One of the video games that were being developed by Amazon Game Studios has officially been cancelled, as the character based fantasy/sports game known as Breakaway is no longer in active development.

The developers of Breakaway made the announcement of its cancellation on Reddit. This comes after a promised overhaul of the game that was going to focus more on the battling and fantasy elements, rather than the competitive sports angle.

We have seen a lot of footage of Breakaway in the past, with the game seemingly near to completion. At a glance, Breakaway could charitably be referred to as an attempt to combine the intriguing character designs of Overwatch with the fantasy soccer elements of Rocket League. Breakaway involved two teams of characters who were trying to move a magical relic into the opposing team’s goal, in order to score points. The characters all seemed to be based on real-life historical and mythological figures.

One of the big selling points of Breakaway was its built-in Twitch support, which is a service that is also owned by Amazon. The increased compatibility of video games with streaming services has made this feature a lot less special, as even Nintendo has finally caved and started adding streaming support for their latest console.

Amazon announced their entry into the world of video game development in 2014 when they purchased Double Helix Games, who were best known for Silent Hill: Homecoming and the new version of Killer Instinct. This led to the creation of three different development studios, which have mostly produced mobile games since their creation.

Amazon Game Studios announced three games at Twitchcon 2016, which were Breakaway, Crucible, and New World. It was at this event that most of the available footage for Breakaway became available. This includes a ten-minute long Breakaway match, which shows off a lot of the game’s features, as well its character roster.

There has been no word on whether the other games announced alongside Breakaway have been cancelled or not. We don’t much about Crucible or New World, but the abrupt cancellation of Breakaway doesn’t suggest a bright future for Amazon Game Studios.
