The Galar region in Pokémon Sword & Shield follows in the footsteps of the Alola Islands and has a handful of region-specific variant forms of old and familiar Pokémon. Not only do these forms change how the Pokémon look, but they often come with a type change as well. This gives trainers the ability to use some of their favorite Pokémon of the past in new and interesting ways. Let’s now take a look at the 10 best Galarian forms of older Pokémon in Pokémon Sword & Shield and rank them.
10 Corsola
The little coral Pokémon called Corsola is a perfect example of regional variants done right. Not only does it give new life to a more obscure Pokémon, but it also gives a Pokémon with no known evolution one to strive towards. In the Galar region, Corsola trades in the Water/Rock dual-typing for Ghost-typing. It also happens to exchange a cheerful expression for one of loss and suffering. Trainers can also evolve Corsola into its new evolution called Cursola starting at Level 38.
9 Darmanitan
Darmanitan is a unique Pokémon in the sense that it can change physical appearance and typing based on whether or not it’s in Zen Mode. Its normal variant is Fire-type when in standard mode but gains Psychic-typing while in a state of Zen.
For the Galarian version, it is normally Ice-type but gains the dual Fire-typing when in Zen Mode. The Zen Mode also comes with an altered physical appearance. It enters Zen Mode based on its current health and ability while in battle.
8 Zigzagoon
Not only did Zigzagoon receive a new color scheme and slight design change for both it and its evolution called Linoone, but it also obtained a third Pokémon in its evolutionary chain. The Galarian form of Zigzagoon seems to be heavily inspired by its new Gene Simmons-esque third evolution. Normal-type Pokémon tend to be overlooked for more interesting move sets but thankfully for Zigzagoon, the new design also comes with the addition of a Dark/Normal dual-typing.
7 Farfetch’d
At first glance, most people would assume that Farfetch’d look exactly like they do in Kanto, but it turns out the Galar variant is pretty different. On top of sporting a set of much darker brown feathering, the leek it’s holding is much larger and appears to be way heavier. Outside of appearance, the biggest change for Farfetch’d is in its typing, as the Kanto native changes from a dual-typing of Normal and Flying in favor of simply a Fighting-type for the Galarian form. It’s about time Farfetch’d received some love and attention.
6 Mr. Mime
Most people who get their first glance at Mr. Mime would be terrified of the human-like creature who looks like a clown mixed with a bag of dodgeballs. It turns out that there is a version of Mr. Mime that is even more off-putting than the Kanto version fans often saw spending way too much time with Ash Ketchum’s mom. The Galarian form trades a dual-typing of Fairy and Psychic for one of Ice and Psychic and the pinks of its design are replaced with lighter shades of blue. It also gets a Sherlock-inspired evolution called Mr. Rime.
5 Darumaka
When it comes to the Galar region, it happens to be home to much older Pokémon, with some being beloved favorites and others being mischievous little things. Darumaka is a little ball-shaped Fire-type creature that first made its debut back during the 5th generation of games. In the Galar region, you can find a special version of this little guy that happens to be Ice-type. Though the Fire-type version doesn’t evolve until Level 35, the Galarian form of Darmanitan can be obtained when Darumaka is exposed to an ice stone.
4 Meowth
Meowth has a case as the Pokémon that received the most love in the 8th generation of games. Alongside receiving a Gigantamax form for the Kanto version of Meowth, it also obtained a Galar form that made the Normal-type Pokémon a Steel-type. On top of this, it also received a Galar form-specific evolution called Perrserker. You may be asking yourself how and why Meowth received all of this when it just got an Alola form in the 7th generation of games, and the world has no answers for you.
3 Rapidash
Rapidash’s Galarian form isn’t as impressive or cute as Ponyta’s, its base form. That being said, the idea to turn a beloved Kanto-region Pokémon into a fabulous unicorn was a stroke of genius. By simply turning the flames into pastel waves of cotton candy-looking hair and adding a unicorn horn, they gave an old favorite a new life. With the popularity of My Little Pony at its highest point since the ’80s, there’s no surprise that this evolutionary line quickly became a favorite of those exploring the Galar region.
2 Weezing
One of the first things fans learned about the Galar region was that it was heavily inspired by both England and the United Kingdom when it came to culture, architectural, and geographical design. Little did fans know that English stereotypes and generalizations would inspire new Galarian forms of older Pokémon. Weezing’s form in Galar not only adds the Fairy-typing alongside its Poison one, but it gives the two smog-covered heads a pair of extremely elongated top hats that make them gentlemanly.
1 Ponyta
Ponyta is often considered one of the more beloved creatures from the first generation of games, so the moment a new form was revealed, trainers across the world lost their collective minds. Galarian Ponyta takes the simple design of a horse with flames for hair and makes it a My Little Pony unicorn that will likely be merchandising gold considering it’s uncontrollably adorable. The typing for Ponyta changes as well, as it goes from controlling Fire to being able to affect the mind as a Psychic-type Pokémon.
