Robert Pattinson has revealed that Bruce Wayne’s butler and closet confidant, Alfred Pennyworth, believes that Wayne has “gone insane” in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film The Batman. Set to put a new spin on the iconic comic-book hero, the upcoming DC project will see Twilight star Robert Pattinson take on the role of Gotham’s caped crusader. The Batman will see a younger Wayne as he grapples with his second year as the crime-fighting vigilante, as he attempts to take down Paul Dano’s The Riddler, a merciless serial killer whose motivations appear to connect to the Wayne family in some way. Pattinson and Dano appear alongside an incredibly stacked supporting cast that includes the likes of Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis.

Following the success of Serkis’ Venom: Let There Be Carnage earlier this year, the Lord Of The Rings star is now stepping back in front of the camera for Reeves’ The Batman to play Alfred Pennyworth. Fans of The Bat will be familiar with the Wayne estate’s beloved butler who, following the death of Bruce’s parents, becomes the closest thing he has to family. Previously played by both Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons, Alfred’s role in Wayne’s life has taken on many different forms across the various adaptations of the comic-book classic and with The Batman set to draw inspiration from the Year One and The Long Halloween comics, it remains to be seen exactly what role Serkis’ Alfred could play in the overall story.

Now, Pattinson has revealed that Alfred thinks Wayne has “gone insane” in The Batman. Speaking to Empire, Pattinson offered some insight into what his version of the character will look like, sharing that he is “not really a socialite at all” and that he has been “hiding away.” The 35-year old then went on to reveal that the film will potentially see Wayne building his own Bat-gadgets, a job that has previously been fulfilled by his business manager, Lucius Fox. Wayne’s actions ultimately lead Alfred to believe that he has “gone insane.” Check out Pattinson’s full quote below.

“Bruce has been hiding away, he’s not really a socialite at all. He’s building all these little contraptions and things, just with Alfred. And even Alfred thinks he’s gone insane!”

Since it was first revealed that Pattinson would be taking on the mantle of the Dark Knight, Reeves has maintained that The Batman will show an entirely different side of Bruce Wayne. Pattinson’s words certainly act as confirmation that the film is likely to present him in a way that has not been seen before. The official trailer for The Batman has already teased Alfred’s potential concerns for Wayne’s wellbeing as Serkis’ can be seen telling him “If this continues, it won’t be long before you’ve nothing left” as Wayne’s new-found hobby appears to be having a profoundly negative effect on him mentally.

For Alfred’s tolerance of Wayne’s antics to have potentially been rattled, it certainly begs the question of what exactly the film could have in store for this character and just how Pattinson will put his own unique spin on the role. Pattinson’s insight into his new version of Wayne is certainly reminiscent of previous iterations of the eccentric billionaire that audiences will have seen before, particularly Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight Rises, who has hidden himself away following the death of his longtime love, Rachel, as well as having sustained some serious injuries that ultimately have forced him to retire. With The Batman having recently topped IMDB’s list of the most anticipated releases of next year, who knows what the film’s March 2022 release date will bring.
