American Horror Story Season 10 Is Emma Roberts Returning

After the release of the cast announcement trailer for the tenth season of American Horror Story, one name in particular was notably absent: Emma Roberts. Will the actress return for the tenth season?

American Horror Story has been a fall staple for horror television fans since 2011, and Ryan Murphy has made some big promises for the tenth season by bringing back an all-star cast of fan-favorites and long-term alumni, including Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, and Finn Wittrock. The show has been renewed through a thirteenth season, so while it’s certainly not the end, any show that makes it to a tenth season is notable, and it seems only natural to assume those involved with the project would want to make it one of the strongest to date. The beauty of an anthology is that every season can be fresh and different, and while the theme for season ten hasn’t been announced as of this writing, some speculate that based on promotional materials, it could be something to do with aquatic horror.

Though fans of Roberts were likely disappointing not to see the actress’ name on the cast announcement, there could be some good reasons why she won’t return if, in fact, she isn’t coming back to lend her talents to the tenth season of American Horror Story.

Why Emma Roberts Isn’t Returning To AHS Season 10

When actors have taken seasons off in the past, it’s usually just that: a break. Last season, 1984, was missing a few of the mainstay cast members, including Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters. The latter two have been involved with American Horror Story in some capacity since the very first season, Murder House. Kathy Bates became a major part of the series’ history in season three, Coven, and has been featured off and on ever since. Roberts also first appeared in season three, and has been off and on both in major and minor roles since. Roberts took a break before during seasons five and six, Hotel and Roanoke respectively, and only had a very small role in season seven, Cult. During this time, she was working with Ryan Murphy as the lead actress on his FOX horror-comedy series, Scream Queens.

While it has not been confirmed either way that Roberts definitively won’t return, it seems unlikely. Currently, Roberts has a few projects in the works, though with COVID-19 delays to filming and studios shutting down temporarily to contain the spread of the virus, it’s unknown what actors’ filming schedules will look in the future. As of this writing, Roberts has five projects in the works either pre-production, post-production, or filming. This could be the reason why she isn’t returning to American Horror Story, if her absence on the cast announcement trailer can be taken as absolute truth.

Ryan Murphy has been known to surprise his audience before, and Roberts could very well play into that, especially if she only had time to lend her talents to a very minor – but no doubt important – role. Most recently, she can be seen in Blumhouse and Universal’s 2020 release, The Hunt.
