As Tim Burton’s Batman expands into comics with Batman ’89, the new Robin has been revealed to have something in common with Chris O’Donnell’s version from Batman Forever. Drake Winston seems to share Dick Grayson’s appreciation of bat-themed motorcycles.
Although Marlon Wayans was never able to portray Robin in the films as he was initially casted in Batman Returns, his likeness has been incorporated in the ongoing Batman ’89, written by Sam Hamm with art by Joe Quinones. Recently taking on the Robin persona, Drake is getting his start as Gotham City’s new vigilante. During Batman ’89 #4, he meets with Alfred Pennyworth and Bruce Wayne, in a scene that calls back to Dick’s first time at Wayne Manor in Batman Forever.
As Drake enters the Batcave, he’s in disbelief and immediately gravitates toward the Batcycle. Similarly never seen in Tim Burton’s Batman films, the new Robin shares Chris O’Donnell’s preference of motorcycles. Clearly excited to see it on display, Drake takes a seat and practically presumes ownership as Bruce has yet to take it out while on the job. “Ohhhhhh my goodness!” “She’s new. Needs a couple of tweaks. I haven’t taken her out yet…” O’Donnell’s Robin might not have been appreciated by fans, but his love of motorcycles was a timely addition to his character meant to modernize him in his ‘90s setting. It’s fitting that Drake should have the same amount of interest in taking the Batcycle for a ride.
At the time of Batman Forever’s release, many fans assumed they were a part of the Burtonverse, as they wasn’t much clarification regarding canon. Despite it now being official that O’Donnell’s Robin isn’t the Boy Wonder to Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight, these small details remain. While it’s possible that Joel Schumacher might have retroactively influenced Batman ’89 in brief ways, Drake’s characterization feels authentic to the world that Burton brought to screen. As the scene in the Batcave brings a conclusion to Batman ’89 #4, it’s hinted that Drake Wintson will be the one to officially bring the Batcycle to the city streets, just like Robin in Batman Forever.
As the new dynamic duo of the ‘90s take form, minor twists to the Batman mythos are keeping things fresh. Usually, Robin would take on brighter vehicles themed to his costume. However, the utilization of the Batcycle for an older Boy Wonder speaks to his maturity. Dubbed by the next issue as the “Man Wonder,” Drake Winston is a version from a different era.
