In a first for the Animal Crossing franchise, New Horizons includes a rough beginning and end point around which the game’s eternal loop is built. Whereas in past entries, nearly every unlock relied upon accumulating Bells or repeating certain tasks, progression in New Horizons is gated behind daily progression on top of the usual requirements for new milestones. That said, even after the game’s credits have rolled, a few goalposts remain to guide players for whom simply building up their island is not a sufficient motivating factor. Among these is appealing to the Happy Home Academy.
What is the Happy Home Academy?
Since the original Animal Crossing for the GameCube, each game in the series has included an organization that evaluates players’ homes. In the first few AC games this organization was called the Happy Room Academy. Players’ HRA ratings were determined by their home meeting certain criteria, from which an overall rating would be determined. With a high enough rating, the HRA would mail an exclusive gift corresponding to the threshold reached.
In New Leaf, the HRA was renamed the Happy Home Academy, and was staffed by Lyle the river otter, who worked as an insurance agent in previous series entries before transitioning into his home evaluator role in City Folk. While the function of the HHA remained largely similar to the HRA from games past, players could now speak to Lyle in their village in order to check their home’s rating. A new assessment would be determined each morning at 6:00 a.m.
In New Horizons, the HHA returned to something closer to its HRA roots. While he could still theoretically remain involved, Lyle is no longer the face of the organization or present in the game whatsoever. Now, in the manner as the original HRA, New Horizons’ Happy Home Academy will mail players their total point value every Sunday morning at 5 a.m.
How to Raise Your HHA Rating
While your HHA rating can’t be viewed in-game other than via the Sunday morning letters, following and improving upon some general guidelines will help ensure a higher rating come next Sunday.
Necessities: There are four essential items by the HHA’s standards: chairs, tables, dressers and beds. The first thing you should do when attempting to secure a high HHA rating is ensure your home contains at least one of each of these.
Use Similar Furniture Items: One easy way to appeal to the HHA is to include items of the same set within your home. This could mean building DIY recipes with shared keywords, such as Cherry or Ironwood items, or matching seasonal furniture like some of the many Bunny Day pieces or items made from the cherry blossom recipes obtained during early April. In addition to items sharing sets, furniture of the same color will similarly appeal to the HHA’s sensibilities. As a general rule of thumb, matching furniture is the way to go; if it happens to be from the same set, even better.
Elevation: An item on a table or wall will always earn more points than one left alone on the floor. Making use of large tables or the real estate on top of dressers is an easy way to get items off of the ground and up to where they will stand out to the HHA. While wall hangings can’t be placed anywhere other than off of the ground, a home with wall decorations will receive significantly more points than one without any.
Feng Shui: The Happy Home Academy happens to be concerned with good feng shui, which makes use of a couple of key principles. First, furniture must flow a certain way. The easiest way to improve feng shui is to make sure the part of a couch you sit on, for example, isn’t facing the wall. Essentially, items should be usable. There are also color guidelines for feng shui, which in short, require yellow items to the left, red items to the right, and green items in the front of a room. Additionally, items are scored individually, so due to simple math, a higher number of items is almost always going to result in a higher score than fewer large items.
HHA Rewards
Just like in previous games, the HHA will reward players for each home rating milestone reached. The rewards are as follows:
- 10,000 Points: HHA Pennant
- 20,000 Points: Bronze HHA Plaque
- 30,000 Points: Silver HHA Plaque
- 50,000 Points: Gold HHA Plaque
- 70,000 Points: Bronze HHA Trophy
- 100,000 Points: Silver HHA Trophy
- 150,000 Points: Gold HHA Trophy
If you’re hoping to reach your home’s next milestone, return to the general guidelines for increasing your HHA rank and see where you can improve. The HHA can tend to be a bit narcissistic, so if you’re having trouble increasing your rating, throw up your HHA Pennant or Bronze HHA Trophy for some easy bonus points. Soon you’ll be showing off your Gold Trophy to all of your friends who put their red items on the left side of the room. Weirdos.
