Stefani Germanotta, best known under the stage name of Lady Gaga, appeared in two seasons of American Horror Story, but she hasn’t returned since 2016’s Roanoke. The singer-songwriter rose to prominence in 2008 with her first studio album, The Fame. Lady Gaga emerged as one of the most popular celebrities heading into the next decade, and was a major headliner when she was cast in season 5 of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology. Before that, Gaga had a few limited acting opportunities in The Sopranos and Machete Kills.

Based on Gaga’s epic stage performances, it became easy to envision the figure in Murphy’s eccentric horror series. Not only was she added to the cast for season 5’s Hotel, but she was tapped to play the prominent role of Elizabeth Johnson, aka “The Countess.” Her character was the wife of James Patrick March, and the owner of the infamous Hotel Cortez. She was also infected with a blood virus that gave her a chance of immortality, allowing her to oversee the ongoings of the hotel. Though her performance garnered mixed reviews from critics, Gaga won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the ritzy bloodsucker.

Gaga returned the following season, which focused on the lost colony of Roanoke. The installment first followed a TV documentary re-enactment of horrific events that took place at a farmhouse while the second half of the season focused on what happened after the production of the series. This time around, Gaga served as a special guest star, appearing as the re-enactment version of Scáthach, an immortal witch who was the first Supreme. Her time filming the Roanoke role was featured in Gaga: Five Foot Two, a 2017 Netflix documentary movie. In it, Gaga had a bit of a dispute with the American Horror Story producers regarding story direction. The superstar seemed unhappy with creative differences as well as the stress over her other ongoing projects at the time. Although the disagreement wasn’t the confirmed cause of Gaga’s absence in the seasons that followed, it’s very likely she needed a break to focus on other aspects of her career.

The same year that Gaga appeared in Roanoke, she dropped her fifth studio album, Joanne. Following its release, the singer embarked on a world tour that lasted until February 2018. Later that year, Gaga starred alongside Bradley Cooper in the latest remake of A Star Is Born. She played the female lead of Ally Maine, and ended up getting nominated for an Academy Award for her work. Though she didn’t win, her performance for “Shallow” ended up winning the year’s Best Original Song. Following her big acting gig, Gaga went right back to work with her music, creating Chromatica, which dropped in April 2020. Aside from the plans for an upcoming tour, Gaga is set to star in Ridley Scott’s upcoming crime film about Maurizio Gucci.

While Gaga’s busy schedule most likely prevented the star from appearing in American Horror Story’s last three seasons, it’s still possible that she could cameo down the line. The horror series is gearing up for its milestone tenth season. As fans await American Horror Story season 10, they can be satisfied knowing an additional three seasons are on the way as well as a spinoff, American Horror Stories. This gives Gaga plenty of opportunities to return to the series that served as her first major TV acting gig.
