Apple Watch Series 5 Vs Series 3 Best watchOS Smartwatch To Buy

The Apple Watch is a fantastic wearable that covers fitness tracking, health monitoring and more. Shoppers ready to buy, or those considering an upgrade, will want to know whether the Series 5 model offers enough new tech over the older Series 3 to be worth the extra cost?

From the first Apple Watch, there’s been incremental changes from one model to the next. With Watch Series 5, several major enhancements were revealed, renewing interest and challenging the always-on screen that competing smartwatches had managed before Apple. The Apple Watch has dominated the smartwatch market since its first year and the only real challenge has been from lower cost fitness trackers. However, Watch Series 3 is still available and has a fairly low starting price of $299. In comparison, the Series 5 begins at $499.

With a cost $200 above that of the Apple Watch Series 3, do the improvements in Series 5 justify the price? The most apparent change is the screen as an always-on display was at the top of most owners’ wishlists. Also it is noticeably bigger and nearly fills the entire face. Apple says it is 30-percent larger, achieved by increasing the body diameter a tiny amount while slimming the bezels down dramatically. The newer Apple Watch is available in stainless steel, ceramic and titanium, among the strongest materials known. Aluminum is also an option which is the only choice for Series 3 currently. The Series 5 offers a total of five color choices, depending on which material is chosen. Colors exclusive to the Series 5 via Apple, include black, white and gold. Strangely, the luxury watch color, gold, is only a choice on the aluminum finish. Silver and gray are still an option.

Improved Health Features & Other Upgrades

In addition to the usual heart rate and rhythm alerts, the newer Watch includes an electrical heart sensor along with the standard optical sensor. The former can actually create an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. Some medical doctors have been unimpressed by this feature, though it makes the news from time to time with headlines on how an Apple Watch saved a life. Apple notes that the readings do not apply for those under the age of 22. Rounding out the health-related improvements, the Series 5 Apple Watch has fall detection and expands emergency calling internationally.

There are several other upgrades in the latest Apple Watch. These include a compass, Bluetooth moving to version 5.0, improving connection stability, and a 50-percent louder speaker. To sum up, Apple Watch Series 5 is a significant upgrade over Series 3. For the display improvement and ECG alone, it may be worth the added cost. For shoppers whose budget allows, the additional $200 will provide enough enhancements to make it worth the expense. For those new to Apple Watch and hesitant to invest that heavily, the Series 3 model is still a solid choice.
