Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a colorful, fantastical, Asian-inspired setting that is home to many exotic animals such as sabertooth-mooses, lion-turtles, flying lemurs, and more. Characters such as Avatar Aang and his successor, Avatar Korra, can easily make friends with animals, with Apa the flying bison and Naga the polar bear-dog being good examples.

All this means that if Avatar Aang found himself in the Pokémon universe, he would feel right at home and start making friends with all kinds of native Pokémon in the Kanto region. Aang’s choice in Pokémon would reflect his own personality, worldview, and combat style, meaning some Pokémon will become his best friends while others are best left in the wild.

10 AANG WOULD WANT: Pigeot, The Winged Master Of Wind

Aang is a natural Airbender, and he has always been comfortable soaring in the skies on his glider or with his bison friend, Apa. In fact, Aang invented a few new airbending moves, such as the air scooter. So, he’ll want a few flying Pokémon on his team.

Pigeot is a fine start, one of many bird Pokémon found in this franchise. In Generation I, no non-legendary Pokémon dominates the skies more than Pigeot, a fully-evolved flying Pokémon that can blast foes away with gales and hurricanes. Aang would be impressed.

9 AANG WOULDN’T WANT: Magmar, A Vicious Fire Pokémon

Avatar 5 Kanto Pokémon Aang Would Want On His Team (& 5 Hed Pass Up)

Aang has an uneasy relationship with fire since he was the #1 target of the Fire Nation for an entire year, and Prince Zuko and Princess Azula both used fire against him. That, and Aang once burned Katara by accident while training with Jeong Jeong. So, he won’t be too keen on Fire-type Pokémon as a rule.

Magmar, for example, is not a Pokémon Aang would want to keep around, either as a friend or as a fighter. This humanoid Pokémon is vicious and vengeful, and it’s the living embodiment of flames and lava. Aang would get terrible vibes from this literal monster.

8 AANG WOULD WANT: Lapras, A Gentle Transport Pokémon

One of the gentlest Water-type Pokémon, Lapras stands out in Generation I as a defensive, ice-based Pokémon that is actually more useful for non-combat purposes. Lapras is popular for ferrying people across bodies of water all over the Kanto region, and it has a kind personality to match.

Lapras thus endears itself to gentle Pokémon trainers like Aang, and Aang would love to capture one and make friends with it. He would have a blast sailing across the Kanto seas on a Lapras, just to get away from it all.

7 AANG WOULDN’T WANT: Hitmonchan, A Punchy Warrior

Avatar 5 Kanto Pokémon Aang Would Want On His Team (& 5 Hed Pass Up)

Aang would respect this humanoid Pokémon’s sense of honor and sportsmanship, but on the whole, he’d rather not have a dedicated fighter in his squad. In fact, Hitmonchan has red boxing gloves for hands, marking it as a lifelong scrapper.

This isn’t something Aang would want on his team, though if an ally used a Hitmonchan during a team battle, Aang would find creative ways to protect the Hitmonchan, perhaps with smokescreens or sandscreens. Hitmonchan deserves a fighting chance.

6 AANG WOULD WANT: Butterfree, A Benevolent Bug Pokémon

Butterfree has an undeniable aesthetic to it, despite being a Bug-type Pokémon. Arguably, Butterfree is the most beautiful and elegant Pokémon of Generation I, and Aang would love to have one in his six-member team.

Butterfree can take to the skies like Pigeot, and being a Bug Pokémon, Butterfree can use techniques to disable the opponent with sleep or paralysis-inducing pollen, a bloodless way to end any fight. That appeals to Aang’s pacifistic nature.

5 AANG WOULDN’T WANT: Magneton, The Floating Lightning Monster

Avatar 5 Kanto Pokémon Aang Would Want On His Team (& 5 Hed Pass Up)

This is one of the few robotic Pokémon of Generation I, with it and Magnemite being forebears of Beldum, Metang, and Metagross. Magneton is made up of three Magnemites, a genderless and mechanical creature that can dish out serious damage with electric attacks.

Magneton is an impressive Pokémon, but its non-cuddly appearance would be a turn-off to Aang, and worse yet, Magneton’s ferocious electric attacks would remind Aang of Princess Azula and her lightning which very nearly ended the Avatar cycle forever. That’s a “no” for Magneton.

4 AANG WOULD WANT: Lickitung, A Licking Pokémon

The Pokémon known as Lickitung is an on-the-nose and tongue-in-cheek design. Its name and its appearance are clearly focused on this Pokémon’s long tongue, and sure enough, Lickitung’s best techniques are based on licking its opponent. To Lickitung, everything is a lollipop.

Lickitung is a fairly cuddly creature that can disable the opponent with paralysis-inducing licks, thanks to its copious saliva. Just like Butterfree, Lickitung appeals to Aang’s pacifistic nature, though in extreme cases, Lickitung can use melee combat moves to finish the job.

3 AANG WOULDN’T WANT: Weezing, A Poison Gas Pokémon

Avatar 5 Kanto Pokémon Aang Would Want On His Team (& 5 Hed Pass Up)

Aang doesn’t mind using sleep and paralysis powder from Butterfree to take down an opponent bloodlessly, but Weezing is a different matter. This Poison-type Pokémon has a rather unsavory appearance, complete with a skull and crossbones. Not very appealing.

Not to mention, Aang already has Butterfree. Plus, Aang wouldn’t like how Weezing (and Koffing) emphasize the more gruesome aspect of poison attacks. Whatever Weezing can do, Butterfree can do better.

2 AANG WOULD WANT: Flareon, As A Tribute To Zuko

Avatar 5 Kanto Pokémon Aang Would Want On His Team (& 5 Hed Pass Up)

Aang isn’t too keen on the idea of Fire-type Pokémon, but he ought to have at least one for variety’s sake, and he needs to build a better relationship with that element. Late in the series, Aang and his new friend Zuko learned true firebending from the last two dragons, and at last, Aang is comfortable with fire.

Magmar is mean and vicious, but not Flareon, the fire evolution of Eevee. Flareon is light and quick on its feet like most Eeveelutions, and it’s still cuddy and lovable, despite its element. Aang could get used to this.

1 AANG WOULDN’T WANT: Golem, The Living Rock Ball

Aang really struggled to learn earthbending since the firm and stubborn earth is the total opposite of the carefree and flexible air element. Toph Beifong had to get creative to teach this element to Aang, and Aang would much rather bend air or water than earth if he can help it.

Aang can appreciate the use of Rock and Ground-type Pokémon, but he’d rather not have one on the team, especially a lumbering juggernaut like Golem. Golem can also self-destruct to badly damage the opponent, which isn’t how Aang fights.
