Calls for a boycott of FIFA 21 have grown louder in recent weeks among some fans who are unhappy with the series’ progression. Although it’s one of the best-selling games in the world, fans of the football franchise question whether it’s worth the money to invest in the latest entry.
Some complain that there are few gameplay changes or upgrades in each new edition, adding that the new games are simply “glorified re-skins” with new kits and updated squads. Fans also note that additions to Career Mode, which allows players to take their team from the bottom of the league to champions as a manager or favorite player, have been uninspiring.
Others compare the cost of the game to Konami’s PES 2021 Season Update, which lists for $24.99 as opposed to $59.99. It should be noted that while promoting PES 2021, Konami explained that the new game is an “updated edition of eFootball PES 2020” and that the price is a special 25th-anniversary offer. In addition, EA Sports has announced that it will offer a free next-generation upgrade to fans who purchase FIFA 21 for PS4 or Xbox One through their Dual Entitlement scheme.
FIFA gamers have also blasted EA for the pay-to-win component of Ultimate Team, where players are rewarded for the amount they spend on in-game purchases of packs. Meanwhile, online FIFA gamers have complained about server issues related to lag time and outages for years.
Still, it remains to be seen if a boycott will actually take place or if it will simply be a social media campaign backed by a few disillusioned fans. Some have suggested recruiting YouTube celebrities who play FIFA and professional esports gamers to the boycott, though most usually have a vested interest in maintaining a good relationship with EA.
Despite the complaints in the past, FIFA 20 was still a best-seller in 2019. Even a lousy Metacritic score, which showed that FIFA 20 had the worst aggregated review rating of the franchise, did little to discourage buyers. For now, we’ll have to wait until October to see how FIFA 21 is ultimately received.
