowered heroes on the team, always fighting the good fight no matter the odds.

Her back and forth with other heroes is something that causes disruptive but necessary dynamic shifts within the team. The cherry on top, of course, is the fact that she pilots the team’s plane during missions.

5 DON’T WANT: HAWK & DOVE

As one of the few male members of the superhero team, Hawk and Dove have a history with the Birds of Prey that spans years of comics. However, due to the duo’s heavy presence on DC Universe’s Titans TV series, Hank Hall and Dawn Granger don’t need to be spread too thin in live-action media. Don’t get me wrong, they are worthy members of the team in the comics, but there’s no need to add too many members for the films.

Plus, they’re already being portrayed brilliantly by Smallville alum Alan Ritchson, and Minka Kelly, of Friday Night Lights fame.

4 WANT: LADY SHIVA

Lady Shiva is a must-have if they want to dig deeper into her daughter’s storyline in a potential sequel. Although Cassandra Cain was drastically changed for the film, the fact her biological parents were mysteriously absent leaves room for her mother, Shiva, to swoop in. In the comics, she’s portrayed as a cold, calculated assassin that always wants total control of her offspring, who she raised as a trained killer from birth.

They would have to tweak certain things of course, but there’s no doubt her influence in a sequel would make for great turmoil for the superhero team.

3 DON’T WANT: POWER GIRL

In her own right, Power Girl is a classic DC character that serves as a reminder of how the Multiverse allows for alternate versions of beloved heroes. She’s a more mature, level-headed version of Supergirl and carries the same super abilities of the Kryptonians, which is precisely why she should be excluded when it comes to the Birds of Prey. Her powers simply make the other team members almost entirely null when it comes to fighting criminals in Gotham City.

If they want to keep the team with their ears to the ground then avoiding larger-than-life heroes like Power Girl is the way to go. Once again, Karen Starr herself is an interesting character the deserves the limelight at some point, just not in a Birds of Prey sequel.

2 WANT: RED HOOD

Although his interactions with the team in the comics are limited at best, the films have a chance to do something unique with Red Hood. The former Robin has a past with Barbara Gordon and even share similarities, including having a gruesome encounter with the Joker that changes their lives forever. In the DCEU, Harley Quinn canonically had a hand in the said incident, so him becoming an antagonist for the team would be fairly simple to establish.

He can eventually become an ally, but Red Hood should start out as a menace to the city the Birds of Prey are sworn to protect.

1 DON’T WANT: JOKER

With Harley breaking up with Joker in Birds of Prey, there’s no reason to include the Clown Prince of Crime in further installments. His relation to the team starts and ends with Harley Quinn, who seemingly won’t be a part of the squad, so showing up in a sequel would be unnecessary.

Despite being one of DC’s best villains, there is simply not enough story-wise to have him return in any capacity any time soon. Add the fact that Jared Leto’s future as the character is uncertain, Joker is just one character that should be shelved in the DCEU for the time being.
