Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is officially an Oscar winning movie. With Spider-Man as popular as ever, Sony decided to give audiences more of the character, but with a twist. Instead of keeping Peter Parker at the focus, they moved Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) to the front of the story, but also moved the story to animation.
The movie has been praised nearly universally for its ability to push the boundaries of animation and the added story, heart, characters, and soundtrack led many to claim it was the best animated movie of the year. The praise for Spider-Verse didn’t stop there though, as it has even become part of the best superhero movie conversation. Amid all of this praise from audiences, the movie continued to gain steam as it continued to rack up wins, such as with the Golden Globes.

Sony can now count Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as an Oscar winner as it has officially won the Best Animated Feature award. Spider-Verse’s win comes on the backs of Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti , and Rodney Rothman’s direction, and the creative input by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The film was chosen over Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Even though Spider-Verse was widely viewed as the front runner in this category, it is great to finally see it win the award. The Oscar win is just the latest accomplishment for the highly successful animated film, too. Along with the Oscar and Golden Globe victory, Spider-Verse also won the same award at the BAFTAs and the Annie Awards, the latter of which is specifically focused on animation films. In addition to the awards, Spider-Verse has also made over $350 million worldwide and has given Sony the confidence to move forward and continue expanding this universe, although hitting this same level of success may be difficult.
As for that future, Sony is already planning to make a sequel to Spider-Verse. This is likely to be the next installment of the franchise and will continue to tell Miles’ story now that he is firmly established as his reality’s version of Spider-Man. After the sequel arrives, Sony is also developing an all-female team up movie that will star Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and other Marvel heroines, such as Spider Woman and Silk. Thanks to the great start the franchise has received from Spider-Verse, the future should continue to be bright for the animated universe. Plus, with the movie arriving on home video in the near future, fans of the franchise will continue to be able to enjoy the movie on endless rewatches.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is available on digital February 25th and DVD/Blu-Ray/4K on March 19th.
