Anthem seems to be slipping away from EA’s E3 festivities.

Things continue to go from bad to worse for Anthem. Despite having been confirmed to be present at this year’s E3, it seems that the game’s playerbase has shrunk so much that EA doesn’t even think it warrants a spot in their EA Play press conference.

A recent tweet revealed the full lineup for EA Play, scheduled to begin June 8 at 9:15 AM, and conspicuously absent is any mention of Anthem. Battlefield V is there, presumably to advertise its recently released Firestorm update, as well as the current Battle Royale poster child, Apex Legends. But the wayward looter-shooter Anthem didn’t even make the cut.

And it’s not hard to see why. Anthem’s playerbase has eroded that the game’s highest difficulty missions–designed with a full squad of four in mine–are no longer possible as the matchmaker isn’t able to fill an entire squad. Anthem is now no longer on Microsoft’s list of top 50 games being played on Xbox, and Twitch viewership numbers recently dipped into the double digits.

Recent rumors even point to Anthem going free-to-play just so EA could recoup some of its development costs.

BioWare is set to deliver its patch 1.2 update which brings a test-server for PC players featuring the beginning stages of the long-delayed Cataclysm update, originally scheduled for earlier in May. A livestream will also broadcast to update players on the future of the game. Cataclysm was advertised as bringing much of what players had been asking for since Anthem’s release: more end-game content, player guilds, and new missions that build on the flimsy plot.

We’ll find out more about what Cataclysm actually brings to the table later today. One can only imagine if this update were to be a showstopper then EA would have included it in their E3 presentation.

For now, the future of Anthem looks as bleak as ever. Here’s hoping that BioWare pulls a magic rabbit out of their hat.
