Owners of Apple’s 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro laptops should take note that a class-action lawsuit has been filed against the tech giant. The problem that drove claimants to take action was an internal weakness that results in partial dimming of the backlight in the display. This isn’t the first component in Apple’s most expensive laptop to fail early or become the focus of a legal challenge.
The MacBook Pro is Apple’s premier laptop, indicating with the name that the device is of sufficient quality and power to be used professionally. Many media industry pros work with a MacBook Pro and Apple is known to appeal to photographers and videographers in particular. These visual art experts require top quality screen integrity, both in color and brightness, to do their work. That’s why a display issue is a serious concern.
Spotted by AppleInsider, the class-action lawsuit claims that Apple was aware of the issue with the ribbon cable in the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro laptops. This is an important distinction as an error is forgivable, but a known flaw is deceptive and subject to greater punishment. Somewhat damning is that the same problem occurs on the 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro laptops and Apple has a free repair program for this model. Unfortunately, Apple did not offer the same free repairs for the 15-inch MacBook Pro, or the 2017 MacBook Pro of either size.
What Does The Problem Look Like?
A demonstration of the problem can be seen in the video below. It appears near the bottom of the screen, a series of alternating light and dark patches that are reminiscent of the uplighting that is seen on a stage or on buildings at night. Eventually, the screen may stop working entirely. The repair requires replacing the ribbon cable that connects the display to the main board in the keyboard section of the laptop. Apple currently charges for the repair and owners worry that this will be a recurring flaw that will require ongoing maintenance.
Apple has faced various problems with the MacBook Pro. Last year, another class-action suit was filed regarding flaws with the butterfly keyboard. This suit is going to trial and also states that Apple was aware of the problem, but proceeded to sell the laptops knowing the keyboards would fail early. Apple has an overall excellent reputation among fans, but these repeated challenges will certainly hurt consumer confidence. The lawsuit about the display backlight adds further reason to doubt the quality and longevity of Apple laptops.
