Just in time for Halloween, Among Us is introducing a new role that lets impostors mimic crewmates. This should throw even more chaos into what is already a stressful game. Among Us has already gotten into the spirit of the season with Halloween features including spooky hats and decorated maps, and this is sure to liven things up even more.
Innersloth has been hard at work on the game since its initial launch in 2018. With its explosion in popularity over the past year or so, Among Us continues to capture attention, and it will likely continue to do so as it comes to Playstation and Xbox Gamepass later this year. While some changes, like accessibility features, can seem small, major additions like increasing the lobby size and adding new roles into the game help keep things fresh. Among Us has inspired its fair share of imitators—including the drama with Fortnite’s Impostors Mode, clearly inspired by Among Us—but Innersloth is still working to keep the original game feeling new and exciting.
The company’s latest announcement, on the Innersloth website, concerns a new role known as the shapeshifter. As the name suggests, the Shapeshifter is an Impostor role that can change its appearance to any of the other living crewmembers in the game. The change affects the player’s color, name, and skin choice, so they appear identical to their chosen target for a limited time. However, the change is not instantaneous, and it does leave evidence behind, so sharp-eyed crewmembers may be able to see it happen or otherwise figure out that a Shapeshifter is in their midst. Just when the game was getting easier to play through accessibility features, this new role throws a wrench in things.

Like the other unique roles in Among Us, the Shapeshifter’s inclusion in each game is customizable. Players can choose how many Shapeshifters are allowed per game, as well as the chance of there being any, or they can choose to disable Shapeshifters altogether. Additionally, the length of time Shapeshifting lasts can be altered, as can whether or not the change leaves physical evidence for others to notice. No release date has been announced as of yet, but the announcement did tease some sort of special event coming up that will offer more information. The roadmap trailer Innersloth posted some months back promised quite a few new roles and maps, so the Shapeshifter may be only part of what lies in store.
Among Us has had its struggles maintaining a large player-base, but it still has it adherents, and the addition of new roles like the Shapeshifter will likely help the game keep the players it does have and draw in new ones. With Among Us’ fifth map still on the way, players certainly have more to look forward to in the game’s future.
