Batman and Catwoman have a pretty close relationship, but according to a recent interview, DC is careful not to let them get too close.

The animated Harley Quinn series has been a massive success for HBO Max. The irreverent comedy follows Harley and fellow super villains Poison Ivy, Clay Face, and Doctor Psycho in their exploits across Gotham City. The content of the series is decidedly R-rated and often includes gore, strong language, and sexually suggestive scenarios. While it may seem like anything goes on the streaming series, it turns out that isn’t exactly the case.

In a recent interview with Variety, Justin Halpern, one of the show’s co-creators, explains a plot point for the upcoming Season 3 that DC told them they weren’t allowed to do. According to Halpern, the creators had planned a scene that depicted Batman performing oral on Catwoman. When DC found out about it, they immediately rejected the scene.

“And DC was like ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely can not do that,'” Halpern says. “They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.’”

There have been plenty of sexual scenarios in Harley Quinn. One memorable scene takes place in the second episode when, upon returning to Poison Ivy’s apartment, Kiteman gives Pamela the Naked Man.

Many famous heroes and anti-heroes play a supporting role on the show. Batman, played by Office Space’s Diedrich Bader, is often outsmarted by Harley and her crew on the show. Catwoman also made an appearance in the Season 2 episode Bachelorette, when Harley takes Ivy to Themyscira for her Bachelorette party.

Batman and Catwoman’s relationship was a major focus throughout Tom King’s recent run on the Batman comic series. The couple’s high profile wedding was eventually canceled, but Bruce and Selina unofficially tied the knot just before the events of Joker War. Recently, they decided to take a one-year break while Batman reestablishes himself in Gotham without the Wayne fortune.

DC may think it’s hard to sell toys after seeing Batman go down on Catwoman, but if you ask me, it would boost sales through the roof.
