The major characters in Attack on Titan live in a bleak landscape consisting of a single gigantic city surrounded by humongous human-eating monsters. As such, it’s not surprising that most people who live on Paradis aren’t welcoming of change, implying that they are less likely to be friendly towards people they don’t know very well.

However, there are a few characters who refuse to compare people with each other, understanding that prejudice is almost always involved in the process. This outlook makes them a lot more receptive to opening up to outsiders. Protagonist Eren Yaeger is obviously not one of the nicer characters, given his penchant for stubbornness and violence, but fans would love to hang out with a few others.

10 Levi Ackermann

Levi doesn’t seem very personable, sadly — his compulsive demands for cleanliness are only eclipsed by his exaggeratedly brutal manner of expressing himself. But these negative aspects about his character disappear when his guard drops, as the Scouts eventually learn.

It might take some time for Levi to accept new friendships, but persistence and loyalty are the best ways to break into his heart, so to speak. Fans have their work cut out for them, but it’s worth the time invested.

9 Frieda Reiss

The unofficial Queen of Paradis and heir to the Founding Titan, Frieda Reiss’ personality is a far cry from her more violent ancestors. Despite acknowledging her complicated role in maintaining Paradis’ security, she has shown herself to be gentle and affectionate, something Historia learns about her big sister very early.

Once Frieda becomes the Founder, her behavior undergoes drastic fluctuations, but she’s likely to befriend basically anyone she meets prior to the event. Her untimely death at Grisha’s hands (in their respective Titan transformations) comes as a rude shock to everyone.

8 Petra Ral

As an integral part of Captain Levi’s Special Operations Squad, Petra takes her job seriously, coldly cutting down Titans without hesitation. At the same time, she has an unbreakable sense of devotion towards her team and Eren, so much so that the latter is inspired by her compassion.

Fans of the show can’t help but adore Petra, more so when she expresses sincere regret for attacking Eren without thinking. Becoming friends with her is relatively easy, as long as fans can prove their loyalty to her vision.

7 Armin Arlert

Armin doesn’t have many friends in the beginning, with two prominent exceptions being Mikasa and Eren. He soon grows into himself, though, transforming into a self-confident young man over the course of just a few years.

Having felt the yoke of oppression around his neck, Armin comprehends the importance of close relationships more than anyone else. Most importantly, he has no set criteria when it comes to choosing his friends: the best word to describe his friendship is “unconditional.”

6 Hange Zoë

The best thing about Hange is not that they are a remarkable genius in everything related to research & development, but that their nature is genuine and bears no hatred for anyone.

In fact, Hange’s initial fear and loathing of Titans vanishes when they start processing the bizarre entities from a scientific perspective. Hange is an incredibly likable character, explaining why they leave an impression on everyone they meet. Everyone in this case obviously includes those Attack on Titan fans who’d love to be their friend.

5 Hannes

Given his penchant for alcohol, Hannes behaves a lot more negligently than someone in his position should, but he can’t really be blamed for not expecting a Titan attack after a century of security.

He more than makes up for his irresponsibility by rescuing Eren and Mikasa from certain death, repeating his heroic act one last time in a later arc. Hannes is rather amicable, perhaps in part due to being perennially intoxicated, but he’s never cold or cruel like many Paradis soldiers. Fans would make friends with him in an instant.

4 Pieck Finger

Pieck Finger is introduced as the villainous Cart Titan in season 3, but her quadruped appearance makes her seem a lot more wild and inhuman than she actually is. In reality, Pieck is an extremely nurturing person despite having to undergo horribly painful experiences with the Marleyan Warriors.

She might be a little too friendly on occasion, like when she plies the underage Colt with liquor just because he asks for it nicely, but there’s no reason to believe that Pieck wouldn’t get along swimmingly with (adult) fans of the series.

3 Conny Springer

Conny is known for his inability to comprehend nuance and is regularly made fun of (but never mocked) for being the least intelligent one in the group. He prefers to spend his time hanging out with others, oblivious to the perilous tasks that lie ahead of him as part of the Scout Regiment.

Although discovering the fate of his family pushes him dangerously close to giving up, Conny doesn’t lose his sense of optimism for a long time and being friends with him means fun, frolic, and constant laughter.

2 Sasha Braus

Sasha, known as Potato Girl to her fans, is quite an outlandish character — her desire to eat is so strong that she often steals meat and assorted food items from the military kitchens.

Her gluttonous tendencies aside, she is a treasured part of the Scouts as well as of the core team, explaining why her untimely death is met with incredible sorrow. Sasha is pleasant and carefree and doesn’t find the task of befriending others difficult in the slightest (at least after she grows out of her initially bigoted mindset).

1 Eren Kruger

Eren Kruger is the first holder of the Attack Titan to be shown in the series, granting his powers to Grisha as a means of atonement for all the horrible crimes he has committed against his own people. While largely apathetic, Kruger’s benevolence is evident, even if buried under layers of sorrow and personal loss.

He claims that there is no such thing as the ideal truth, that everyone sees the same thing from different angles. That’s the best kind of friend, to be honest, as he wouldn’t pass judgment on something he doesn’t understand.
