Most of the merchants who venture to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are genuine folks just trying to make a living. Poor Mabel hustles even out in the rain with her cart under an umbrella, longing for the day she can have the means to open a brick and mortar shop in your village.

But like in every fruit bunch, there’s always a slightly more bruised apple. In this case, the spotty fruit comes in the form of none other than Redd, also known as Jolly Redd and Crazy Redd. Veteran Animal Crossing fans know him as the sleazy art seller from past games whose merchandise was questionable at times. With the recent update, the village museum gets the addition of an art gallery. The bad news? You can only get paintings via the fox himself, so contact with him is unfortunately inevitable.

Remember Redd Is Nice To Bells, Not You

When you first initiate contact with him on the island, he’ll attempt to sell you a painting for a ridiculous marked up price. Don’t you dare fall for it, as he may seem intimidating, but like a good salesman, he’ll do anything for a profit. Haggle with him a little and he’ll sell you the piece for a much more fair 4980 bells. Interestingly, while there’s no doubt he’s as far from wholesome or honest as you can get, Redd is somewhat misunderstood because of his profession. At his core, he’s just a salesman doing his job.

Because let’s be real, the people who work in shops where profits are driven by commissions aren’t chatting you up to be nice. They’re there to get you to buy something. Is that really any different from what he does?

There’s No Real Rotation Of When He Arrives

The interaction is the easy part. The more challenging step is actually getting him to show up on your island. Some players have reported difficulty with this even with the update. Regardless of whether Redd is already skulking about the village or not, the first thing you should do is go see Blathers. He’ll tell you about the addition of the art gallery in the museum. As you probably know, Blathers is very picky about what donations he accepts, so keep in mind that any future paintings will have to be appraised like fossils first before he’ll consider them for contribution. In other words, don’t get the idea you can sneak the fox’s fake art past him.

After this, if Redd has not shown up, try to be patient, as he tends to operate on a random schedule like many of the land’s traveling merchants. Once you buy your first piece from him, donate it, and the museum will shut down for a day for renovations. Once it reopens, head up to the second floor where you’ll find the entrance to the new wing right away.

Choose Your Purchases Carefully

There are a couple of methods to try to know in advance if Redd is on the island that day. Ever notice how in conversation your villagers seem to comment on activities or tasks you recently did? This is where their nosy behavior comes in handy, as some will mention an interesting character seen walking around. Sometimes Isabelle will comment on it in the daily announcements, but not always. You can look at your map to see if his boat is anchored at the back of the island on that small cove, but this is only for after his first visit. For now, you’ll have to look on your own for where he is, and after buying the painting you’ll be able to look at the wares on the ship.

Inside is exactly how you picture it from the outside, with creepy dim lighting and all. Ironically, most of his prices are fairly reasonable, and all of the items are exclusive to the shop. He allows you to look close at each one so you can try to see if something is counterfeit or not, but be careful because you can only buy one item per day from there.

Avoid Counterfeit Products At All Costs

If you’re not in the mood to buy art, he also sells some unique pieces of furniture inside his shop you can use to furnish your home. Or, instead of donating it, you can definitely hang up paintings or statues in your home. Note that even if you’re just getting it for this reason, buying something that you know to be counterfeit is strongly not recommended.

This is because Timmy and Tommy do not buy fake merchandise, so let’s say you decide to redecorate your home one day and that piece you bought doesn’t go with your new style. If you want to make some bells off it to use toward that renovation project, you’ll run into an issue if it’s counterfeit. The only thing you can really do with it is hang it up in your home as you would regular art. You can try to pawn it off to your neighbors, but don’t put it past them to decline bootleg treasures either.

Redd may be peculiar, but you’ll need him in order to continue your island’s philanthropic mission. Just know what signs to look for, and all will be well!
