Out of all the fantastic new features coming in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 free update on November 5, the best might be the new permanent ladder, or “ladder set-up kit,” tool. Additions such as the outdoor storage shed that connects back to players’ home storage and the Roost coffee shop have been on fans’ wishlists since New Horizons was first released. While these will be a huge help in making island life more convenient and relaxing, the unexpected addition of permanent ladders has even more to offer.

The Animal Crossing Direct that aired on October 15 revealed many new items and characters coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including the ladder set-up kit. Throughout the Direct, these permanent ladders were showcased in numerous ways that hint at their versatility. Since they’re tools, they can be crafted. The DIY recipe for the wooden ladder kit can be bought from the display case in Nook’s Cranny for 2,000 Bells once the store has been upgraded. They can also be customized like other craftable tools, and the Direct shows an island with plain, white, and red wooden ladders set up.

These permanent ladders will offer an all-new level of convenience to the way players develop their islands. They’re easy to set up and take down, unlike inclines. Their variety also means they can fit in no matter where they’re placed. With the new Animal Crossing 2.0 update, players no longer have to worry about designing their island’s layout around the limitations of inclines and the inconveniences of regular ladders. There may have been certain arrangements players were averse to trying out because they ran out of inclines to build. Or they wanted to keep their ladder in their home storage instead of having it take up space in their pockets. With the addition of permanent ladders, however, more individualized island formations are now possible. The ladder set-up kits’ versatility will increase the possibilities players have when it comes to their island’s elevation. As a result, players’ options for self-expression will expand greatly.

Permanent Ladders In Animal Crossing Aren’t Actually Permanent

The Direct explains the purpose of the ladder set-up kit is to “permanently place ladders on cliffs,” but their impermanence gives them a leg up from inclines. Once players pay off the Bell fee for an incline with Tom Nook, which can range from anywhere between 98,000 to 228,000 Bells, they’ll have to wait until the next day for the incline to be fully built. If they want to remove the incline for any reason, they’ll have to pay a 10,000 Bell fee and wait another day.

Ladder set-up kits, on the other hand, can be easily placed and removed just like any other furniture item or tool that has been set on the island. Players who are in the process of redesigning their island will get a lot of use out of the “permanent” ladder’s flexibility. It can be used right away and taken down without hassle if the player changes their mind about where they want it to go. They can also place a ladder for easy climbing and descending if they need to go back and forth between elevations while redesigning parts of their islands. The permanent ladder means players can freely climb their island without needing to put away whatever they’re holding to pull out their ladder in New Horizons.

Animal Crossing: There’s No Limit On Permanent Ladders In New Horizons

Although the New Horizons 2.0 update will increase the number of inclines (and bridges) an island can have from eight to ten, there will still be a limit. Big elevated platforms often warrant an incline leading up to it, but the bigger the area, the more access points a player may want for it. The ladder set-up kit can be placed all around a large platform, making it convenient to climb up or go back down from any spot.

Especially big zones may not need multiple inclines anymore with the addition of permanent ladders, however. This is because it would give players the option to move inclines elsewhere. It could even cut down on the number of them on their Animal Crossing island altogether.

Animal Crossing’s Permanent Ladders Don’t Take Up Much Space

An incline takes up a 2-by-4 space, which eats up a lot of room for potential decoration ideas in Animal Crossing. It also means it’s not very practical for players to make small platforms or craters on their island. If they did, they or their friends would need to have a ladder taking up space in their inventory to access every part of the island, which is inconvenient. The ladder set-up kit, however, is much smaller than an incline, only taking up a one-width space on a cliffside. With a permanent ladder set up on the walls, it’s now more feasible for players to experiment with both big and small surface areas of elevation on their island.

Animal Crossing: There’s Potential For A Lot Of Design Variety In ACNH’s New Ladders

There are eight total designs for inclines in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There’s a natural ramp, which is grassy with stones, a log staircase, a stone staircase, and a brick staircase. Players can’t alter the colors of these ramps in any way. There are also two plank ramps, one white and one blue; and two steel staircases, one red and one blue, although these colors can’t be changed at will. Players who want to change the colors of these ramps have to pay the 10,000 Bell fee and wait a day to demolish them, then pay the cost and wait another day to build a new one.

However, wooden ladder set-up kits can be crafted and customized similarly to other tools in New Horizons, namely the net, shovel, fishing rod, and watering can. Not only can the standard versions of these tools be customized into one of eight variations each, but they all have three alternative versions that can be purchased from Nook’s Cranny after it’s been upgraded. These variants also all have eight customization options. Each tool has a “colorful” and “outdoorsy” variation, and an additional version exclusive to each tool: the star net, printed-design shovel, fish fishing rod, and elephant watering can.

It looks like the ladder set-up kit will similarly feature different kinds of climbable structures that can each be customized. Near the end of the 2.0 free update section of the Animal Crossing Direct, a sample island is shown with two metal ladders on a cliff, one red and one blue. The player character then climbs up some ivy on the next cliffside. The ivy is identical to the ones shown earlier in the Direct, when returning NPC Kapp’n takes the player to a “mysterious island.” On the island that contains “mysterious flora,” the player is shown picking up the ivy off the wall. It has a unique bag icon similar to other tools, meaning the ivy is a kind of ladder set-up kit and may also feature customization options.

There may be a fourth kind of ladder set-up kit that wasn’t revealed in the Direct, which would align with the number of special versions each customizable tool has. If each of these permanent ladders has eight variations, that would give players 32 options of ladders to use in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which offers a lot more personalization than the eight different inclines. Players won’t have to worry if an incline doesn’t match their vision for any given area of their island. They can design platforms as they please, and there should be a permanent ladder to match their designing needs.
