Amazon’s Upcoming MMORPG New World Delayed Until Late August

Amazon Game Studios announced that it has been forced to delay its upcoming MMO New World from May to August due to the global slowdown caused by the ongoing spread of COVID-19. While many developers have successfully adjusted to working remotely and have not seen delays in their work, Amazon has not been able to do the same.

The news is detailed in a developer post, which states that, “We have made the hard decision to delay the release of New World until August 25, 2020 and the start of Closed Beta to July.” As one might expect, creating something as ambitious as an MMO requires care be taken in releasing a quality product, and this has proved challenging while working remotely.

“Like most of you, our entire team has been sequestered as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic,” the post continues, “We want to make sure that we have the time needed to make New World the very best it can be for our players.” While the news is certainly unfortunate, players can bank on playing the best version of the game possible upon release.

New World will launch as player-vs-player-vs-environment survival game with a heavy focus on team cooperation. Players will need to explore, acquire resources, and expand more efficiently than their opponents if they want to emerge victorious.

All of the action will take place on a fictional island called Aeternum in the 17th century, and the trailer above features generations of explorers looking to capture the strange power for themselves, only for them to succumb and become undead protectors against others who seek the power for themselves.

While Amazon has struggled to adapt to the slowdown caused by COVID-19, other game developers are thriving by comparison. In early March, Bungie implemented a near-total work from home policy and have since been able to continue releases content on their original timeline in Destiny 2. Meanwhile, Sony has established a $100 million fund called the Sony Global Relief Fund for COVID-19, which aims to help workers most affected by the pandemic.

Overall, the news of a delay for New World is disappointing, but still we hope that the game does well following its new launch date in August.
